Just got this and there seems to be bits of the sides of the film missing from my memory of it in the theatres. I read Apted wanted it 16:9 on DVD versus the original aspect ratio it was filmed in (I forget exactly what that was). Anyway, I'm a bit disappointed if I'm missing bits of the sides.

They did change the aspect ratio for the dvd... so some frames lost, but others gained (take a look at the shadow scene again, and you'll notice I minor error regarding this )
Overall I don't mind the change, it seems like we gained just as much as we lost (and you have to admit the shadow thing is funny ) Plus I think it might actually play better on my computer because of this.

Well I did read the Aslan's Shadow thread and started this one only to talk about the aspect ratio. I'll look at the whole movie again....it just seemed that his
paws were supposed to come from the right after his shadow...
Also in the painting scene I didn't really like that they cropped it. It doesn't show in all of the scenes, just some.

I'm sorry but could you elaborate on this? I'm not sure what you mean... cause as long as they are firmly planted on the ground the shadow and the paw shuld meet, but I think I'm misunderstanding you here...

@Wolf I mean I thought I remembered seeing bits of his paws off to the right after seeing the shadow of them....(I could be wrong).
Guess I'll have to watch it again!

Oh. Yes we will have to look again won't we... I'll keep my eye out too and if I see anything I'll take a screenshot (now that my PB is back ) I don't think they were there though, because as I said his paws and shadow should meet, since he was walking, but they didn't so either his paws aren't there at all, or they are in the wrong spot.

I honestly have not seen anything 'missing' in the shots in the movie due to the aspect ratio being different. but then again, I don't have a flatscreen TV so that might have something to do with it!
it looks the way I remember it looking in the theater!

My understanding is that it's taller but the same width (I saw that in an article somewhere). And Aslan is invisible where you see his shadow.

For those who don't know about the aspect ratio situation in the film industry...
Movies to be shown in a theater are traditionally filmed in this ratio:
However, this created a problem when movies needed to be shown on television, since virtually all TV sets were created with this aspect ratio:
The following ratio was chosen as a compromise because it is almost exactly directly in between the previous two ratios...
16:9 is also now the standard ratio for high definition TVs and IMAX theaters.
This means that most filmmakers shoot their movies in 16:9, but have to be careful to have all the important bits of the shots be contained inside a smaller square so that the image can be properly cropped for 4:3 and 2.39:1. However, the incredibly annoying thing for me has been that DVDs have either sold movies as "fullscreen" (4:3) or "widescreen", (21) without selling movies with TRUE fullscreen (16:9) that give you the entire picture.
To give an example: Here is a picture originally shot in 16:9.
Here is the same image cropped for 4:3.
So I am very relieved to know that VDT is being sold with the full picture and not some cheap cropped version.
Thanks very much for the explanation MinotaurforAslan!
I had the impression (while watching in theater) that Mr. Apted (or whomever is responsible for this aspect) didn't do the greatest job on keeping the important bits in the smaller ratio box. Did anyone else get the feeling that characters were almost dangling off the theater screen edges? I noticed it particularly in the scene with Reepicheep's song.

Adeona, No... the only two times I even noticed it really were at the beginning when Ed and Lu are looking at the painting and the sides were cut of a little, and at the end with the mysteriously unattached shadow

We've definitely been given more than what was originally seen in theaters, and yes, the shot of Aslan's shadow is a fantastic example of this!
