[Closed] Shasta and Aravis

*pops in, nervously shielding eyes from any spoilers till December 25th*

Just a small visit while trying to avoid spoilers, no matter how tempting they are. I have here a small pencil drawing of Cor (though at the point captured by the drawing still named Shasta) and Aravis, having one of those numerous rows during their shared escape. I just wanted to try my hand at drawing them, seeing as I've never done those two before.

I had fun copying Aravis' brother's armour from the lovely pictures by Pauline Baynes, and I decided to have her lose one vambrace, maybe on one of the adventures Lewis didn't put in, and which they had during the journey :) And I gave Shasta some trousers, and thank goodness I didn't have to draw boots because I'd surely give him the Telmarine-like hide boots which I love so much, and it wouldn't work since he's supposed to be barefoot. Also, I made them a tad older, as befitting the pattern of the films.

Anyway, cutting my insufferable ramble, please take a look and tell me what you think, I hope desperately that you will like it :)

I rather like Cor. I also love the armor; great work on that!

The bit that could be improved is firstly, Aravis's femininity. She looks very masculine. Maybe it's something to do with the way the hat's on her head or her eyes. I can't tell for sure.

Also, the hands are placed a bit awkwardly.

Good shading, though! I love the clothes.

Thanks! Cor gave me some trouble since I was determined to make his head tilted at an angle. As per Aravis - I was actually going out of my lengths to make her not too feminine, firstly I always imagined her as a bit of a tomboy, and secondly the helmet adds a lot to the masculine feeling about her. She also has more Arabic features, and the femininity of those features is a bit different than western. Plus, take the fact that she's pulling an angry/challenging face under notice. Personally, I'm very satisfied with how she came out, just as I wanted her to. Thanks for the shading comment... though there isn't really much of it in the drawing :p

It's a very dynamic and expressive pose. I think you captured both characters quite well. I think the fun you were having with the drawing also shines through. :D HHB is one of my favourite books, so yay there as well!

In my opinion, Aravis' helmet is crooked, which distracts from the overall impression. I think (not having the illustration or other example in front of me) that the rim would fall just above her ear, and then the ear flaps (is the technical name for that an aventail? Maybe?) would cover the ear and the back of the neck instead of stopping at the jawline.

Maybe you were trying to imply that it had shifted in the heat of the argument because it's slightly too big for her?

Anyway, it's really lovely! I hope you do more with them. :D

Yay, thanks a lot :) I'm glad the pose came out dynamic, I was working my hand off to make it so! *celebrates* Thanks, I really had fun drawing this, I'm glad it shows :) Aravis' helmet? *shuffles through the book* Hmm, indeed, the earflaps (I just love how that sounds when describing a part of a helmet XD) end at her jawline... next time I'll be sure to get it right, and for now let's just say I tried to give a pinch of my personal design to it ;) As per the tilt, if I'm to be honest originally I intended it to be on straight, but when it came out crooked I looked twice at it and decided I'll leave it so it looks like it got tilted in the heat of the argument. Thanks again!

The best thing about this is Cor's and Aravis's facial expressions, I even like the pencil shadings.

Wow! You are really good! Much better than i could do. I would have made Aravis more pretty, and Shasta's cheek is kinda big, but still great work! I want to hire you as my illustrator! lol. EXCELLENT shading and very realistic!

Aw, thanks very much! Oh, you draw? I hope you post some work of yours here. Welcome to NW, by the way :D Oh, I for some reason never imagined Aravis to be very pretty, just mildly pretty, and here she's scowling so I can hardly make her look pretty, heh! Yeah, Shasta's cheek... it's a result of me trying to tilt his head at an angle, you know, in some mocking defiance... I guess I failed bad at some point... *ponders* Thank you very much, you're very kind in your review :)

Yes i draw some, i'm not that good but if i try really hard i can come out with something pretty good. Yes i imagine her mildly pretty too- i guess you're right. Yes, it is hard to do dramatic expressions, hehe, that's why i don't even attempt yet. i'm good at critique, but not good at actually drawing myself. oh well, i'm still learning.

I hope you'll post some of your drawings here :) Oh, I just never imagined Aravis as very pretty, she just didn't seem the type to me, so I drew her like this. Dramatic expressions are so very hard to get right, but after practice they become a bit easier. I'm still learning, too :)

Oh Wow Begine! :D This is beautiful!
The detail especially in Aravis’ armor and both their expressions! :D
I Love the shading, Awesome Job! :)
