Anybody else wonder what is the purpose/story of the piece of cloth Caspian holds in his hand when he and Edmund look for Eustace on the Dragon/Goldwarder Island? It caught my interest the first time I saw it, and I admit I have high hopes to see a deleted scene explaining the small story behind it Normally I would assume it's an embroidered map, but that seems pointless since the island was an uncharted one... It doesn't seem likely he brought it along to wipe his and Ed's forehead from effort of climbing It seems to me there definitely is some deleted story behind it! I hope we'll see it in the deleted scenes, or better still, in the Extended Edition for which I'm fervently praying.
Any ideas? Let's speculate

I didn't notice a cloth in Caspian's hand when I saw the film. Was this before they found Eustace or the part where they are indicating they are close to finding him?

It's when we see them walking and shouting "Eustace!", then in the close-up on them (from waist up) you can see it better, and then once more afterwards, when the Dragon Eustace flies up to them (after escaping from the ship), Caspian ducks and Dragon Eustace snatches Edmund. It seems intriguing to me that Caspian holds it after they discover the ruined remnants of Eustace's clothes, it makes me wonder what small deleted story was behind it I really wonder what could it be!

Yes that is what I was thinking as well. It may be a cloth from Eustace's shirt. My little niece is with me and joked that maybe Caspian and Edmund were still fighting and said Caspian ripped his Edmund's cuff or something but they deleted it . I was like "no hun, no." He wouldn't still have it or them gotten that far if a quarrelment began again.

I don't think it could be a piece of Eustace's clothes, seeing as Caspian holds it already before he and Edmund find the charred remnants. But somehow, for me the fact that he holds it still after they presume Eustace was 'destroyed', means to me that there was some small story behind it. Haha, I loved the theory, though indeed it doesn't seem plausible Plus it seems to me the cloth was square, a bit like a halved pillow case, but what the heck Caspian would be doing with a pillowcase on a quest for Eustace? I really wonder what it is, it made me think of some fancy embroidered map, but it couldn't have been a map.

My copy of VODT Movie Storybook arrived last night, and in it is a still shot of Edmund taking the sword out of Goldwater and Caspian with his hand outstretched holding the white cloth. So I am assuming even though the two swords did not turn gold because they were 'magic', he was protecting himself (from turning to gold) bc the sword was wet coming out of the water.
When Edmund goes to find Eustace, Caspian hands Lucy the sword, and I guess he just kept the cloth??? My take anyway...
I admit I'm hard-pressed to find photographic evidence of this, but from watching the scene in the movie, I'm positive the cloth in the Eustace Search scene is actually Eustace's knitted pullover - this one:
Remember Eustace isn't wearing it when he wanders off.
I'm not sure about the Deathwater scene.

I assumed it was from Eustace's shirt, as Edmund was holding Eustace's shoe around this time...

I noticed this on my own, and I am positive that it's Eustace's sweater vest. As I recall, Caspian is holding it in the shot immediately before Edmund says "Treasure" and Caspian responds 'Trouble'. They have not yet found the rest of Eustace's clothing.
My guess is there is a deleted scene where they find Eustace's sweater vest. This scene might also feature some patching-things up dialogue. After finding it, they go on and discover the rest of Eustace's things as shown in the film. Remember, although they found his trousers, shirt, shoes, and journal, his sweater-vest was not in the gorge with the rest of his possessions.
I guess I didn't notice it, I'll have to remember to look for it the next time I see the movie. An extended edition DVD would be awesome and I hope there's some explaining about this.
it must have been some of Eustace's clothes! I just came back from seeing the movie for the 4th time and I saw that piece of cloth.....I am sure it was part of Eustace's burned clothes!

Maybe Caspian wanted to have a funeral for Eustace's clothes?
well, if Eustace was dead, they would probably have the clothes as proof for the others.....

lamp post and lilies, the cloth on the film isn't white, but I like the addition the story book made - I always felt it was odd that Caspian takes the wet sword with his bare hand.
Adeona, that indeed seems probable... I'm going to see the film again on Monday so I'll be bulging my eyes out to see what it is Though I wonder why would they carry it along. I definitely hope the scene features some patching-things-up moments, because Caspian and Edmund's friendship is one of my top favorite threads in the film!
Liberty Hoffman, the thing is, Caspian holds the cloth before they find the burnt clothes...
I hope we'll have a nice deleted scene explaining it, or better yet, an extended edition
