I really liked it. It helped to show the friendship between Caspian and Edmund and helped set the tone for the movie as a, pretty much, happy-go-lucky adventure. Though the rest of the movie didn't pan out quite as such. It would have been an awesome intro to the book's version of VDT.

What did you think of the scene that showed Edmund and Caspian sparring?
Did you think it was a good addition? Completely unneccesary? Totally awful?
A good addition. It was light and fun and the music was good for it as well. Nice to see these two characters interact in a friendly and fun way.

There is definitely no "a" in definite.
The Mind earns by doing; the Heart earns by trying.
I liked it. It was just some entertainment for audience to show how they really bond as kings.

Eustace, please explain why you think they should've been playing chess. That just strikes me as a bit silly. I enjoyed the sparring scene. It was fun and gave the movie a little breathing space, which is so desperately needed.
Actually I probably should have put that comment in the Eustace and Reep thread and not this one. Basically I meant I just would have liked a few fun-to-watch scenes (like Ed and Caspian sparring) because there was too little of Reep (in my opinion) and he was so adorable to watch. I just remembered the chess playing scenes from the book and how they came off as really cute to me. Those types of scenes do give the movie breathing space I agree.

This was definitely a great scene! I actually look foward to seeing this part whenever I watch the movie! and I don't mind that the scene was added in, even if it wasn't in the book.
What a fun and entertaining way to show great character development between Edmund and Caspian!
I also sensed a bit of foreshadowing, because I had read the book, of their real fight at Goldwater.
Oh I loved the sparring match! IT was really lighthearted and I've always loved watching sparring matches, ever since we saw Ed best Trumpkin in Prince Caspian. It was a great way to see the two Kings bonding, and also a way to show their friendship rather than tell it through words.

It did seem a bit random, but I liked it. I think it felt very Narnian.
But I agree that the chess scene would have been cute as well.

I thought it was a sweet addition! Yeah, I don't quite understand why they put it in, or if it had any real purpose, but I liked seeing Edmund and Caspian having a friendly fight on the ship. I also agree that a chess scene (especially maybe with Reep and Lucy) would've been neat too, but oh well...
It was good bonding, which the movie needed. And a good contrast to when they start fighting for real when they are both under the spell on Deathwater Island.

I loved it. It was a good bonding moment to flush out the characters, and develop the relationships. Maybe it wasn't super important to the plot, and I believe that the movie needed to be longer, but overall it really helped establish a good relationship between the main characters which made the ending more emotional.
I like that scene...it showed their friendship and a special bond between them. Also showing their skills as swordsmen....awesome!

I very, very much liked it. I must say it's actually one of my very favorite scenes in the whole film - it's light, fast, brings a smile to your face (or at least brought to mine), with a lively music and somehow funny when first Edmund and then Caspian duck each other's swings in that fast, agile and rather amusing way. It highlights their friendship, and adds that adventurous, swashbuckling spirit to the film which VoDT ought to have, being a sea story
A film isn't made just out of scenes important or vital to the plot/story. There are scenes that are equally needed, and they serve to set the mood, breathe the right feeling and show us the characters, and to me this was the perfect exaple!
Not to mention this was a great show of swordfight skills, which I always love!
So for me the scene was absolutely
I've seen the movie 9 times!!! (PC)
I've seen the movie 7 times!!! (VoDT) And loved it!

I liked the addition, as someone else said, it showed ship life, providing both exercise and practice for the principles, as well as entertainment for those watching. It also showed their friendship and skill as swordsmen, etc. (And that Edmund had grown stronger since PC and still had his skills.)
Happy New Year!

I loved the duel scene! It was a brilliant portrayal of their freindship and their skill. Did anyone notice that Ed tried to use the same move on Caspian that he did on Trumpkin in PC?
