A website from another fandom compiled a collection of fan stories written by various members and made it into a book. The end result was pretty impressive. I`m not sure how they worked things out with copyright laws though. They compiled quite a bit of poems and stories. The cover designs looked very professional. I assume the art was supplied by members as well. I guess the same rules apply as for posting fan fiction a disclaimer must be noted. I think their going to sell the books to fan groups and such. I don`t think they are allowed to sell it to the general public. Anyway I thought it was a good idea. They also designed bookmarks to match the book. Having a giant Narnia fan book filled with art, poems and stories would be an interesting fan project. What do you guys think?
If it is anything that goes against CS Lewis' original work like adding Suspian, etc, to these fan stories no i think it would be an awful idea. I think it would be wrong because it would ruin these great stories and they are classics too in future generations to come.
If it was fan stories based 100% off of CS Lewis and making them into short stories then I guess I wouldn't be against it. But don't change the classic endings.
What has this new generation become? It's like all about opinions and teams now trying to twist them into facts because people can't stand or appreciate original work anymore.
Long Live King Caspian & Queen Liliandil Forever!
Jill+Tirian! Let there be Jilrian!
MaidenofNarnia, having checked this out before, I can tell you that publishing anything using Lewis' material without permission from the CSLewisCo is not a good idea - breach of copyright is a type of theft and the company treats all these very seriously.
You say "I guess the same rules apply as for posting fan fiction a disclaimer must be noted." In fact the use of the material online is also illegal.
"I think their going to sell the books to fan groups and such. I don`t think they are allowed to sell it to the general public."
They are not allowed to publish OR sell, whether to fans or general public.
(Just think - how would your family like it if you were a famous writer and someone did this to YOUR work after you died?)
Do I understand that the other site wasn't a Narnia one?
EDIT: I've found this very good article online. It talks about fan fiction, copyright and getting sued. It's by an American lawyer so it is specific to USA. British publishers and copyright owners may act differently.
There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
"...when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."
It was just a thought. If no one wants to do this project than that`s fine.
Edit : This website had nothing to do with Narnia.
Also, many people post stories on Fan fiction.net that are based on books including Narnia. Deviant art also hosts artwork with characters from the Narnia books. So I didn`t really see the difference. The common thing is to list a disclaimer as not being the owner of the work. It is a fan`s depiction of the copy righted material.
Well it isn't technically that people don't want to, it's the asking permission and paying money in the millions that is the problem. Plus I agree with coracle, a family like Douglas Gresham who signed with the company would never allow it to happen anyways.
I think fanfiction should stay on their proper sites. I too agree where DamselJillPole is coming from too. If something like that were to be public and sold in a book it would be this generations story and CS Lewis's classics would be lost. Isn't that kind of the point of the Narnia series? The point is that the stories doesn't make you feel lost.
Not Suspian!
