Yeah, I'm with Aravis Narnia. Everyone has a different way or time of maturing, whether or not that's a good thing. We really don't know what the case is with what the movie makers and if they'll dare to change the age yet. But you can be an age and yet be more mature than others (like my cousin was) that age. So, I can handle stuff like this, mostly because I'm positive Will can pull it off whatever the deal is, and hopefully the actor of Jill can too. ;)

I have seen boys older than Skandar (and William) engage in behavior more immature than what Edmund is shown doing in the movies.

That may be, but both book-Edmund and movie-Edmund (at least judging by the first two) is beyond that type of behaviour.

Not everyone matures at the same rate in every aspect.

So to me, it is tolerable.

I've seen even grown men act less mature than does the characters Skandar and William play in the movie. Grumpy, selfish old men who have forgotten what it is like to be younger, who idealise their own past behaviour and who really ought to know better. :D The point about Narnia is that once the children get there they have to learn that such behaviour has consequences to other people as well as themselves, and to think more carefully about what they do. In Narnia they don't have supervising adults around to make excuses for them or to complain about them, or to wear the consequences for them. They have instead a magnificent Lion who lays down his life for them.

In Silver Chair we have a Prince who went missing. We know how that happened and who was affected. But what conclusions should we draw about Rilian's character in the events leading up to his abduction?

Over in another thread there is a discussion going on about movie King Caspian making dumb mistakes. And yet in this particular story, it is very clear that book King Caspian makes a rather dumb mistake that has dire consequences to himself and to the country he reigns that VDT movie King Caspian certainly didn't make. I wonder if a movie of SC would make this point, as I hope it will?

While it's true that different boys mature at different rates, there is such a thing as the "normal range," i.e. the spectrum of different maturity levels that you would expect for boys of a certain age. If a boy acts outside that range (girls are an equally complex, but altogether separate subject), it comes off as strange and off-putting. When you say that you've seen boys in their late teens behaving less mature, what behaviors are you talking about specifically? Sticking your tongue out at people? Acting as though kissing is weird and repugnant?

@ werewolf: I'm not talking about bad behavior, I'm talking about immature behavior, as in behavior that's more appropriate for a much younger person. Like a 20-year-old playing with Hotwheels, for example. There's nothing wrong or offensive about it, it's just plain weird. Grumpiness and selfishness, on the other hand, don't have an age.

Also, I wouldn't say Caspian's behavior was stupid. He just didn't have a crystal ball to predict what events would happen.

Grumpiness and selfishness, on the other hand, don't have an age.

Precisely! Hold that thought! Grumpiness and selfishness are at the bottom of both Edmund and Eustace's behaviour. And that is not childish at all.

Edmund is grumpy that he has to help around the house, and that he is being blamed for some of Eustace's misdoings, isn't that so? Edmund is so grumpy about having to share a room with Eustace, that he tries to join the army, something a lot of people did in all armies, even bad armies, to avoid family interactions.

Eustace is being selfish about his cousins' staying with him, as the book also makes clear. Eustace thinks he can do what he likes since Edmund and Lucy are 'only guests'.

Edmund's poking out his tongue at Eustace is probably a more suitable response for a PG movie than his giving Eustace the finger, though I think that would have gone down better with some of our colleagues on NarniaWeb. ;)

There is a question I have about the man behind the newspaper whilst all this was going on: was he even alive? Was it Uncle Harold or his impersonator? Why was he so ostentatiously not supervising anyone else in the room? Didn't he think that was necessary? Mind you, that was a frequent attitude of men in WW2 times, either to be too distant from their families or to interact with them in sometimes brutal ways.

And since this thread is about SC, not VDT, what was wrong with Caspian not going on Rilian's and Lilliandil's picnic?

How did you guess? :-o Edmund making obscene gestures was exactly what I wanted to see!

I wasn't really referring to you, oh most esteemed, Grand High Dark Overlord, since I have no idea what your age is, what your driving style is like, how you behave when driving, in day-to-day activities, whether or not you have annoying siblings, how you behave among friends or even if you are married. I don't know this about anyone on this board, and what is more, there isn't any good reason for me to want to know, I agree. I quite expect that the Grand High Dark Overlord is a most law-abiding and proper moderator, who hates rude gestures more than sin. ;) But what about the minions, a few of whom I could quite believe would use such gestures on occasion, if provoked long enough? :D

:-o 8-| Besides, I am married. With children. :-$

Now back to Silver Chair, this is what I think the problem with Rilian was. He should have been helping Dad with the work, and maybe even Lilliandil as well. The family fell apart with surprising ease once Lilliandil died, didn't it? I wonder how any producers would portray Rilian and what happens?

Well I guess he would be written in simple terms as unhappy (for us adults---psychologically depressed) because being an only child he was really close to his mother. And they have him in his early twenties (I think?) when he loses her, so he was pretty much a mama's boy. ;) If he had been more involved helping his father, then maybe he wouldn't have had time to be idle and go off looking for the worm to revenge his mother's death (this is where he seems an awful lot like Hamlet). :)

"...the Prince stared at her (TLOTGK) like a man out of his wits"....
"There was a look in his eyes as of a man who has seen visions, and though he would be out all day, his horse did not bear signs of hard riding" (SC, Ch.4) So TLOTGK basically gains control of his mind. An idle mind is the devil's playground....

I now really think they should drop "The Chronicles of Narnia" from the Silver Chair movie. The "Narnia" series has ruined it's once good reputation. People don't want to see "another Narnia movie".

So for the advertisements I suggest calling the film "The Silver Chair" and focus the trailers more on Eustace, Jill, Puddleglum, LotGK, and Rillian. Make the film seem more like a mystical mystery rather then a epic fantasy battle movie. The fans of the series will already know what the Silver Chair is (it is the name of the book) and the casual fans will probably be more interested in the film if it doesnt have the Narnia title attatched (cause Narnia now has a reputation for being kiddie rip offs of LotR).

.

I LOVE that idea. One problem with the film franchise is that they keep trying to milk the success of the first movie. They've pretty well milked it dry. Resurrecting characters that don't belong in the later movies, trying to recreate elements of the original. Audiences are over it. 8-|

The "LOTR rip off" factor will be especially damaging when the film(s) go head-to-head with the Hobbit. Most of the books in the series are really original and unique. They need to capitalize on that.

Caspian's own transition into adulthood was unusual. He became a King when he was in his late teens, and from then on he never had any idle time. It wouldn't occur to him to find things for Rilian to do, to keep him out of trouble. Also, it's possible that Caspian was still in shock over the death of his wife. It does, however, seem clear that Rilian was generally closer to his mother than his father.

Honestly, I don't care who plays who, so long as they're moderately like the book's descriptions. I prefer less well-known actors, knowing too much about the actors themselves kind of ruins a movie. The actors should definitely be good role models. this is Narnia, where good triumphs over evil.
A new director might help to refresh Narnia. A fresh start, new perspective, and renewed interest would really help.

I disagree with the dropping of The Chronicles of Narnia from The Silver Chair.

If you mention it is a Narnia movie, at least true fans of the LWW book who have read it may be curious.

But as a standalone fantasy movie, it may not get as many viewers to be honest.

Hmm, not sure what I think about dropping the CoN from the title. Certainly there are a lot of people who dismiss the films right from the start because they perceive the series as being too little-kiddy. But then there is the name recognition factor. As much as I'm sure we all wish everyone who likes the movies would have also read the books, there are many who've never bothered. Will they even realize The Silver Chair is a Narnia film if that's the sole length of the title?

For once I agree with Bookwyrm. I invite you all to google 'silver chair' and see what you get. Yes, you might pick up our Silver Chair, that is to say the Chronicles of Narnia. Chances are you will also pick up Silverchair, the name of a successful Australian pop group headed by Daniel Johns.

Not heard of it? Well never fear. I've already provided a Wikipedia link for you to look up. Now I'm sure that MinotaurforAslan, in particular, would consider the previous name for this group, Innocent Criminals in Merewether, most suitable, as it seems to be a jibe about Australia's convict past. :D But later on they changed the name of the band in honour of C.S.Lewis' book.

Keep the name, Chronicles of Narnia: the Silver chair. I hope the band can somehow be included in it.
