[Closed] Dawn Treader Poster - Concept Drawings?

Just stumbled across the website of an artist called Otto "Tito" Stürcke who would seem to be an artist who amongst other things does concept sketches/posters for various movies. On his biography it says..

Much of his work also involves developing art for film and television, having now created for more than 200 projects. His current projects include conceptualizing and sketching art for Disney's "Bolt", "Curious George 2", "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with Brendon Frasier, and "My Name Is Earl" with Jason Lee.

Anyway, amongst his various drawings in his gallery, he has a total of 5 pieces indicated as being "Voyage of the Dawn Treader Poster Concept Sketches" (3 can be found in the posters folder, 2 can be found in the sketches folder). However, it should be noted that there is absolutely no other information to say anything about these sketches - whether or not they were done as officially contracted work from the studio, whether or not he did them himself for his own pleasure, when they were done, whether or not they were rejected, how much information he was given when drawing them, etc etc. They could be at any number of stages of incompleteness and they could of been used to illustrate any number of potential concepts.

So don't read too much (if anything) into them, though they are however very much worth checking out. At the very least, they are some of the best sketches of the movie-design Dawn Treader i've seen yet. You should be able to see all 5 pieces by going to this link:

A few points to note on the main black and white poster sketch (which would appear to be most similar to a standard poster design) - Although the Dawn Treader is drawn in the style of the set at Cleveland point, Caspian is drawn in the style in which he appeared in Prince Caspian, and the drawing of Reepicheep is in the exact same pose as he appeared on the PC poster. And yes, that does appear to be the White Witch on the right hand side, but there are any number of reasons why he may of thrown that in there as part of a rough concept sketch, so don't worry about that.

I would treat it in very much the same vein as the concept sketches we saw a while back for possible VDT toys - they had been drawn with some basic known concepts from the new movie, but were predominantly based on visuals from the Prince Caspian movie.

^Another thing to note is that Aslan is almost identical to the LWW poster. Nice find though, to bad I can't get the pictures any bigger.

Liked the first one, until I looked over to the right side and realized that, oh crud, it's the White Witch... ;))

But eh, it's concept! I do like the way the first one was put together, though,. Very attention-grabbing. I wouldn't mind having the poster look like that, minus the WW of course!

I have to say that I absolutely love the very last one with Aslan and the Dawn Treader for a teaser poster. I think I love it because it brings back the memories of what The Lion King Poster looked like.
If the person contrasted Caspian, Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace and made RD on the left side instead of the WW that would make the ultimate poster ever.

Update: Those concept toys look so cute. I will definitely collect all of them. It makes me think if Lucy is actually going to use a bow and arrow. She was really good with it in the Golden Age.

Today i found an interview with Otto "Tito" Sturcke (the person who drew the poster images mentioned in the first post) and in the interview he mentions that he is indeed doing the art direction for the Voyage of the Dawn Treader poster:

Concept art tends be just that, concept drawings that will eventually, through passage of the executives, move on to become the final art or finished poster that will hopefully translate well to your audience. So far I’ve worked on at least 200 projects that some thankfully have been very successful. I’m currently working on art directing the poster for “Narnia 3, The Dawn Treader”.

So there you go. Given what he says about the nature of concept art though, you can imagine that the images he put up on his website contain ideas and designs which didn't quite make the cut.

Going back to that main black and white poster concept sketch....

I guess the big picture of Aslan's face in the background was always a given for the main poster (see VDT theatre standee), and we probably would of expected to see a similar dynamic shot of the Dawn Treader on the main poster as well (see Narnia.com main page image) but given now we know that the White Witch does indeed appear in VDT and that she has appeared on just about every piece of marketing so far, and that Reepicheep has appeared in that exact pose on just about every piece of marketing so far, i honestly wouldn't expect the final poster design to be too different.

Obviously the looks of Caspian and WW and the other characters will be updated to reflect their new VDT looks (see similar arrangements of floating heads from the theatre standee here and here) , but aside from that i'd be very surprised if it was drastically different from what you see in that concept sketch.

I wanted to share with everybody an email that NarniaWeb received last Friday.

Hi, just wanted to say hi to the fans of Narnia out there, and that I very much appreciate the compliments of the work I did for Narnia's Dawn Treader. Reading some the the posts, I noticed people had questions regarding my work. Well, I'd be more than happy to answer some. Please feel free to email me some questions regarding the poster work I did for Narnia. Although as a freelance artist, I am contractually bound to some discretion, I will freely answer all that I can about the work contracted of me by the studio and their ad companies. I can tell you that I'm very excited to see the teaser posters that are very reminiscent of the work I illustrated. Thank you very much, Otto Sturcke

:)

Otto's email address can be found on his website (which icarus provided a link for at the top of the page) if you wish to write him!

It seems now that Lucy using a bow and arrow for this movie from the concept art of toys was true. :D This makes me happy!!
