Disappointed by the Quality of Narnia Books

There definitely was one calendar with Baynes' pictures many years ago. I've got it - only I've recently moved house, it's in storage somewhwere, and I need to sort through the storage items to find it.

I think there were not only pictures from the books, there may also have been a couple that were originally made as book covers, but most were book illustrations.

And most of the pictures were of happy and pleasant scenes, but there was at least one that included evil creatures. I wouldnt display that on the wall. But I didn't tear it off and throw it away either. I should be able to have a look at it at times. It's great art.

A few years ago, when coloring books were a great hit, even of book illustrations that you could color in your own way, there was also a Narnian coloring book. I bought it, not to color anything, but to get large versions of her line drawings. I think that book is in storage, too. I want it on my bookshelf.

Was the calendar available for only one year?   I suppose that they don’t sell as many Narnia calendars as the books, and that is the reason why they haven’t been made in recent years. Tolkien calendars have been created every year so apparently people do purchase them. There are calendars available for many interests (e. g. I buy a lighthouse calendar of Michigan each year), but I haven’t seen any of Narnia for years. But there are many copies available of all seven books.  It would be nice if there were a large book entirely devoted to Pauline Baynes’ Narnia illustrations. That would be just as good as a well illustrated calendar.

Only that one year, as far as I know, and I guess that I would have heard about it if there had been another the next year.

I guess the main reason that there are so many more Tolkien calendars is that there are so many more artists that have illustrated Tolkien's works. There are several different book covers of the Narnia books, too, but hardly any with new illustrations inside the books - Pauline Baynes rules almost supreme in that area, and I'd say for a reason.

Also, there are so many more pages of material to make illustrations from in Tolkien's works (and written over so many more years). With so many more illustrations, it's so much easier to fill up Tolkien calendars over years and years. (And then there have been the movie illustrations as well - btw, were there any Narnia movie calendars? I don't remember any off-hand.)

EDIT:

I just saw in a different thread in this forum that Narnia movie calendars were mentioned. So I may only not have seen them in any Norwegian bookshops at the time.

Indeed ...

I know of at least two Narnia movie calendars that had pictures from two of the Walden films The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. I have only the first one. They are both out of print. The Dawn Treader film did not have a calendar probably because the movie did not do so well at the box office.  I don’t think there were any calendars with pictures from the BBC series because that program did not make very much money. I don’t know of any books written about that series, although the first Walden film had at least one guide.
