I only lasted about twelve books into the Elsie Dinsmore series. Single most annoying book heroine ever. She makes the Disney princesses look good. :P

I've read two books of Elsie Dinsmore. The first one and the third one. I bought the third one because I was in a book store and it was the thickest Elsie book in there. :p (We had a long car trip ahead of us) At the time, I liked the books.

I now greatly dislike them and haven't read them in a long time. She is so meek and lets everyone walk all over her! And she cries 24/7 over everything. I cry over stuff too sometimes but she's a little over the top it seems like. She's just too good so she gets on my nerves. I'd rather read a book about someone who does something BAD once in awhile.

I finished "Though the Looking Glass" today and I rewatched the trailer for Alice in Wonderland coming out in March and I can already see things from the books in the film. I'm really glad I read both the books before the movie comes out.
I Love seeing things come to life on screen! :)

I agree narnian_at_heart and Bookwyrm. She is way too perfect. The only "sin" I remember her doing was taking her little brother away from her dad when he was spanking him /:) :p

Hello,

Popping in for a über-short while here.

I love McCloskey, too, narnian-at-heart! Didn't he also write a book or two about babysitting? I did like those as a young'un. [:)]

Yay for Chestnut King! I'm glad to find there are some other Wilson fans here! Haven't read this latest one yet 'cause I am currently swamped. I've also got his Right Behind on my list. Anything mocking Left Behind is right up my alley! [:p]

Literary news from the last several months:

Did I ever mention that I was inflicted with varicella last summer? I spent that week and a half sleeping, moanin', groanin', and reading Anna Karenina. I loved that book! I was really impressed with Tolstoy's writing and pacing and characters and the "moral" hit really close to home. Of course I put War and Peace on the too read!

Other recent-is reads were Crime and Punishment, Frankenstein, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Bonhoffer's The Cost of Discipleship, Paine's Common Sense, Animal Farm.... :)

At the end of last month I finally lent my sister my copy of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell which, I am happy to report, she liked. Except for the ending which she thought was pretty bad and basically dampened the whole book for her. [:(] Anyone know anything about a sequel? I've also unconsciously convinced my friend, Scott, to read it. Last night he told me that, so far, it was "pretty decent."

Same friend also loaned me The Princess Bride on Sunday which I read that day and liked. It and the movie rank about equal for me. Fluffy, enjoyable ungeniusness. I love Inigo and Fezzik.

I spent the last 3-4 months of '09 reading War and Peace and I liked it pretty well. I liked it in an off and on manner. On the story books I like it a lot and in the philosophy books I didn't like it so well. I often have a hard time following things like that. [:(] The parts I liked I like a lot. I also thought Natashya was an immature nit-wit. [;)] I like Sonya and felt pretty bad for her at the end.

Currently I am reading a 70yo. book about the Revolutionary War that isn't too great. Poorly written, cliché, predictable. What a joy! [:p] Soon I think I shall try my hand at Tolkien--gasp! Rejoice all you Tolkien worshippers, I am giving in! [;)]

EDIT: I see the code for smilies isn't what it once was.

Finally read Out of the Silent Planet today! Liked it quite a bit and cannot wait for Perelandra (sp?). It was fun to learn about all the creatures in Malacandra and the way they got named.

I read Out of the Silent Planet a few years ago. I started Perelandra right afterwards but then got so busy that I never finished it! :(( I would love it if they made a movie out of these books. I'm hoping to read the whole Space Trilogy before the end of the year is over. :)

Only 3 chapters to go for my first reading of The Hobbit. Ever hear of it? :D A certain old thrush told me our Watchful Admin and LOTS may have. ;)

An interesting turn of events with the dragon Smaug, the men of Lake-town and the Wood-elves, and Bilbo and the dwarves. I'm really liking it and will be a little sad to finish it. :(

I think I understand why they will make it into two movies instead of one. There is an awful lot going on in the first half just to get to the Lonely Mountain.

Happy reading all!

GlimGlum: I'm glad you're liking The Hobbit, I love it, it's really great. There is a lot going on, but actually I think that one of the movies they're making is going to be the time between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.

@Glenstorm the Great: Your right they were going to make a bridge film between The Hobbit and the Fellowship of the Ring, but a few months ago they changed their minds because The Hobbit contained so much material. So now they are splitting the Hobbit into two films. Part 1 comes out 2011, Part 2 comes out the following year in 2012. :)

I tried to read Percy Jackson but I didn't get any farther than the first two pages because of the complicated plot and the weird beggining! that book makes no sense and is basically just a Harry potter rip-off!
