^^ I agree about OST being ho-hum. I was bored during several parts of it. I don't agree with it being too complex and confusing as to the plot, though. On the contrary, I found the OST plot rather too simple.

A lot of people seem to dislike the first and third movies because the plots were "overly complex and confusing". I never really understood that. They didn't confuse me. They are complex, though, but I never saw how that was a bad thing. I've always preferred movies and books with long, complex plots. That's one of the main reasons why I always liked LOTR too.

There seems to be a second wave a of a lot of people seeing OST, cuz I saw it recently as well

Highlights:

Spoiler
-the score. the same tune is overplayed everytime Jack does an epic stunt, but somehow it's still cool every time
-the fountain of youth (and intro)
-the missionary and the mermaid they were so cute together
-Jack asking if he's threatened the king before... callback to CBP! :D
-mermaid fight was pretty cool... definately not the like the little mermaid ;))

Not so much of a highlight:

Spoiler
-Barbossa's look, it wasn't even his skin that bothered me, but was his beard and hair always that grossly scraggled?
-Until they actually set sail, the movie moved kinda slowly
-Philip and Serena not having enough time
-The fact that Jack and Angellica act like they have an uber huge past but we don't know much about it
-The voodoo doll annoyed me for the same reasons that everyone else has been talking about
-the king (don't remember which one.... of england) really cheesy

But after all that, I really need to second this:

I was very pleased with Philip because oh my gosh he's a missionary and they don't make him look stupid ... Actually they make him look extremely awesome and selfless and protecting.

Exactly. It's really awful, but I think

Spoiler
I'm having a movie crush Well, some people have book crushes. Is this so much worse?
*Goes off and hides*

I think a lot of girls (including myself ;;) ) are on the same boat... Funny/random story about him when we were watching the movie:

Spoiler
When he first came on screen I heard my friend whisper to herself "he's so cute! they can't kill him off now!" and then when he gets hurt/appears as he has died to get Serena's tear she just went "i hate this movie." ;))

I agree with that too. I wasn't intrigued by the plot...it just kind of flew by and was rather whatever. I do agree, it was simple and I think it was leaning too much on the success of its predecessor films.

Agreed with pretty much everything you said. I have to admit, Jack had some pretty catchy lines. :)

Oh, I know that feeling! ;))

Which is your favorite of the movies? The Curse of the Black Pearl

Who is your favorite character? The Curse of the Black Pearl--Jack (duh :p ) and Will. On Stranger Tides--Jack, Philip and Syrena

Who is your favorite POTC actor/actress? Johnny Depp and Geoffery Rush

What do you think of the score????

What, for you, was the most surprising part in the movies? Captain Jack Sparrow :D

Have you seen the new movie? I liked it! It was a lot better than part 2 and 3. There were some things I didn't like, such as the voodoo, but overall it was a fun entertaining movie

Spoiler
I wonder, did the mermaid take him to drown him or heal him? That's something I didn't get. Does she want to help him by ending his suffering or healing him?

I think it was already mentioned further back in the thread but

Spoiler
when they're in the boat someone (scrum?... some pirate) says that it's said that a mermaid's kiss can save you from drowning. so since Serena kissed Philip he's alive when he's being dragged under water... whatever happens after that isn't explained in this movie

Outlier is correct about the mermaids--Booky and I were talking about that. Also, I think Booky noted that

Spoiler
in many sailor/mythical stories, it is not uncommon for one of the mer-people to take a human down to their underwater lands to live with them.

^^^ I've never heard of that before, but I could see it happening in stories... but not in a 5th movie or something like that...

Quick question, at the end of OST:

Spoiler
Why did Jack send Angelica to that island? My only idea is that it's becuause Jack knew that Angelica was really mad that he tricked her into killing her father :-

outlier, Oh, I see. Yeah, that would make sense :) Thanks for pointing it out.

As far as your question goes, the only answer I can think of is,

The first Pirates film has always been my favorite, I didn't care much for the second or third. I wasn't planning on seeing the fourth until the other day I turned on the classical radio station in the truck and heard the most AMAZING music...I thought it must be some brilliant composer, for an opera or something. Then they announce it's a track from the latest Pirates movie. ;)) I think it was the mermaids or something? At any rate, I'll be checking out the soundtrack if not the movie!

Glad you like it! The score was my introduction to the franchise as well. :) A friend used the theme from the first movie as background music for a slideshow. I listened and thought "What lovely, stirring music! Who composed this?!" (I'm a fan of strong, quick-tempoed orchestra pieces) I was rather surprised to learn that it was from PotC!

It's true, if there's one strong point in to PotC, it's the music. It's really moving and powerful, like LotR music. It's so captivating! The acting may be mediocre in some respects, the plot a bit unoriginal as time goes by, but the music is awesome!

Ooh, a PotC thread! :D

Which is your favorite of the movies? Curse of the Black Pearl, definitely.
Who is your favorite character? Jack Sparrow and Will Turner
Who is your favorite POTC actor/actress? Geoffrey Rush
What do you think of the score? It's AMAZING!
What, for you, was the most surprising part in the movies? I guess when Barbossa reappeared at the end of Dead Man's Chest.
Have you seen the new movie? Not yet, I plan to though! I've heard really good things about it.
How would you rate the POTC franchise in general? The first was spectacular, the second okay, and the third.... horrible. ;))

I actually watched Curse of the Black Pearl with my cousin just yesterday. He hadn't seen it yet, so it was a lot of fun. :)
