[Closed] Total Film Article and Behind the Scenes Photos

Another day, another magazine article (this time Total Film #175). Again quite lengthy, and again i haven't had time yet to actually read it, bar a few sections which caught my eye as i skimmed through, a couple in particular i will quote below. The thing that stood out the most though was the inclusion of some interesting Behind the Scenes photos, which made me think about how little Behind The Scenes stuff we have actually had on this movie (the production blog started promisingly, but then kind of died out) and of course low and behold, as soon as i get home there is a new Behind the Scenes video up - makes me wonder if its a coincidence or not, or that they have deliberately held of on the Behind the Scenes material till today. Anyway.

The photos of the article:

Pages 1 and 2:

Pages 3 and 4:

And some close-ups on the text so you can read it:

Part 4:

And some close-up shots of the photos in the article:

And a few of the quotes that caught my eye:

Apted on the changes to the plot:

"I don't feel too bad about it," says Apted. "We did an honourable draft of the book but it had no life to it."

At least they did an honourable draft, right? Still, generally quite disheartening to think they had it and then threw it away.

Mark Johnson on 3D Conversion

"This is not one of those rush jobs - we've had a decent amount of time to get it right. But i'd also be lying if i said we were done and i knew exactly how i felt about it yet..."

Not entirely sure what he meant in the second part... i get the sense he is perhaps suggesting it wasn't entirely his preference to have gone the 3D route? Not sure.

Total Film on Apted Returning for Silver Chair:

Even if Dawn Treader does become a success story, Apted doesn't expect he'll be returning to Narnia either.

Which seems somewhat contrary to what the writers of yesterdays article in SciFiNow Magazine said about Apted being "pencilled in" for the next film already.

I'm a filmmaking student and I've done several long and short films, written many scripts (including an adaptation), and read lots of screenwriting theory books.

Back when production started on VDT, I re-read the book, hoping to kind of second-guess the filmmakers and figure out the adaptation. I came away from the book wondering how they were going to stay true to it while having a compelling film. It's really not there as-is.

Apted is a veteran filmmaker. He knows what makes a good script. And he had Douglas Gresham fighting for staying ultra-true to the book. The changes made were likely necessary. I'll wait to pass final judgement until December 10th, but for now, I'm going to give the production the benefit of the doubt.

Wow, that's a lot of information to digest.... Although a lot of it is background info about the lack of success with PC...

What is the re-tread part at the bottom? Is it like a summary of Apted's films or something?

Its just a brief feature on some other movie franchises which have experienced similar turbulent times to those which VDT went through, namely James Bond, Superman, and (bizarrely) Scary Movie.

Yeah this was in the back of my mind for this movie too how were they gonna stick to it and keep it interesting, unfortunately it is for SC and LB as well but for different reasons, I think HHB will be good though...MN depends.

On the bright side, its not the leaked script, and and rather have an almost faithful good draft than a faithful bad one.

Not to get off-topic, but in my personal opinion, SC, LB, HHB, and MN are all pretty straightforward to adapt, as was LWW. PC and VDT are the tough ones. It can only get better from here! :)

Well the problem with LB and SC is that they're really dark, SC is the darkest in the series in my opinion... I'm just afraid that they'll try to "fix" that and only end up worse off, since lots of people blame PC for being too dark and "not magical enough" (which I disagree with by the way)

So yeah the article was interesting, but frankly I think it's just time to see the film :P

Wolfloversk, that is a big concern of mine. I wouldn't say The Silver Chair is dark per se, just kind of... grey. It's kind of hard to explain. But especially with The Last Battle, that book is much darker than Prince Caspian (book) so I really hope the film-makers will have the guts to make that film with the book's integrity intact. All this "Return to Hope" stuff would make The Last Battle really silly.

And how interesting about Michael Apted not expecting to return fot The Silver Chair. Hmm...

Ok I made a new thread about LB and SC here cause we're a bit off topic Ooops

The other thing that stuck out to me was that part about Apted not intending to comeback...now we have conflicting SC news too 8-}

Although you are much more educated in the area of film making than I am, I feel as if we share the same viewpoint. You summarized exactly what I was thinking. When I read a book, story, or just think of my dreams I often think of how I would adapt them to film. I realize more and more that what works in one medium of communication does NOT necessarily work in another. I am def open to changes in films. I trust Walden Media.

I am a bit sad that Apted isn't expected to return for SC.
