Okay, any horrible rumours, that need to be immediately quashed, can be put here.
I read something today suggesting that big companies are warning Netflix off a cinema release of Gerwig's first Narnia film. Couldn't find it again, but I found this one:
There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
"...when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."
I've seen that story get picked up by.a few of the amateur movie news sites, based on a tweet that someone made a day or so ago, and my assessment on it is as follows:
- The first part is almost certainly true. The big studios are always squabbling over access to IMAX screens (see last summer's Mission Impossible vs Oppenheimer dust-up) and the theatre chains are very defensive about their exclusivity windows on distribution deals. Therefore of course they are all going to be unhappy if Greta Gerwig block books all the IMAX screens for a couple of weeks, and then releases on streaming not long after.
- The second part of his argument however is a huge logical leap, and one that doesn't really hold up at all (admittedly he does preface it by saying "I think..."). Firstly you would have to assume that "Studios and Theatres unhappy" equates to "IMAX deal canceled" which isn't necessarily true. And you would then have to assume that "IMAX deal canceled" equals *Greta Gerwig to Quit" and in turn "Entire Project Dead". None of which are plausible leaps.
A large part of his argument (and others like him who've posited similar theories) seems to be based on the idea that before Barbie, Greta Gerwig was a naive nobody who took the Narnia gig out of desperation and didn't really know what she was getting herself in for by signing with a streamer, but that now she's a huge big-shot she wants out, and would use the excuse of not having a theatrical distribution to jump ship.
The reality is that Greta Gerwig was a multi-Oscar nominated director when she signed on to do Narnia, and has had a very strong working relationship with Netflix over the last few years through her production company NB/GG Pictures, who have worked with Netflix on no less than 3 of her husband's movies.
We've also seen from the other rumour threads recently that Production appears to be gathering momentum at Shepperton, and that Greta looks to be in no mood to suddenly "rage quit" on us.
I'm not saying it won't ever happen, but at present the evidence all says otherwise.
My heart skipped a beat when I read this thread's title. It was a relief to find it was about awful rumors we'd already (sort of) heard and not new ones.
For better or worse-for who knows what may unfold from a chrysalis?-hope was left behind.

@coracle, I have temporarily changed the title of the thread because unfortunately this rumor has gained some traction. Hopefully those wandering onto the forum will more easily find this thread and read @icarus's response up above.
Feel free to delete my change at a later date.
