I also think green smoke in the "there never was such a world" scene would make a lot of sense. But I would want it to be transparent, and maybe a darker shade of green, and permeating the room, not thick, misty tendrils darting about like in VDT.

Smells are much harder to convey than visuals

For this reason, they may need to consider throwing the whole smell idea out for the adaptation. Unless they can find a way to make it work without it being really cheesy. Works great on the page, but might not be as effective on the screen.

It is only important to convey that the LotGK is affecting them somehow. I don't think it really matters how.

I really do not want Apted to do SC. Sure the green mist (smoke!) might be better explained but that's just a small part of the story.

First off, he's not very good at fantasy. He's good at documentaries and historical films but not this genre. He also doesn't like fantasy at all! Secondly, he doesn't have a passion or love of the books. I'm not saying that Adamson should do all the films, just that we need a director and writers who care, love, and understand the books.

I'm with Puddlecheep on pretty much everything he just said.

Now there's a thought. In SC she puts green dust in the fire. What if the fire continues to burn green, and create eerie, hypnotic patterns of light in the room. It would be the light rather than the smell that entrances them. My fellow SG-1 geeks, if any are reading this thread, might call to mind the episode where the team discovers the goa'uld light den. I wouldn't want the scene with LGK to be exactly like that, but using a similar concept of hypnotic light. @-)

Well everyone... I am mist-ifed as to why you are all green-around the gills about this bit of CGI.... 8-}

CGI being improved bit by bit as films are released and if the director whoever it may be for Silver Chair, which will be made into a film even if I have to make it myself starring as every character 8-| , will not make the same mistake again...

One of my greatest failings is that I still haven't seen VotDT... but from the pictures I have seen and judging by the way you all are distressed by the mere mention of this dreaded subject I can tell that it effected your whole viewing of the film... :-s

But can we please discuss something else? ;;)

It's kind of hard not to discuss SC without looking back at VDT. You have to look back at the former movie to figure out what did work, and what didn't, so you'll have ideas for the next film. ;)

CGI isn't overly needed in SC. But for the real, actual part of the book GM, they need to do it better, but not the same as the VDT GM ( :| ). I like your ideas, gP and Anhun, with no smell factor but a hypnotic-like fire. My only fear is that they will tie in the SC GM with the VDT GM. That would be distasterous and extremely bad. /:)

I agree about everything you said, PuddleCheep. We can't expect Andrew Adamson to do all the remaining movies, but we can hope new, Narnia book-loving writers and a director can come in for Narnia 4, and bring the back the heart of the books. :)

I agree with you Shastafan (I also am a fan of Shasta)

I will have to see the movie!!!!!

I liked how they did the first book and embroider the story, rather than added complete sections to it

Jill_Pole, I think they could take exactly that approach with SC and come out with a fantastic movie that many movie-goers will enjoy. In my opinion, it's a very cinematic story. Now whether or not people will show up, depends on the marketing . . .

I'm being more won over to them recasting Will purposefully (in keeping with following original age and behaviours of Eustace in the book) to get a reboot to the whole second half of making the rest of the books. Also agree with Jill_Pole and Anhun about them mainly leaving the original SC story alone and just only adding or "embroidering" (nice term) to enhance the existing strong story. But please....greenlight something already and find some new good people to do it. Maybe reset everything and make SC as if it were the first time they were ever making a Narnia movie.

I really like the idea of the green fire and the hypnotic light from it. I think it would be neat if after Puddleglum stomps on the fire it flares up golden for a minute and shows Alsan's head. Also, it isn't strictly in the book, I do like how the BBC had LotG using her fingers to put green smoke near them as she was enchanting them. I'm not sure if that will work, since it is similar to the green mist. At least it would be fitting in this case. They should definitely keep the stringed instrument and the hypnotic strumming. Puddleglum's speech HAS to be in this scene.

Anhun: thank you :) i agree, it has the most room for story telling during the journey to the ruined city

Stateofgreen: Thank you also :) I think they should make SC more like LWW, more raw and to the point

Pattertwigs Pal: they cannot cut his SPEEEEECH!!!!!!!! :((

Here's a video of the BBC take on this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi8O9tzWGv4&feature=related

They changed things around and left out the musical instrument. But they did a good job with the Witch using the smell of the green powder to hypnotize Jill and Eustace.

The snake is horrendous though.

I know some fans had problems with the inclusion of Tilda Swinton in cameo roles in Caspian and Dawn Treader, but I personally liked the fact that the filmmakers were able to continue to use her, and would personally like to see that trend continue, particularly since there's an opening for the Lady of the Green Kirtle to be interpreted as a reincarnated version of Jadis, which would allow for the filmmakers to bring Swinton back in a full-fledged role and play off the thematic device they'd seeded through Caspian and Dawn Treader by using her in a cameo role in those films.

I liked the actor they cast as Eustace in Dawn Treader, which is why the initial reports that they were considering developing The Magician's Nephew as the next film had me somewhat disappointed, because I absolutely hate it when films have to recast a main character due to contract or age/appearance issues. Hopefully this won't happen, regardless of when Silver Chair gets filmed.

...particularly since there's an opening for the Lady of the Green Kirtle to be interpreted as a reincarnated version of Jadis,...

No, thank you. She's of the same ilk as Jadis, but she's not Jadis reincarnated or not. She dies at the end of LWW, some try to summon her spirit in PC (and don't succeed - thank God). Reincarnation has no place in Narnia.
