(Quoting isn't working for me… This comes from FriendofNarnia2's post.)
Just look at The Tourist. It is doing pretty poorly at the box office right now, and it has two big names in it. (One of them is Depp, btw)
Johnny Depp movies that don't involve him in heavy makeup tend to flop.
Until I'd read some post here on NarniaWeb suggesting Depp as Puddleglum, I hadn't thought about it. I was against it, until I finally saw POTC two months ago. Then I reread The Silver Chair, kind of looking to see if it was there at all, and yeah, I can see it.
My dream production:
Director: Michael Apted. He did a great job with VDT, given what he had to work with. Some of his other films are fantastic, so I think he deserves another shot if he has better material. Which brings me to…
Screenwriter: NOT Markus and McFeely. Steven Knight would be good, if he can do an epic quest movie as well as he does political drama. And Douglas Gresham! (I'm tempted to say Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, but they really are better are straight, improbable action, which is not what Narnia needs.)
Rating: PG
Budget: $120 million
Release: December 7, 2012
.... .... ...
Johnny Depp plays silly people in movies. Puddleglum is not silly. Therefore, Johnny Depp should not play Puddleglum.
Puddleglum has a "long thin face with rather sunken cheeks" and "a sharp nose." Johnny Depp does not fit the description of Puddleglum given in the book. Therefore, Johnny Depp should not play Puddleglum.
Puddleglum acts and looks, in Baynes' illustrations, to be on the upper-end of age. Johnny Depp still looks young. Therefore, he should not play Puddleglum.

I would also caution against casting Johnny Depp purely on artistic grounds: he seems to collect quirky roles. Puddleglum would become just another suit in Depp's costume closet, and not a really living Marsh-wiggle as he should be. It's good for Depp, but not for Puddleglum or Narnia.

I dunno, I think it will be.. interesting if Depp gets casted for Puddle. I'm not against it, but I prefer somebody else..
Depp being to young for Puddle, with some makeup and some movie magic they can make him look 150
I agree on your last point, Clive Staples Sibelius
With all of this talk about writing a "Silver Chair" script, could it be possible to open a topic in the GMD forum where we type up adaptations of certain scenes in the Silver Chair?

What's with the hatred with Johnny Depp? You might not like him, but he is a fantastic actor, who is also one of the box office draws in the world. That is at least in this kind of role. I think that there are other good actors, as like you said, Rupert Everett would also be good. As would Bill Nighy.
Lets go SC!
I have nothing against Johnny Depp and his roles in general, but he just doesn't feel right to be playing someone like Puddleglum, even if he can play pessimism. I want an great actor to play Puddleglum, and make you think "that guy could be Puddleglum perfectly" when you see what he looks like and how he acts. But Depp doesn't make me feel that at all. So, Depp's not bad, but I think there's someone else who could fit the bill better.
Also, who needs famous actors to make a great film? Popularity means nothing to me if the actor feels wrong to be doing a paticular character.
EDIT: Let me see what my dream movie group would be...
Director: Andrew Adamson, Michael Apted, or anyone who works well with adapting fantasy novels and getting the main Narnia feel in it.
Screenwriter: I have no idea, but I hope whoever it is can make it a fantastic adaption and a magnificent movie!
Rating: PG, not under, nor over.
Budget: In between $150 and $200
Release Date: Sometime in the winter season, and hopefully 2012

It's not hate. It's just opinion and judgement about who should be cast as Puddleglum. Johnny Depp is, in my opinion, extremely overrated. He pulls off memorable characters when his roles are quirky and weird, but when it comes to actually emoting he is pretty bland. He lacks the skills to pull off Puddleglum's blend of cynicism and belief, I think.

Allow me to say this; You rock, Clive Staples Sibelius. Your persistent and yet intelligent arguments against Johnny Depp as Puddleglum are deserving of a memorial. *hugs Clive Staples Sibelius*

Why thank you very much . The Silver Chair is my favorite book
Composer: Nicholas Hooper...*drools*
Yes! We are very agreed on this point. His scores for the 5th and 6th Harry Potter films were not just run of the mill fare. They were great, outstanding scores. "The Weasley Stomp" should be instituted as one of Britain's anthems . Well, at least, if I was Queen Elizabeth II, I would institute it as such .

Bruce Spence sounds good for Puddleglum as well as Helen McCrory for TLOTGK.
Emily Blunt would be dream casting.
Negative on Depp. He is overrated.

I respect your opinion Clive. I agree that he might be a little overrated, too, and I think that there are many who could pull off the part. But he is a good actor. But so are Rupert Everett and Bill Nighy, so they would be good choices, too.
As for LOTGK, I don't think that anyone can agree on anything here. I've seen way too many candidates, like Emily Blunt, Gemma Arterton, Kate Winslett, and Natalie Portman. I've even seen Megan Fox mentioned on another board (NO! )! So I don't think that we'll agree on anything there. We just need it to be an attractive woman who could enchant a 20-or-so year-old man into following her. She must also be a fantastic actress.
Chris Nolan for director! I know that it will absolutely NEVER happen, but I can dream. Inception, the Batman movies, and The Prestige were all movies that were fantastic, and had great performances and pacing. He's very selective though, and never does more than one project at the same time. Aronofsky would be a more realistic director, and I think that he would be great. Most of the movies he has done have been fantastic. And if he is in the director's chair, I think that Natalie Portman would almost be penciled in as the LOTGK, as they already worked together on Black Swan.

I've never seen a movie with Emilie Blunt, but she doesn't strike me as having the right look. Gemma Arterton in Prince of Persia was unbearable, for me. However, Kate Winslett is not a terrible choice. She has the dignity and poise I would look for in an actress, besides being a terrific actress. I do think she's on the "too young" side, though.

Chris Nolan IS a fantastic director, but I don't think Narnia is his cup of tea. His style of storytelling is incompatible with the kind of storytelling needed in Narnia. He's a superb director, but I think the transition to a largely non-technological setting would be too shocking to his mode of storytelling. He wouldn't know what to do in Narnia. What I will say is that his strength is freshness of images. He knows how to put something onscreen that has never been done before, or to make something old look new.
As you say, we can dream . I'm looking forward to the next Batman movie more than Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. That's saying something!
