I wrote letters to Fox and Walden a few weeks ago. I received a response back from Fox (signed by someone in their legal dept) recently. They sent my whole letter back to me thinking I was pitching a script idea for VDT when I was only pointing out things I didn't think worked in the film. The response then proceeded to tell me that in order for my submission to be accepted that I had to have a literary agent and belong to the Writers' Guild of America. So far, I've not had a response back from Walden.
Word of advice....keep your letters brief. I think it was just that mine went on for three pages which maybe made it look like I was pitching a script.

Yeah if your letter was that long the person who read it probably read only five sentences or one paragraph. Trust me industry people don't like to have their time wasted. Next time yes have your letter be brief and straight forward to the point and dont repeat things that have already been said and make your paragraphs really short. They can read faster that way.
Edit*
BTW, this is probably why they don't stick to the books because they prossibly skim over really important details.

I think it's good that you wrote to them to tell them about likes and dislikes...why would you be pitching a script when the film already came out?
Its a bit off that they don't appreciate that you obviously spent a lot of time writing this letter, and there were probably some good things in there as well as bad things i'm guessing, but I also know that as DamselJillPole said, they don't really read the letters, they just skim through. I was contemplating writing a letter campaigning for SC but loads of people have done that already and it didn't seem to do anything...the deed is done-MN is next. If they did read letters, i think that they may see better what fans want from the franchise. But good for you anyway

At least Walden didn't return my letter about VDT, they probably read and kept it. I plan to write them again about the Silver Chair even if it doesn't do any good. At least I feel better after doing so. I don't think I'll write Fox again though, they don't seem as responsive.

Why would anyone conceive the idea that you were pitching a script for a film that's already been made, not to mention released... It's surprising that you actually received a response in the first place, stateofgreen, as these large industry company's hardly ever reply to any outside mail that does not relate directly to subjects they are currently dealing with, and even then exclusively from within a group of specific people. Based on the fact that whoever it was that read the letter, their further response appears to disregard your letter, as the person believes your 'pitching' can only be sent and accepted from legitimate agencies.
So if I'm understanding correctly, stateofgreen, you wrote letters to both Fox & Walden Media with feedback and your personal thoughts on how well they adapted the film in relation to the book, wherein you also mentioned some aspects that you did not think were well presented within the film....
I don't mean to sound negative at all; believe me, I support the fact that you were bold enough to compose such letters and send them off with your ideas, but as much as I would like to see otherwise, the chances of anyone actually thoroughly reading your letter and responding to it with your ideas in mind, takes a bit of time and consideration on their part. It doesn't hurt for you to try and send another letter; just as others have mentioned, keeping it brief and to the point, creates a greater opportunity for someone actually reading it and understanding what your getting at.
Good luck!

Don't bother complaining to them about the shortcomings of VDT's adaption. From their perspective, the movie's already been made, and you've already bought the ticket. Nothing can really be changed at this point.

Was the letter personalized at all? It was probably just an automated response. They most likely get dozens of letters every day from people with script ideas.
The same sort of thing happened to my sister with Frito-Lay. On their potato chip bags they always say, "Betcha can't eat just one!" My sister only ate one and wrote them a long letter about it. She got a formulaic response that said, "Thank you for your letter! It is always good to receive mail from our young fans..."
It was a form letter but actually signed by a human attorney from the Fox legal dept. I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere....I just had to let it out.
At least Walden didn't return my letter...hopefully someone read it and then put it in the circular file.

At least writing helps you to air your feelings and gives you your chance to air your opinions. But please be aware that 98% of books ever written and sent to a publisher never get published at all. Especially if the authors try to do everything themselves. I expect that is the same situation with film scripts. That is why Fox mentioned agents who make a profession out of being middlemen/women. I learned all this during my librarianship degree.
Now when you write about something completely different, it is amazing that a big company like Fox was courteous enough to at least take your letter seriously enough to reply the way it did. It also says something good about the quality and courtesy of your own writing. I expect that Fox, Warner Brothers, etc, gets heaps of letters over one thing or another, protesting about this or that, much of which end up in the wastepaper, especially if they are badly written, badly spelled and full of pejoratives.
