[Closed] VDT: The Sound Effects/Design/Mixing

I was trying to think of an area of VDT not yet discussed and recently had imagined the Dawn Treader sailing on the ocean and the water crashing against its hull. Then I realized all of the different sound effects that will have to be added or even created before adding. It wouldn't do to watch a silent version of VDT or just have the dialogue and music. :-o

Just think of only Dragon Eustace and his sounds: crawling, crying, trying to talk, flying (wings), and so on. Or the bustling sounds of Narrowhaven or will Lilliandil have a "twinkle" sound when she appears? And what of the Dufffers' thuds and the possible noises in Coriakin's house? B-)

I think the sound effects for VDT are going to be very important. I am curious as to what others think about this. Thank you for your comments. :)

I think there is a good opportunity to do some interesting things with the sound design/mixing when it comes to the Dufflepuds. They could for instance, in the period of the movie for which the dufflepuds are invisible, give their voices an ever so slightly hollow and echoey sound, to make them seem just not quite "there" so to speak. I wouldn't want it to be too overdone, as the Dufflepuds are afterall just invisible and not in another dimension or whatever, but doing something a little bit different with the voices might be quite interesting to hear, and could help convey that slightly odd creepy vibe that you get from those sequences in the book.

I also think there is great potential to do some clever things with the stereo surround sound in the cinema when it comes to the Dufflepuds. They could have the sounds of the voices and the thumps of their feet emanating sporadically from different speakers to give you the impression of perhaps being surround, but perhaps not totally surrounded. By not letting you get a grasp of just how many different dufflepuds there are, and not letting you quite work out if they are completely surrounding you or not, i think it could really lend itself well to helping put the audience right in the middle of the main characters mindset in those initial scenes.

or will Lilliandil have a "twinkle" sound when she appears?

Every time i see the shot of her appearing in the new trailer, all i can think of is the transporter sound effect from Star Trek ;) So any added sound effect which stops me thinking "Energize!" every time it happens will surely be a good thing :)

VDT as a silent movie! ;))

I read on the "Dawn Treader Score Complete" article that the next step is most likely mixing the sound. And then I started thinking about what a tricky job that must be! Having to make each sound just loud enough and no louder in relation to the others. I wouldn't want to be responsible for that. But it sure would be fun to think up background sounds for each scene!

Some questions we can't answer:
~ Will the sea serpent have a vocalization? Some sort of a croaking whistle is how I imagine it.
~ What will they use for the dufflepuds' hopping sound? They obviously can't record real dufflepud hops for this! I would love to see a special feature on this type of improvisation on the VDT DVD. :)

Does anyone know how much the director influences the mixing process? Obviously he has a say in how the above mentioned items will sound, but how about the music volume levels, and the background noise, etc.

I wondered about that. At least I know now that it wasn't really you. #:-s

VDT as a silent movie!

I saw a video once which showed the famous "I am your father" scene from Star Wars redone as a silent movie. It was kind of funny. I'd like to see some memorable scenes from tCoN redone like that too.

Seeking comic book artist, PM for details.

Icarus-- Mods have "edit" buttons available on everyone's posts, and it looks one of them accedently clicked "edit" instead of "quote" on yours! :p I'm sure that a mod in this section will be in contact with you about it soon. :)

Back on topic...Hm, the sounds I'm most looking forward to would be

The lack of sounds in the silver sea. I know, this was supposed to be about sounds, but when I think of that all I think of is "stillness".

I also am thinking of some definite creaks and groans happening as Lucy climbs the stairs to the magician's hallway, to give it a bit more of an "eerie" feeling.

For the sea serpant, I'd love a sort of...slick, wet, slimy noise :P If such a thing even exists.

Well, I think some parts playing out silently could work really well for VDT. When Lucy makes her way up to the Magician's room or the Dark Island for example, could really add to the eerie effect when played out in silence. Honestly, when you're not thinking about it, that's when the sound is at the most effective. I mean the list goes on and on for all the sounds for Narnia (oh, what fun for the foley team :) ), so it seems rather trivial to consider them all for a first viewing of VDT (later on, maybe).

... Dragon Eustace and his sounds: crawling, crying, trying to talk, flying (wings), and so on

I hope they resist the temptation to give DragonEustace any form of inner monologue or narration by Will Poulter to explain what the creature is thinking. It is perhaps the easy route, but i think that, as you say, they could be far more creative in allowing the various subtle noises of the dragon to convey those emotions in a much more interesting manner.

The Peter Jackson remake of King Kong would be the film that most springs to mind in that instance. Obviously Kong is completely incapable of speech, but at no point in that movie do you ever struggle to understand exactly what it is Kong is thinking - helped in part by the fantastic facial expressions of the CGI model, and the expressive body language of Andy Serkis' performance, but also due to the various grunts and groans that Kong emits being akin to a language of sorts. Again, think Wall-E as another good example of this. Hopefully they can come up with something similar for the Dragon sequences in VDT.

I really want to see the storm in VDT. I reread that part in the book last night and I thought to myself "It's gonna be really awesome to see how they pull that off and hear all the sounds." :D

Good of you to bring up Wall-E, icarus. Most of that great movie was without dialogue so the sounds were really important for conveying things. They almost have to do the same thing with Dragon Eustace.

VDT as a silent movie! ;))

If they released VDT without any sound whatsoever, the only good thing that would do would be to help this thread. ;) B-) :-o

There are lots of silent characters, specifically, I think, that are CGI. I think that the dragon's emotions could be very very easily conveyed if they are done properly.

I wonder how they will portray the sound of Aslan ripping of Dragon Eustace's skin. I'm sure that will be a really interesting sound effect!

I was listening yesterday to Steven Spielberg talk about sound in relation to his first professional movie for TV called Duel. That was the one about a mad truck driver chasing a salesman across California desert highways.

Anyway, he described sound as the glove that fits over the visual aspect of the movie. Very important for enhancing scenes and emotions.

Maybe I should do a poll on how many people want to see a silent version of VDT. :D I think sound would suddenly become more important to a lot of people. :-o

Sound and sight are two things I would DIE without! If I was deaf, I honestly think i'd go crazy!

I hope they keep Reep's little tune that they had in PC, I rather liked it. But I doubt they will I think the music in the third & fourth trailers was great, if that's any indication of what the film sountrack is going to be likre I'm all for it.
