It was nice to finally find out a little more about the end of the Time War, like why it was necessary to destroy Gallifrey. I wish they had made it known in the episode who the mysterious Time Lady was. According to Wikipedia, Julie Gardner said that she was the Doctor's mother. I don't know why they couldn't have taken two seconds to say that. I did think the regeneration was ridiculously drawn out, although it was cool to see the old companions again. Never would have thought Martha and Mickey would end up together, but I'm glad they finally got him somebody after the way Rose treated him. :P And speaking of Rose, I didn't actually mind her presence in the special. ;))

Finally watched it- have to say I watched the first part the day after it was released in the UK and was really disappointed, but the second part completed it wonderfully. The first part just seemed so random without the answers in the conclusion and it was a pain to wait and wait until it was released. But be encouraged if you haven't seen both yet because it is an awesome ending. :D

It's empty in the valley of your heart. The sun, it rises slowly as you walk. Away from all the fears. And all the faults you've left behind.

So long...for now.

Ok... so I have finally watched both episodes back to back. I've seen them before now. I just didn't want to comment until I saw them together.

First half: major spoilers for the episode

Spoiler
Not crazy about it. The way they brought the Master back was too weird. Didn't fit in at all. I flinched every time there were references to certain politicians (will not say more on this subject) because it now dates that special horribly. One of the good things about the way some tv shows handle government stuff is by using characters specific to that show and not real life. The Ood were a nice touch especially in helping refresh memories and catching people up if they haven't seen previous seasons. A bit less tired than the traditional "telling of the backstory". Wilf was wonderful. I loved the "silver cloak." Donna was a nice addition and even if they didn't really bring her back, it adds a nice bookend on that storyline.

Second half: major spoilers

Spoiler
Much much better than the first half in the way they told the story. It was much tighter and I didn't feel that it was dragging out. Wilf was brilliant in this one as well. The Donna bit was a nice wrap up. Nice to see her with a happy ending. Mickey and Martha... hmmm... interesting combination. The clips were interesting book ends. It was nice to see Rose again, but I hope that's where they leave it. They'll overdo it if they bring her back anymore. Interesting twist bringing back in the Time Lords and how the drumbeat figured into the Master's character. Does anyone know if the sound in his head was figured into any previous appearances in the original run? As it is sci fi and no one really stays dead, I shouldn't be surprised to have him show back up in the future.

And of course, David Tennant was brilliant as well. I've seen episodes with the 4th, 9th, and 10th doctors now. I'd have to say that my favorite doctor was either the 4th or the 10th, but Tennant seems to do slightly better in portraying emotions with his voice than the 4th as from what I remember, he always sounded similar even when portraying Puddleglum in the BBC SC.
