How to Train Your Dragon is another example of a good movie but horrible adaptation. I don't see why they felt like they had to change it. Does anyone think they will have learned their lesson and get MN right? If they make changes but not too many and keep a good story I'm okay.

I don't have much of a problem with the filmmakers changing things. It's the filmmakers' movie after all, and it's not like they're erasing or re-writing the books themselves.
What disappoints me is when they just make cheap uninteresting movies (which is what VDT was to me, along with a lot of other movies mentioned here). It's like most of the movies nowadays just don't have the same quality that films used to have. They seem kind of cheap, and all the same.
I feel like calling them "recession movies", because really, what it feels like is that they can't afford to make a decent one, so they just go with what little they can do. Whether that's the real problem or not, I don't know. But it just seems like the quality of movies is going down with each passing year.
