The recent video/pictures of Edmund using a Telmarine sword got me thinking about the design of the film.
What has happened to Narnia since Caspian became king? Should the costumes and weapons be primarily Telmarine or Narnian?
The climax of PC is all about the old days returning after hundreds of years of corruption. So I think there should be a LWW influence in the design. And we should see the return of vibrant color palette, more similar to what we saw in LWW. But also, Narnia has evolved since the golden age, especially in the three years after Caspian's coronation. Two different cultures have now mixed. Narnia has undergone a dramatic transformation by letting the Telmarines in.
But how should that be portrayed on screen? Should there just be a mixture of Telmarine and Narnian props (in the pictures, Caspian appears to have a Narnian sword, and Edmund a Telmarine sword), or should they try to come up with one look that honors both? Or should they come up with a whole new look entirely?
Does that make sense? I guess I'm basically asking what the design of Narnia should be:
1) Narnian. The old days have returned!
2) Telmarine. The Narnians have adopted the Telmarines' design.
3) A mixture. Some Telmarine props and costumes, and some Narnian props and costumes.
4) A new look that that is "one" look, but has both a Narnian and Telmarine influence
5) A whole new look. Neither very Telmarine or very Narnian. Something new.
Well, one has to look no further than the design of the Dawn Treader to get a basic idea of how Telmarine/Narnian styles have evolved since Caspian took the throne. The ship has a very Narnian style about it, but it certainly doesn't match any kind of style we saw in LWW, and definitely not in PC.
Since we don't actually see the country of Narnia during VdT, I don't think we'll get a good idea of how things have changed until SC. The actual Dawn Treader and the crew's uniforms are the best clue we have so far, and I think from what I can tell, it's a new style that has a lot of Narnian and Telmarine influences.
I am thinking half and half since Caspian is telmarine himself and it has only been 3 years and they can't just go remake a whole heap of swords ect.

exactly my sentiment Gymfan.
the style from LWW (at least during the reign for the Kings and Queens) was light and romantic, i noticed that with the color and designs that was selected in the film. during the Telmarine reign the colors were rich but more muted, more "masculine" as it were, these can be seen in the shields, clothes and so on. for VDT you can see that the whimsical and the romantic is returning to the design, but the colors are still of the dark-rich muted variety, which is obvious in the shade selection for the ship's colors. of course it could be said thats its due to the fact that the ruling monarch is male and therefore all color selections-- no matter how they try to throw it back to the romantic golden age of old Narnia-- has to reflect the masculine tastes accordingly. i'm certain that they are going for the Narnia-Telmarine combination, which is essentially a combination of style and function.
You have a chance to become the most noble contradiction in history
...the Telmarine who saved Narnia.
Well, maybe they've gone back to mostly Narnian design with some Telmarine inspiration here and there. I've seen almost no Middle Eastern-looking actors cast which tells me that Michael Apted is probably leaving that part of Telmarine culture behind. But who knows design-wise! Caspian is still one, and I agree that there'll probably be weaponry from those times, but not use much else since the Telmarines are associated with bad memories for the Narnians. For the most part then, I think they've switched back to the good old times.
My vote - 4) A new look that that is "one" look, but has both a Narnian and Telmarine influence
This is far more realistic than merely one style being dominant. I am curious if Caspian will carry Peter's sword.
I think the stylization should be influenced from both the Narnian culture and the Telmarine culture. As Caspian is king and he comes from both worlds, I would think he would put both environments of his life into the designing. In the book, doesn't Caspian say that there is no quarreling between the Narnians or the Telmarines? Wouldn't that be reflective in their new designs, as a coming/blending together motif? I definitely agree with Gymfan15 on the design of the DT itself. It does have a Narnian feel, but it's still very different from the previous designs we've seen in LWW and PC. I think it's great because it does show an evolution of the time period in Narnia and how that effects design phases.

Well, so far, a lot of what I've seen seems to have a more Telmarine look.
Though, I don't really pay attention to the design. It's kind of pirate like, thus I'd have to say Telmarine.
I myself want Narnian. Didn't care for the design of the Telmarines in PC.
What I wonder is, will they still have the poorly done accents like in PC?
That will be distracting if not done well. Especially after hearing the FOTF radio show of VDT, which had all British accents. But adaption is the most important right now. Better than not having a purple sail!

It looks to me that it is a kind of mix. The Dawn Treader itself has some sharp and pointy looking things on it. But not as sharp and pointy looking as some things in Prince Caspian. I think that the Dawn Treader blends the two cultures very nicely. You have a lot of colour, a lot of soft designs (you aslo have some sharp and pointy designs too), and then you have the lanterns on the ship. Similar to the lantern in The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. The only difference is that the lanterns on the Dawn Treader have about 6-8 sides on them. Whereas the LWW lantern has only 4 sides.
And it looks like most of the crew is British! I'm somewhat surprised at this. Here's how I think that you kind of get that British look back into Narnia: The Archenlanders come into Narnia after Caspian becomes King. Or Caspian hires some Archenlanders to be on his crew. (Eh, perhaps that's a little off topic)
Overall, I think as the series progresses into The Silver Chair, The Magician's Nephew, and The Last Battle, we'll be seeing the old Narnian style coming back a lot.
And (I believe Gymfan said this also) since they technically aren't going to be in Narnia in this movie, we probably aren't going to see how much thing have changed. Such as the amour, swords, clothing, hairstyles (?), etc.
So, I'm guessing that we won't see much of that until SC.
I met Georgie and Skandar AND saw the film in one evening.
It does have a Narnian feel, but it's still very different from the previous designs we've seen in LWW and PC.
Designs from what? There's obviously no ships in either one, so just the basic color schemes and emblems?
I say option #3, a mixture of the two. The country will be predominantly Telmarine, methinks, because of the population differences. The Narnians have been repressed for so long, whereas the Telmarines have taken over everything. So I say a mixture. It's going to be fun seeing what they do with it.

I say it should be a mixture as well. Sort of like how the architecture and designs of the Byzantine Empire in our world is a unique mixture of Roman and Asian influences. I really liked the Telmarine designs, and think they should continue at least into this movie, and maybe fade away as the series progresses.

I think it will be at least partly Telmarine. One of the people that visited the sets on the Narnia News page said something about seeing dark skinned poeple dressed in red on the ship. But then again the pictures didnt show many dark skinned people, so who knows. I would hope they dont just throw that out.
your fellow Telmarine
I think it should be more Narnian than Telmarine, but I do think it should have at least some Telmarine style in it.
"Are you sure you're eighteen?"
"Why? Do I look older?"
It's hard to say. On one hand, the Telmarines don't really have a "style" for their ships per se because they haven't sailed in decades. We still see the motifs and such, but that's it, so the ship can't help but be Narnian.
I tend to look at the costumes and weapons as being Telmarine but now with the craftwork of dwarfs, fauns and such contributing. Sort of a reinvented Telmarine look if you will.

I think it will be a Telmaine look overall, but with Narnian laced over the top. Caspian as King would be trying to bring the Narnians back into power, and so their styles and designs would be slowly emerging. The Dawn Treader itself is a perfect example of it. After all, She is a very Narnian ship
When I visited the set, the props and costumes were all ceratinly Telmarine, the sailors are ewearing costumes similar to the Lords of the Council in PC. They were also using Telmarine eagle crossbows that we saw in Prince Caspian, and all other props had Telmariney embellishments, eg, stars, silver, very angular sort of figures.
All the sailors were dark-skinned with facial hair. Good to see that the facial hair is being kept in XD
I really want the Narnian style back! LWW was so beautiful, with Aslans head everywhere, and as much as I loved the Telmarine eagles and stars, I do prefer the Lion. I can't wait to see the final result though!
100th Post! Yay,I'm a Narnia Nut!!!!!
