Beatrix Potter, possibly most famous for her beloved character Peter Rabbit... Here's where you can discuss her books!
What are your favorite books and characters?
My favorites are probably The Tale of Two Bad Mice, The Tale of Mr. Todd, The Pie and the Patty Pan, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Ginger and Pickles, the Tale of Samuel Whiskers. oh, and Mrs. Tiggy Wiggle.
I grew up reading Peter Rabbit, Two Bad Mice, Squirrel Nutkin, and Mrs Tiggy Wiggle, but then when I got a bit older my parents discovered the rest of the books and I was able to read them for myself. I love rereading them cause I have so many nice memories about them.
I recently discovered the big book called "The Ultimate Peter Rabbit" which has trivia about the books, characters, and Beatrix Potter. It said that she based alot of her drawings of scenery and places on real places, and then it had photos of the locations now with the illustrations alongside. So cool! If you're a fan, I'd definetly reccomend checking that book out.
Post away!

I adored these stories back in the early nineties when I was just 3 up till the second grade. My kindergarten teacher would read them all the time and we would watch Peter Rabbit the cartoon. how I miss those perfect days I want them back so badly.

As many books as I had as a kid, I don't remember ever reading these books. Although the name Peter Rabbit was always familiar to me. A few years back I saw the movie Miss Potter, a movie about Beatrix Potter. The movie was great, but it was her books that caught my eye most. The day I saw the movie I bought it, along with the two volumes of her book/movies.
Vol 1 took me forever to watch, in fact I just recently saw the first episode, Peter Rabbit, again for the 5th time I think- and gradually went on through the remainder of the disc.
Vol 2 I haven't yet started, but i hope to get to it soon. I will then say which are my favorites.
Hurrah for Beatrix Potter! I remember many afternoons spent reading our little boxed sets of all of her marvelous books. Some of the longer ones I didn't read, I just browsed through the marvelous illustrations. I gradually started actually reading them once I got a little bit older. I despised Peter when I was little. He was so very naughty! Squirrel Nutkin also bothered me. How could he be so rude? But of course he learns his lesson in the end and I suppose that is the point.
My all time favorite is The Tailor of Gloucester. Not only a delightful little tale about the mice, but also a lovely fairy-tale wrapped in a Christmas bow.
I have not yet seen Miss Potter, but I have heard that it was very good.
We had a little boxed set growing up (tiny, of course, true to Beatrix's desire for her books to be small enough for children to hold). I always loved Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck, and others. But I always found one of them creepy. I can't remember which it was. I think maybe The Tale of Two Bad Kittens?
I saw Miss Potter, but I didn't like it that much. I thought it was kind of boring.

This is my favourite as well. I also like the The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.
Does it bother anyone else when different artists try to illustrate her books? I am especially irritated by the cartoon-y ones. It's like they're trivialising the work she put into her books. However, we had a pop-up set for Peter Rabbit that was equally detailed, but which had a more photographic quality than Potter's dreamy watercolours. That one was okay, but I think I read it before I saw the originals...

We had a movie of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny that was obviously animated by different artists. I remembered thinking that the style was pretty similar. It definitely had a watercolor-ish effect.
Yeah I was digging in my closet a few months back and found an animated version of Peter Rabbit. I think it was Hallmark, I can't really remember because it's sti9ll in one of my moving boxes.

Mel, that definetly bothers me! To me, Beatrix Potter's illustrations are as much a part of the books as the words themself. Taking away the pictures seems to cheapen them . I remember seeing the cartoons once and thinking they were pretty decent though. They definetly had a Beatrix Potter "feel".

Ooh, I love that one as well! I love the pictures with the detailing of embroidery, it's simply scrumptious! Also, a interesting tidbit I learned from the Ultimate Peter Rabbit book--you may remember in the beginning of The Tailor of Gloucester she makes a note of saying she heard the story was true. In the Ultimate Peter Rabbit it says some years after the story was published, the tailor's two assistants came forward and said they were the ones who had worked secretly on the coat while the tailor was in bed. I thought that was pretty cool, although at the same time I did kinda of wish it was mice who'd done it.

Peter Rabbit was one of my favorites when I was little and I read lots of her books! I have a whole thick collector's book of her stories!

Kate, I think an animated movie is different-- I totally understand not wanting to draw all the details in each and every frame! -- than just re-illustrating the books.
On the other hand, I think I wouldn't mind fan-art if it stayed as fan-art, not published books with alternate illustrations. But then I think that it would be fun to have a book collection of those illustrations, because I'm assuming that some of them would be good, but... *should stop before she confuses herself*

Same here! Wow, it's been so long since I've seen them, though, that I almost forgot about them!
I also have one of the books...I forget which. I think it's a volume with a couple different stories. Of those stories, the one I remember most is The Tale of Mr. Tod.
Of the movies, I remember watching The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, and The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies. But my favorite is The Tailor of Gloucester.

Oh, I LOVE that one too! I really like watching it during Christmas!
Last time me and my sister watched it we noticed that Ian Holm did the voice of the tailor, and being a huge Lord of the Ring fans we thought it was funny it was Bilbo's voice.
I don't know why but I like the part where all the different animals are having parties and the cats start singing, if I remember the scene correctly.
