[Closed] What the Filmmakers should know about The Silver Chair

I don't remember if anyone has mentioned this, but a good character development detail is Jill & Eustace quarreling. We see a fair amount of bickering during the journey, but before they free Rilian, they apologize, and by the end, we hear that they are always good friends. I would think their change in attitude toward one another would help propel the story. Also, they could show the childrens' change in attitude toward Puddleglum. At the beginning they think he's a "wet blanket," and I can see them looking at each other and rolling their eyes at some of his comments in the beginning (just not too much, please!). When they get underground, it would be really neat to show how much of a comfort he becomes to them, and to complete the development by showing them seeing him as a hero and loving him for the same kind of pessimism they found annoying at the beginning. Couldn't that be enough character development that they wouldn't have to add extra "character arcs" that aren't related to the book?

And on another note, I want to see lots of wide open landscapes and moors. I love the feel of their journey through all that empty land.

They might not want to add this in the film because they think the audience would think it was too repetitive. But I still hope there are several parts in the movie on their way to Harfang that they argue and are disgruntled.

..... I wouldn't mind if they modified this part- but I think it's important to show Aslan helping/rescueing them.

You are right, I didn't consider that aspect. It is good to show Aslan helping them. :)

^ Yes, your right about sin AslanIsOnTheMove, :) . Christ came to set us free and he came to set us free from a prison we accepted.

I see your comparison to the Christian idea of sin. I think it might be more respectful to not imply that those who are not of the same faith as you are people who "accept a prison." After all, it would not be fair for them to say the reverse and imply that you are doing that.

PeterCharn, I'm not sure that you understand "the Christian idea of sin". First of all every human being since Adam is born with a sin nature, a "want to" to do wrong. Jesus, God in human flesh, lived a sinless life, died in our place for our sins, was buried, and came back to life so that we could be saved from the punishment of our sins. When a person trusts in Jesus for salvation, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside them to help them say no to sin. However, a Christian can still "accept a prison" and get in bondage to sin again and live a defeated life though without losing their salvation. So this is a good theme for all of us to consider.

To get back on topic, I agree with you all and would like to add this - I'm wanting to see the confrontation with the Underlanders and the Narnian group after the LotGK is destroyed and discover that this is not their world and that they themselves have been enchanted. I really missed that in the BBC production.

Yes, the BBC film didn't really do that bit well. Although when I watched it again the gnomes are shown jumping down delightedly into the furnace there is nothing about Rilian being tempted to explore the deepest reaches of the world just as his father went to the uttermost East. It shows that Rilian, himself, is a flawed person, who has only just begun to grasp the enormity of his imprisonment, and how it has ruined his father's life.

It is the worthy Puddleglum who reminds him of this when he suggests that Rilian would prefer to see his father once again to going on a voyage.

I remember watching the BBC version as a young child and the scene where Prince Rilian was being tortured in the silver chair terrified and excited me. I watched it again, several years ago, and I was disappointed to find that scene incredibly tame and rather cheesy. The wonders of a child's imagination, eh? Imagination, don't leave me!

One thing the film will need to do is cut down the interactions with the creatures (i don't know what they are called) that the Lady of the Green Kirtle was using as slaves. Puddleglum's confrontation with the Lady is the climax of the movie and we can't spend 15 minutes after that scene wasting time learning about the gnomes and bism. Sure, they should let it be known to the audience that the gnomes werent really evil, just enchanted, but they shouldnt focus too much on that because afterwords we have to go to to Narnia, say goodbye to puddleglum, watch Caspian die, watch Caspian come back to life, and watch the kids go back to our world. If they don't condense these things, the ending of the silver chair could be 40 minutes long!

Since I like all of the stuff in Aslan's country and find them more important to the themes of the book and the series overall, I say cut out the whole Bism debate and get our heroes out of Underland as quickly as possible.

I agree and I disagree. I don't think the whole Bism debate should be at the end of the movie, but I also don't think it should be cut out. It wouldn't go amiss to introduce elements of the creatures and Bism throughout their time underground. Similar to how a writer may spread out their description of a character, backstory etc. across the whole story, or part of it, to avoid infodumping.

What if they turned it around and had one of the creatures from Bism go with them to Narnia? We could call him the MLC (Mysterious Little Creature). They would have to come up with some tear-jerking story about why the MLC would want to go with them to the upperworld but I'm sure they could come up with something. 8-| *Dodges the rotten tomatoes*

Another thing I desperate hope they do not do with The Silver Chair is to unnecessarily connect the plot to VDT or TLB. I'm worried by the recent Apted quote in which he mentions the "link" to Silver Chair, which ends up being, of all things, the slaves that Gumpus is sending into the Green Mist where they are gobbled up and magically transported underground at Ettinsmoor, and nevermind about the gnomes as a distinct race that lives at the planet's core near the central fires.

That, at least, is the implication of Apted's quote and of the leaked script.

I expect that you are now aware that we have been told that the SC link was in the idea of kidnapping. Slavery as well, possibly, though that is a theme of all the books, one way or another.

Clive Staples Sibelius, I don't want to see that either. I don't reall see why there needs to be a connection with VDT and SC. There is no plot hole, its just that time has passed by. That can be connected with Rilian and Caspian.

My main concern is...

DO NOT GET RID OF WILL POULTER!!

I haven't seen him act yet, but others say he has nailed it and it would be HORRIBLE to have them change actors! Even worse than if Will Poulter is only so-so or even slightly bad at acting (which I highly doubt)! They should still keep him!!

I second this!!!! I'd third and fourth it to if I could! We should start a petition if anything else comes of this. Please, for the sake of Narnia, do not recast Eustace!!!

And I'd fifth and sixth it as well. :) Also, please don't get rid of Ben Barnes as King Caspian. One strength of the Caspian trilogy so far is that it is the same guy who plays Caspian in all the movies so far. It isn't necessary to get anyone else, especially in view of the ending of Silver Chair.

Especially cause he’d only have to be in heavy makeup (to make him look old) for one second as he boards his ship. Then he should return when he is young again. After all, how are we supposed to be happy to see Caspian again if it’s not OUR Caspian?? X(
