I think that the Darl Island should just be there! In the book it doesn't say that Aslan made it, or the WW made it, it's just there. And I think that is the way it sould be in the movie

I think part of the reason why the Dark Island is scary in the book is because it's just there. There's no explanation for where it came from, who made it, how it works, it's just there. I'm not even remotely a fan of the idea of making it this sentient scheming evil, but I hope they've left its origins mysterious, because that's usually a lot more interesting than an actual explanation.

I'm going to say it exists on it's own, second guess would be that in LB they reveal that it, along with other things, was Tash's fault.

Btw guys just for clarification, I was talking about what you think it WILL be in the movie. Not what you or Lewis WANT to be the Dark Island creator.

I think that the Dark Island has always just been there, and the White Witch is just a dream from the Dark Island.

I think they won't bother explaining the Dark Island. I said it just existed.

Well in the movie, when talking about the darkness, Lilliandil says "soon it will become unstoppable." If its just been there, why would the Dark Island suddenly become unstoppable?

Maybe it was growing? I guess we will just have to wait and see which way the scriptwriters have butchered it. :(

I also think it's growing. Like it started small and now it's bigger :- :-

The whole "growing darkness" thing, just sounds really, I dunno, cliched-fantasy to me. Were the filmmakers really so desperate for a villain that they had to mess up the Dark Island? Ick.

To me, the Dark Island in the book was sort of like a black hole type of thing. Yes, it was terrible and dangerous and not somewhere I would like to be, but it wasn't necessarily a sentient evil or the creation of anybody like the White Witch. Black holes just exist on their own (well, technically they form when a star dies, but that's not the point); yes, they draw in everything in their path and being stuck in one would be a very, very painful death, but they're not evil. The Dark Island isn't exactly a black hole, but to me there's a sort of parallel.
So the fact that they seem to be making the Dark Island out to be some sort of horrible evil thing that's set on devouring the world (why, exactly? other than the fact that it's "dark" and therefore must want to devour the world by dint of fantasy stereotype? grr) annoys me. :-w

This was kind of a long post. I hope you understood my rambling.

I originally voted "Aslan", because I thought that He was the only being with creative power, and that He created that world, so He must have created the Dark Island, perhaps in a purer form that fell when evil entered Narnia with the WW.

But then I changed my vote to "it was just there", still supporting my original idea. I don't think Aslan could create anything actually evil, per say, but maybe He created something that was later misused for an evil purpose by someone else. It's very possible. I have a hard time believing that anybody other than Aslan could actually have the power to create something. Evil is not original. Evil only mimics and copies. So, I think that the Dark Island is either something that Aslan created that fell to a dark state, or is something that was made as a dark replica of some other creation of Aslan's.

EDIT: I just realized that the intention of this thread is for our opinion on what is actually going to be in the movie, rather than what I think it really is. Guess it helps to read before you post. :p So, I'll be changing it to "other", since I'm betting that the movie-makers have the Seven Lords cause it when they argue at Aslan's Table. I kind of like that theory (as for what will be in the movie). So, yeah.

^The whole reason the lords set out was to try and stop the darkness. We also now know for sure that the WW is just a dream. So I still say Dark Island just exists on its own.

I think we're meant to believe that the Dark Island has always just sort of been there, but is now suddenly growing stronger.

The original source was the same as of all other things- the Emperor.

However, whoever inhabited it made wrong choices by not overcoming their weaker sides. And thus it turned into a dark place because of too many beings doing nasty things and not enough goodness to counteract.

I think that in the books you could assume that when jadis came, so did the island, but when/if they film SC, they'll make it a creation of the LotGK
