The loss of the dark island is the least important to the plot. There isn't a lot of character development there. The only thing is that is where they find one of the lords and they can always find him somewhere else.

I totally disagree. The Dark Island is totally unique from all the others. I also think it is very important because they do find Lord Rhoop. And I think it is visually going to be unique and interesting as to how the crew reacts to the sounds and what their imaginations are producing. It may not be "character development" but more like "character revelation".

There may be few people who don't care about the Dark Island, but I would be willing to bet that it is important to most VTD/Narnia fans. :| Thanks for reading my opinion. B-)

A moment please. I would like to say that in my theory I don't exclude The Dark Island or the events thereof nor do I combine Deathwater with Dragon Island. I don't like the Deathwater/Dragon Island combo either. Personally, as I have said, the Burnt Island/Deathwater combo seems to be the best combination. Even then, I propose that the two Islands become a group of two Islands, thus making them a single location, but still two Islands. Just wondering if anyone got that or not?

The dark island is unique and i think for that reason it will not be the one to be cut, but in my opinion, it is the least interesting island with the least amount of character development on it. I also think while the dark island may seem interesting when reading it that once it is visual it will be far less creepy.

I'm not all that convinced that they didn't combine The Lone Islands with Dragon Isle. Think about it. MLG was on the ship for both scenes if we judge rightly from the set videos. The most likely place to drop MLG from the story would be on the lone islands, but since we saw her in Eustace's fly-by scene we assumed that she stayed on the ship after the lone islands. But if Dragon Isle was renamed as one of the lone islands this would solve the mystery. Remember, it is a well known Narnian legend that the Lone Islands had been liberated from a dragon at one point in the past. So the Lone Islands already have that dragon connection. That could also be considered "borrowing from other books" since that story was first mentioned in The Last Battle.

Just something to think about.

Uhhhhhhh... ummmmmm... uhhhhh... no. In the first place, the Lone Islands have enough happening on them as it is. It would be impractical for the filmmakers to try and cram events like that. Not only would the events be really crammed, but it would make what happened on the other Islands imbalanced as to what would happen on a Lone Island/Deathwater combo. Such an imbalance would make what happened on the other Islands seem less important. Also, such an imbalance wouldn't make a good flow for the the movie: it would be topsy turvy. No, practically, that just wouldn't work.

So, I know that in the news item they said that everything points to 7 Lords, even though it says 5 in WORLD magazine. Maybe they (WORLD) got 5 (supposed) Lords confused with 5 Islands?

That's what I was wondering too redeemedqueen. :) And by the way, World Magazine issued a statement that it was indeed a typo.

I can see burnt Island leavingm but as for the other...

I know this doesn't work with the math, :-s but I wish that the island they cut is Felimath and just had Caspian and co. captured on Doorn.

At least we still have 7 Lords, apparently. But we only have 5 islands.....I wonder how that's going to work? I hope they at least keep Deathwater Island, Dragon Island, and the Dark Island.

I hope this isn't a foreshadowing of major changes to come. VDT is one of my favorite books! I'm not a purist and minor changes don't bug me, but big deviations and additions do. Ugh. I guess we'll see!

There are many suggestions on how they combined seven islands into five. I will go with the one I think they did and then tell you what I think.
I think they combined:
Dragon Island/Deathwater
Burnt Island/Island of the Duffers
I think this most likely because there was a pool on Dragon Island just a different pool and Burnt Island they just pick up a coracle and leave. The Island of the Duffers is where invisible people live and they could easily just give the Narnians a coracle to keep. What I think of combining Seven Islands into five is although I don't like them doing that it's better than cutting out any of the Islands out altogether.

I don't mean to be a dark and stormy raincloud here, but I do want to say that the word the production used was "consolidated". That could be interpreted to either cut or combined. We don't know yet. Hopefully it's combined (in a good way) but I wanted to mention this again in case they did mean cut.

I was hoping that all the islands would be in it but oh well no use getting upset over it.

Well as much as I would love to see all the islands, I can understand consolidating Burnt Island with say Dragon Island. What happens to Eustace is to important not to show, so you need Dragon Island, IMO. Burnt island can be added to this as it seems to me the main plot point is to get the small boat for Reepicheep. Dark Island can be done as simply as having them be over come by an incredibly thick fog, picking up the Narnian Lord and leaving. No stopping at all.

The other islands have some, what I think are very important actions and harator developments and I hope they will be in the movie.

My 2 cents.

I've never really considered Dark Island an Island anyway, so converting it into a darkness wouldn't bother me.

So Lord Rhoop just hangs out swimming for a few decades then? ;))

Funnily enough, neither did I. And Rhoop certainly swam to the Dawn Treader. I don't see it so much as consolidating islands as cutting uneventful sailing time, where food is steadily getting short but nothing more happens.

There is another thing - the Voyagers don't actually find a missing lord on the Island of the Voices. Lucy comes along and makes the Voices visible. Maybe she makes that Darkness, and maybe Lord Rhoop, himself, visible as well, especially as both places are part of Lucy's spiritual journey. Does the whole ship's company have to find Lord Rhoop? Or just the main characters, whilst taking a walk somewhere?

Alternatively, Dark Island could be combined with Ramandu's Island, since the Darkness of nightmares must have quite a bit to do with finalising a seemingly never-ending journey. Once Dark Island disappears, Ramandu's Island appears.

I did go to the Narnia display which ends today (26/1/2010). One of the tour guides was talking to us about the display, asking if we have any questions. Mischievously, I asked if Eustace turns into a dragon in the film, but he wouldn't say. He said that was really top secret information. ;)

Well I believe Mr. Gresham already told us that Eustace turns into a dragon. It was mentioned in a story written by one of the people that had visited the Dawn Treader set.
