[Closed] What are the best VDT Locations to visit?

I'm going to make the long trek from South Australia to southern Queensland and whilst up there I'd love to check out some of the VDT locations. I was just wondering if anyone knew which ones would be worth visiting? I don't think I'll bother with the studio locations or where the VDT was stationed (since they're well and truly packed up now). Any knowledgeable people? Thanks guys!

Well the biggest chunk of the filming was done at Cleveland Point... yes it is all gone now, but it is an absolutely beautiful spot, surrounded by water, with a lovely restaurant/kiosk aswell... whilst there is nothing left from the filming to actually see, (I have heard there has been a plaque put there since i was there last!) you will see some islands and sand dunes from the shore that are actually seen in the film, so it could be worth the drive for a photo opp! or just a really nice lunch! :D however the other biggest shooting location was Warner Bros. Movieworld, but the studio tour for that has finished now,,, but I can tell you that if you go there and ride a rollercoaster called "Lethal Weapon" you can actually see the Purpose built water tank, and a few man made cliffs and trees on your long journey to the top of the ride... you just gotta look straight ahead in amongst the studios, and in the studio carpark... I was there just the other day, and all the props/sets are still there! I also know they did a little filming further up notrh... Whitt sundays area, but im not too sure of those locations... and the only other place I can think of is a local Gold Coast school that was used for the scene where Edmund wants to sign up for service, and Lucy is seen loading groceries onto her bike... Ill try track down the school name for you! its really cool to get some pics there :)

In the grand scheme MOVIES ARE NOT IMPORTANT, people are important, Love one another and treat eachother how we would like to be treated ourselves!

You should check out the VDT Locations Map that Ceppault made in GoogleMaps if you haven't done so already:

Probably as comprehensive a source on reported locations for the movie as you can find - or ask Ceppault in person, he knows everything when it comes to Narnia locations ;)

Thanks Icarus! I've seen Ceppault's map before. I hope the locations are reasonably easy to locate once one arrives there.

Love Narnia, thanks for the advice mate. I've been to Movie World before but I didn't have the guts to ride the Lethal Weapon. I don't think that's going to change this time 'round. Sounds good though. I'm travelling by car and staying along the NSW/Queensland border, so I don't want to travel more than I need too (especially since I'm going with my family and everyone wants to see different things).

The quarry at Stapylton (I'm guessing Goldwater Island?) may be worth a look. Mt Tambourine would probably be very nice too - not sure what was filmed there though (is it open to the public?). If nothing else, I'm sure South Stradbroke Island would be the place to visit. That's where the entry to Aslan's Country scene was shot, correct? (By the way, how do you visit the island? By boat? Swim?)
Thanks again!

If I were you, W4J, I'd be checking out the NRMA and your local SA road service organisation which may help with advice. The NRMA is mostly centred in NSW but they have plenty of offices and can be quite helpful with accommodation directories and road guides. According to this site ferry services run to South Stradbroke Island from Runaway Bay marina, 20 minutes drive north of Surfer's Paradise. The ferry will take you around the beaches and you can get accommodation on the island, there being a resort there. I think that some of the filming was also done near Tangalooma where I know there is a timeshare resort.

The Lethal Weapon might be er a little too lethal to oldies like us, and there is also the matter of getting home again to consider. So I had to give it a miss. But we did enjoy being taken around the Dawn Treader last January. Unfortunately they didn't let us see into other sets etc. Going to MovieWorld is quite expensive, unless you plan to spend the whole day there, and you get better value for money if you can team it up with entry to one of the other attractions nearby, such as Sea World, or something wilder. I would have loved to see Cleveland Point, but we also were visiting family and friends, and I only had a few days off work.

It is best to plan your journey first, decide exactly what you are going to do and where you are going, so that you can also plan your accommodation. We stopped in this fantastic beachside skyscraper apartment at Main Beach, with really terrific views of the ocean and of Surfers. But you have to cater for yourself with frozen dinners etc, bought nearby at a small supermarket. This was the last place we could find to stay for one night which cost us nearly $300 just for that night. I'm sure there were cheaper places to stay, nice as it was.

We've been to Mackay, Airlie Beach and Proserpine, which is near the Whitsunday Passage. It is quite a long trip from the Gold Coast up the Bruce Highway by car, so we flew on that occasion and used a hire car to get around. Otherwise we would have spent three or more days just getting there from Sydney.

Eustace, I've been to Queensland before and visited both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Yes, the Gold Coast is better-known but I think the Sunshine Coast is more beautiful, a little less touristy and more genuine.

Wagga, thanks for the link. I doubt we'd stay on the island. I was just thinking of visiting it for several hours and taking some photos. Thanks!

... ask Ceppault in person, he knows everything when it comes to Narnia locations ;)

Nothing makes up for local knowledge. Would have never picked out Kings College Gatehouse myself.

Of all outstanding features that remain from the filming, the concrete pad that supported the Dawn Treader set and gimbal is still there. (click here).

Doug Jennings Park (click here) is also publicly accessible. I don't know the precise location of where the set was placed. Local knowledge makes a difference.

Speaking of local knowledge ... thank you for the additional information, waggawerewolf27. :) You are by far more familiar with the area. Likewise, LoveNarniaLiveforGod.

Admin for Tony Nixon - Official on Facebook may be able to provide a few other specifics too ( ).

I suspect the quarry is restricted access, as also The Southport School. The Mt Tamborine site (if actually used) is private property.

Hard to say how many of the locations were filmed by 2nd Unit.

“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

Thanks for the additional information, Ceppault. I contacted Tony Nixon and both he and his admin replied (because of your efforts we know the majority of them).

Narrowhaven Wharf set
- Broadwater Spit, Gold Coast (now gone)
Slave Market set - built on Warner Bros. Movie World backlot (now gone)
Large water tank - same vicinity
Concrete plinth where Dawn Treader stood on gimble - Cleveland Point Park
Dufflepuds - Sound Stage 8, Warner Bros. Movie World
Lone Island town square - built on Warner Bros. studio backlot (now gone)
Dawn Treader ship - Sound Stage 5, Warner Bros. Movie World.
Goldwater Island - Stapylton, quarry (public - no)
Southport Private School - used early scenes in England (public - no)
The End of the World - South Stradbroke Island beaches

All of these locations are in or around Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Thanks to Tony Nixon for this information. He wished to acknowledge that he does not know all of the filming locations, as he wasn't present at them all.

I've printed off Ceppault's VDT locations map.
Here is my list:
Priority visits - Cleveland Point Park and South Stradbroke Island beaches
Possible visits - Doug Jennings Park, Broadwater Spit and Jacobs Well
Warner Bros Movieworld - if visiting, look for anything VDT-related
Private - Stapylton and Southport Private School (not open to the public)

Does anyone know what Jacobs Well was used for? It seems to be a fairly green place. Thanks
