Lady Arwen, I like the 3rd option although all of them make sense.
As for the appearance of the mermaids, I think they were supposed to be more fish-like than woman-like. The nakedness was supposed to make them seem more savage/threatening.
I personally think the mermaids should have been more muscular, seeing as how much time they spend in the water. I was on swim team for a while as a teenager (2-4 hours swimming per day; sometimes up to 8 hours in the summer) and none of us girls were as thin as Syrena but we were all more toned. She just didn't have the swimmer's physique I expected.
Clothes I'm not sure on. I didn't like the visual gymnastics they had to run with to keep the hair in place. It was not the natural effect they were hoping for. If they wanted to avoid the sea-shell bikini, they could have just made the scales go up higher like in the concept art. Or perhaps some well-placed sea-weed might have been a better option.

My dad and I were going to try and see it in theaters, but I don't think we'll be able to with all the company we're getting right now. I'm so sad Oh well, we can rent it or buy it I guess.
they've gotten bigger and better and more dramatic with each movie and that they can't keep that up indefinetly.
I dunno...with all the new technology that keeps coming up, as long as they keep writing good storylines, this could last forever.
*feels a new, Star-Trek-esque series arising *

Oo, yes, they did the first part in the *one* scene where Serena doesn't have her hair over her front. Her scales come all the way up to the water's edge, which is nearly to her neck.
Sea-weed clothing...I like it. I could see a top reminiscent to the style Candice Night wears, cut to cover the area in concern, with somewhat ragged sea-weedy sleeves.

I dunno, I know in reality it should be that way, but on the other hand, don't mermaids swim more with their tails than their arms?
BTW, what did you all think of

I finally saw POTC 4 today! It was much better than I expected it to be. But not nearly as good as the first three. It had such a different atmosphere, it made me feel as if it was from a different atmosphere altogether. And since so many of the original characters were missing (Elizabeth, Will, Tia Dalma, Davy Jones, Pintel, Ragetti, Norrington, Beckett), I really felt the movie was lacking something. I didn't feel they added enough new characters to balance the lack. And what new characters they did add, though they were good/alright, they just weren't up to the standard that the really great characters from the previous films set. Nevertheless, it was well-made and entertaining. A few parts were a bit odd/cheesy, but not so much as to ruin the story in any way. The score was just alright. A bit of a disappointment after all the amazing scores the other films produced. The plot was pretty good; definitely better than I expected it to be. Though I thought it was a bit too simple. I prefer a complex plot with lots of twists and turns (Maybe that's why I liked the third film. I see one of the major complaints against that one was the complexity of the plot). But I don't know -- maybe that's just a matter of taste.
New Characters:

It's late, so I'll reply to your post in more detail tomorrow, but you reminded me of a theory I've developed, Ithi. I think, for some odd reason, Pintel and Ragetti can only be in odd numbered films. if you recall, they were missing from 2, too, over which I was heartbroken (jk, jk, but I did miss them). I'm hoping if they do a 5, those two will be back. My suspicion is that they're
About the score: the first time I went, I did feel that the score was very Bleh. However, having been dragged back to see it with the munchkins, I was able to spend a lot more time attending to details than having to keep track of which characters were where and etc and etc, and I found the soundtrack had somehow grown more complex.
Oh, and I also gleaned from this trip that

^^ LadyA... Pintel and Ragetti were in the second film. Ragetti was trying to read the Bible. And they both went after the chest. They've been in all the films, except the fourth.
The reason they weren't in the fourth is because the actors said they didn't want to do it anymore. So they probably won't be back.
~Riella
Okay, then who did I make the mental note was missing in 2 but returned for 3? There was someone...OH! I remember! It was the British soldiers that were basically the humor on the English side. My bad. I blame it on it being late...and on the auto correct.

I will concede the physiology could be different if you're powered by a fish tail so maybe not quite as muscular. But still, you're working your whole body when you swim so even just a little bit healthier looking and I would have been happier.

SpoilerHer scales come all the way up to the water's edge, which is nearly to her neck.Spoiler
And, actually, looking at a screen cap, it appears that they get light scales over all upper skin when underwater. See Gemma's face in this shot.
Angelica. I love the scene where she's fighting Jack dressed as Jack. I was amazed at how good a job they did making her look like him. Who would have guessed that Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz could look so much alike?
That scene was awesome! When I went with the munchkins, I did my best to pick out the little differences in their styles/clothing.
I really liked the fact that her main thrust was to save her father's soul. I'm sure a lot of Christians out there have felt that way about certain unsaved loved-ones; I know I have. And it gave Christians in the audience something to identify with, in a way that isn't common in the secular movie industry.
I found it interesting that, in a Hollywood film where the main characters are, let's face it, pretty much the antithesis of a Christian, that this film nearly glorified Christianity and strongly highlighted that there really was only one way to salvation--and it is not, as Jack put it, something you can get on an as-needed basis. All in all, I think this is a good example of a film where a Christian message was portrayed in a nice, subtle manner, not an in-your-face death-and-damnation way.
I think the main problem was they didn't have enough scenes, and so I didn't get to know them very well. I do like the way the missionary was portrayed in a positive light. I liked Serena as well, though we don't get to find out too much about her.
I agree, getting to know more about them would have been very nice.
They actually had a lot more face time in the fight, but it isn't really noticeable unless you're looking for it. She actually grabs him from the boat and hauls him to shore, but has to dodge other mermaids while she does it. The problem is, its really really hard to see. The only reason I saw it is because I was purposely looking for for it. Fortunately, the second time I saw it, it was in a different theatre, so the picture was clearer, or else I wouldn't have been able to spot them at all, I think, everything moves so fast. Anyway, she actually rescues him twice, once from the boat and again from getting hit in the head from the explosion.
One thing I didn't understand was what hapenned to them in the end. I saw her drag him under the water... but what hapenned after that? Does anyone know, and I just missed it? Or did they purposely leave that hanging?
You didn't miss anything. I'm not sure what happened, but she was obviously My dad's theory is that
No, I don't think so. I think what he was referencing is that
We do get to know one fairly well, though. And I loved him. His name was Scrum, I believe, and I think he helped a lot to ease the lack of previous pirate friends.
Aw, yes, I hope he comes back if they do more. I really liked him too. He isn't a "dirty" pirate, but rather reminds me a little bit of Santa.
He [Barbossa] acted much too prim and proper, even somewhat girly in that scene.
I think that was his way of successfully making them think he had joined their side. I found it hilarious, because I felt it was pretty obvious he was putting it on, and that wasn't really how he was. The difference between the two characters was best shown, I think, in the
Ugh, that bugged me too. I think their make-up was a bit over-done for him at the beginning, although I did note it got better once he got out to sea.
Me too.
Agreed. I didn't even notice he was there--hadn't been following the news too closely.
The picture quality was really bad. At least, in the version I saw. I don't know if there was just something wrong with the theater projector or if the film is really like that. but a lot of it was really blurry, shaky, and sometimes objects were doubled. We saw it in 2D, by the way.
I think it was the theatre you saw it in. I went to the same theatre building, but to a different actual theatre, and one of them had much better quality than the other did. It was nice and crisp in one and kinda went in-and-out of focus for the other. I saw it in 2D both times, also.
Much, much better than I was expecting. but not as good as it could have been, in my opinion.
The last two films I went to, I walked in expecting it to be completely awful, and ended up loving both of them. Maybe its because my expectations were so low.
But still, you're working your whole body when you swim so even just a little bit healthier looking and I would have been happier.
True.
Yeah, I was hoping to see more about them, too. I was disappointed, although I did think it was funny.
Me too. I guess it is because all the other stuff has mainly been just legend and myth items, whereas
If they destroyed it, then there would be little reason for anyone to try to battle them over the land. Why fight for something when what it has of value to you is gone? That's the best I could come up with, anyway, although I did think that part of the scene was cool.

Ooh cool, I like that picture. I didn't notice it when I saw it but it makes sense that their skin would turn to scales underwater. I'm glad that ended up in the movie. Having scales under water would protects the skin and increase speed and flexibility underwater. I've always been fascinated by mermaids and I liked a lot of things about how this film portrayed them.

Does anyone think or hope there will be another POTC movie? Even another trilogy?
How long do you think we'll have to wait before finding out? Does anyone know how the box office is doing for this movie?
~Riella
Which is your favorite of the movies? Curse of the Black Pearl.
Who is your favorite character?I like Elizabeth Swan for being a lady and a pirate, but find Jack funny... yeahhhh I don't really have a favorite, they're all pretty amazing
Who is your favorite POTC actor/actress? Performance wise Barbossa's probably my favorite, but like above I like mostly all of the actors/actresses... I thought it was cool that they had Chao Yun Fat in AWE cuz I wasn't really expecting it
What do you think of the score? Awesomeness, I've only heard it a couple times cuz my friend owns it and I don't but I always enjoy it
What, for you, was the most surprising part in the movies?
Curse of the Black Pearl:
Dead Man's Chest:
At World's End:
Have you seen the new movie? Not yet, I plan to though I've been hearing lots of good stuff on the forum, but the people I ask in person said it was just ok; I guess I'll just have to find out myself
How would you rate the POTC franchise in general? CBP was absolutely amazing, and then DMC felt like it was dragging.... AWE was a hot mess... overall I'd say that they're a pretty fantastic franchise and that they're good it's just that sometimes the plot feels like it's too complicated than it needs to be (like in Dead man's Chest and At World's End)
Does anyone think or hope there will be another POTC movie? Even another trilogy?
Well I assume it depends how well POTC4 does, but I saw in an interview somewhere (I think I saw it off of msn's homepage) that Johnny Depp would like to return, although he thinks it'll be a while till the next one

Which is your favorite of the movies?
I think 1 and 4 are tied currently.
Who is your favorite character?
Jack, of course. But Barbossa is a close second, with most of the minor characters following close behind. I'll be honest, I only liked Will and Elizabeth in the first movie and after the third I was happy to see the last of them.
Who is your favorite POTC actor/actress?
Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush and Bill Nighy.
What do you think of the score?
Liked the first, loved the second and third, liked the fourth and loved parts of it.
Have you seen the new movie?
Yes!
How does the new director compare with the director of the three previous films?
I thought he did a very good job.
How would you rate the POTC franchise in general?
One of my all-time favorites, right up there with Star Wars and LotR.
General Thoughts on PotC 4:
The score is a bit lacking on CD, a criticism Inception's score shares, but works fantastically in the movie. Never going to get tired of watching fight scenes set to He's a Pirate.
As usual, it's a gorgeous-looking movie. They find the most beautiful places to film.
I absolutely love the fact that we finally got an unambiguously good character in the franchise in the fourth movie and he's a Christian. That's very cool.
On the mermaids:
Philip the Missionary and Syrena:
The Spanish:

Is Jack becoming more ethical from the first movie to this one? Or would he have been just as horrified by something like that in CBP?
