I did this poll over a year ago on the old forum and was curious as to what people would think now...
After rereading The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I had some thoughts on Lucy and her journey to the Magic Book. This is one of those moments in the film when the audience should be rivited as Lucy walks from one end to the other of this long corridor. Those who have not read the story will know by then that this is Coriakin's(who is a magician) house and that anything might happen.
When reading this chapter(10), I always pictured the masks on the wall doing something after Lucy passes by and the corridor actually becoming or appearing longer at a certain point. The book doesn't explicitly say these things happen but it would be visually interesting for the film to show them.
It would be neat if Lucy were to come to the last door on the left and at that moment have the last mask she passes make a face and she turn suddenly around, sensing something happening. After looking at the mask(now perfectly still), she slowly turns around and the door on the left is now 30-40 feet farther away and other doors appear in between.
What do you think should happen in this scene? Thanks.

I like your idea GlimGlum!
It would definitely give you an idea of what Lucy is feeling, like she's being watched or followed.
It should defiantly be very still and quiet.
When Lucy looks down the long hall, maybe they could do a similar effect like they did in the Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo is looking down the road right before the Ringwraith came. I they definitely need to included the beard and the mirror.

Haha, my thoughts exactly! Had just spent ages looking through YouTube looking for a video of that shot, but to no luck.
But anyway, totally agree. I don't think they need to do anything overtly magical looking with CGI effects and such, but just some subtle work with the camera/zoom to imply a certain strangeness in the atmosphere would work quite well i think.
Agreed, icarus. I think that the audience should feel what Lucy is feeling in the scene- that the hallway is going on forever, and that the place feels extremely quiet and strange.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the filmmakers do this scene very much.

I love the idea of the masks and other things on the walls moving when Lucy isn't looking. It fits with the creepy feel of that whole walk down the hallway and restores some of the mood we lose by not being able to know what Lucy is thinking.
I went with other as my option is a variation of the first,
basically the exact opposit of #2.
Corridor lengthens BUT masks do not make faces after Lucy passes by
As a Narnia book Purist I voted for the first one. I think it should happen exactly like the book.
Agreed. Keep the movie to the book, especially with details like this one. I just hope that they keep the whole movie like the book. Keep it true!!

Aah, that's one I should have thought of for an option. I think that's the first time I've seen that suggestion. Original.
But I still prefer that the masks do something as well.

Ooooh...the corridor lengthening and the masks changing would be very mystical...I like it! I had never read the books that way, but like the thought. Just as long as the masks don't morph to something completely weird, that part should be fine. This idea kind of reminds me of some sort of ride that I've been on, can't remember the name of it, though.
i think the corridor should be really creepy and seem to move and warp when Lucy moves! the creepier, the better, I say!!!!!
there should be masks on the walls that seem to jump out at Lucy.....

I don't think that it should become much longer (if it does become longer at all) definitely not 30-40 feet. It needs to seem longer, like described in the "Across the Desert" chapter of HHB where it seems like Shasta is just never going to get the mountains and then, all of a sudden, there they are looming above him. The mountains didn't move in anyway, it was just Shasta's perspective, this is how they ought to play out the length of the corridor. The book does not say that the corridor grew it says that Lucy begins to think that it does.
Also, having the masks move may be a little cheesy and would remind me of Disney's Beauty and the Beast (suits of armor and Cogsworth's "Ahem...As you were.") If they are done right, just having them there should be enough to make your skin crawl.
I is Lava, how I got that name is a long story, but I is Lava
the corridor should get longer...that would be cool. And the masks without the changing faces and I want the bearded mirror too. I think that's enough, they can make it creepy with just that and the music they play.
I like your idea GlimGlum, though I voted on nothing except just making it creepy and the bearded mirror... If they do it right, they can make it creepy without "changing" anything.

True enough but I believe the following passage implies that it is possible:
Before she reached the last door on the left, Lucy was beginning to wonder whether the corridor had grown longer since she began her journey and whether this was part of the magic of the house.
For me the question is whether this is illusory in nature or an actual magical alteration of the house. Either way it appears that the house possesses magical qualities apart from Coriakin himself. I think it leaves the door open for this and the masks moving and other things happening.
After all, there is no question that the Magician's Book is magical; so why not the house as well?
