[Closed] What movie will the VDT trailer appear in front of?

I can't see it aimed so young that it'd be a good fit for Toy Story 3.

I think you are underestimating Toy Story's demographic appeal. Toy Story has been around for 15 years, so yes, it will appeal to the 8 year olds, but there will be many people in their 20's who will want to see it because it is a movie they grew up with. And of course people who are 30+ will have kids who will want to see it. So that covers just about everybody. :)

I think Toy Story is much more of a family film than strictly a kids film. I think Toy Story and Voyage of the Dawn Treader have very similar demographics.

By that argument, they could put the trailer for Nightmare on Elm Street in front of Toy Story 3 because half of the people watching it are old enough to be able to watch both... but as you and I both know, it wouldn't be appropriate for the small kids in the audience.

My point for having a VDT trailer in front of Toy Story 3 is the same. If I had small kids, I wouldn't let them watch Prince Caspian til they were a good deal older... probably 10 or 11. And as I said in my previous post, because of Prince Caspian, I can't help but feel VDT will be marketed to the same age group. But I may very well be wrong, they may be toning the movie far back so it would be appropriate for Toy Story 3.

I think it was a mistake for Disney to focus on the age group they chose for Prince Caspian. They were far more successful with LWW when they marketed it toward families. I think they will go back to that. Targeting the Twilight heart-throb crowd again would = fail in my opinion.

Since Tirian's thread has been taken over by discussion on which movie the first VDT trailer (or teaser) will appear in front of, I thought I'd start a thread on it....

Big spring/summer movies are as follows....

May
Iron Man 2
Robin Hood
Shrek Forever After
Prince of Persia

June
Marmaduke (Fox)
The A-Team (Fox)
Toy Story 3
Twilight: Eclipse

July
The Last Airbender
Knight and Day (Fox)
Predators (Fox)
Despicable Me
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Ramona and Beezus (Fox/Walden)

Assuming Fox/Walden follow the LWW marketing plan, then we'll likely see the teaser in front of Iron Man 2 or one of the other big May releases. I think it would be stupid not to get a trailer in front of these movies. PC came out two years ago and people will need to be reminded that the franchise is alive and well.

But so far, Fox/Walden have taken a different approach to VDT. Last year, they clamped down on leaks of concept art, and the only "official" images show us less than what people could see when they visited the Dawn Treader set in Australia. No video yet, either. We've had three reports from invited guests to the early footage screening, but they didn't reveal much that we didn't already know. And these Facebook blog entries are anti-climactic (then again, so were the PC production blogs).

I guess this tells me Fox/Walden are trying to be more "tight" with marketing, and just might be waiting until summer to crank up promotion.

I think they trailers they put infront of certain movies should be made to appeal to the certain crowd.

For Toy Story and Shrek they should show the more lighthearted moments of the movie, and some of the humor (though don't make it so cheesy). This is where they advertise the "magical" and "adventerous" element of the movie. Show more Aslan and Reepicheep in these kinds of trailers.

For movies like Prince of Persia and Iron Man 2 they should show a trailer that shows a lot of action (not at the price of neglecting the plot though like they did with PC trailers). They should show the sea serpant, the Lone Island battle (we all KNOW there will be one), the dragon, the Dark Island, and the storm.

For the Twilight crowd they should show a lot of the scenes between Caspian and Ramandu's daughter and edit some scenes to make it look like there is a love triangle involving Lucy (wihtout there being one in the actual film). Take the Lord of the Rings The Two Towers trailer for instance. They made it look like Aragorn was greatly torn between Arwen and Eowyn and that there was a lot of romantic drama, when in reality Aragorn and Arwen only had a few scenes together and he wasnt in love with Eowyn at all...she only had a hinted crush on him.

I'm not sure about the making the love triangle appear, Josh (think of the uproar among the fans-- it would actually hurt the box office), but overall I like your strategy. There's a lot of different audiences Narnia appeals to ('family film' can be a blanket term) and hopefully the marketers will make the most of it.

Yep, cut out the triangle and you've got a good idea, Josh.

Maybe your right about the triangle. Who knows, maybe the Twilightfans will be so tired from the Edward/Bella/Jacob situation that they may find a normal romance without all that drama relaxing.

Ok, I think it is a mistake to cast the VDT trailer as an action flick. We're all in movie CEO mindset here, and we need to start thinking like human beings again.

People who go to see Iron Man aren't necessarily only-action kinds of people. I would venture that the audience for Twilight is more or less the same as that for Iron Man: girls, and girls who take their boyfriends along. I DON'T think this holds true the other way around, necessarily. My point is that all movie-goers are more or less the same species. I don't think VDT has to become Iron Man On Water for the audience to take notice. What it does have to do is be true to itself. Human beings will like VDT for it being itself, as long as the movie itself is good.

Banish the thought of VDT turning into Transformers 3, or something of that nature. Lucy as Megatron? =)) .

I should also remind everyone that the Pixar movie audience is not only children and their parents. They've built up a good-sized adult following. Heck, most parents are dragging their KIDS so they [the parents] can see it!

Not even sure if I want to throw out a guess of what movie the trailer will be fixed to, on account of my bad track record when it comes to predicting things. :p Still, I hope the trailer appears in front of a movie I'll actually see in theaters, because I really want to see the trailer on a big screen. Out of those listed, I'll probably be seeing Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2. Out of those two, I think it's more likely to be on Toy Story 3.

I may be crazy, but the A-Team jumped out at me for some reason. Perhaps because it is from Fox and is starring Liam Neeson. I don't know what rating A-Team will have, but if it is PG then I think a VDT trailer is a possibility.

I don't think I'll be able to guess a specific movie, but the June releases seem like a high possibility. May seems to early (unfortunately) and July to late to start, although they'd be smart to continue advertising from June right up to release day.

I'm thinking it will be one of the June ones as well, but then they don't seem to be releasing too much info/pics/vids as they were with PC at this same stage. Toy Story 3 seems likely as that is aimed at families (with a few oldies probably going too ;) ) but then something big like Twilight would be good. Though I agree with Glenstorm who said they wouldn't want something like Twilight associated with Narnia. I also think Iron Man 2 would be good (though perhaps too early) because it seems to be a rather popular series attracting many people (didn't it top the box office for awhile?)

Those are my thoughts anyway. And Josh I agree with your ideas, though definitely not the triangle thing and to be honest I don't think they'd actually do that! Thank goodness! :D ;)

Just thought I'd mention that I find it interesting that Tron: Legacy has a sort of teaser trailer that's been out for a while now. (Maybe even two, though I'm not sure about that). And Tangled just came out with a 30 second teaser a couple days ago. I'm surprised to see promotion for the Holiday movies ramping up so soon. Should be a good year ago Comic-Con :D

This is to Josh, Lucy P. and the "many-trailers approach" people: Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see more than one VTD trailer during the blockbuster season. It'd be a mistake to release too much information about the movie too early. I think it's safe to say we'll have a teaser trailer on blockbuster season, a second trailer around thanksgiving and a super trailer about a week before the movie is released, just like they did with the other movies.

Toy Story 3 would actually be a good option. Animation and that franchise in particular has universal appeal. But I just don't think they'll miss the opportunity to advertise on the earlier films of the season, specially when Fox's own movies are no-namers for the most part. I think Prince of Persia, Robin Hood or Iron Man 2 would be too good of an opportunity to miss - and they come out earlier.

I don't think implying a love triangle would be good for the movie at all. Most Narnia fans consider VTD their favorite book in the series. Trying to pander to the Twilight crowd by making it seem like the movie's not a faithful adaptation of the book would be a huge mistake and could put most of the fans off. They already took that approach before with the Prince Caspian movie and Ben Barnes-centered TV spots on the Disney Channel - it was a disaster and didn't help the box office much. This is already a light-hearted fantasy movie. It should be enough to appeal to the teen girls in the audience, there's no need for the teen heartthrob thing.
