The new issue of SFX Magazine (issue #203) came out today, and contains the full Michael Apted interview which had the quote about stealing from "the book CS Lewis didn't write" which they had previewed on their website last month, causing quite a stir amongst the Narnia fan community online.
The full interview is not particularly long and doesn't contain any further information or clarification on what he meant by the aforementioned comment, though i feel Apted does redeem himself very much by revealing that he fought to keep the Dufflepuds present and intact within the movie (i had often thought the Dufflepuds were something that would of got axed when it came to the movie, or at least signifcantly "reimagined" to make them more realistic and grounded in reality, so i do think its important to appreciate the fact that Apted made sure they worked so hard translate them from page to screen as accurately as they did) and that he was also very keen to make sure the movie started in our world this time around (I know some people wanted to see an opening with Miraz and the Lords, but i for one feel its very important from a storytelling perspective for the Narnia stories' narrative to start in our world from the children's point of view, so i am very pleased to see that Apted agreed with this).
I am still baffled about the bit about stealing from the book CS Lewis "didn't write" though - aside from the fact that the Dark Island's mist is coloured green in the movie, i have no idea what he could be on about, even with everything we've learned about the plot in the last few weeks. But oh well, i'm sure we'll find out soon, for better or worse.

It should be big enough to read as it is, but if not you can access a bigger version of it here:

Plus the two pictures contained within it looked new to me, so i added some close up shots of them here:
Its nice to see that he wanted to keep the Dufflepuds. The movies so far have been trying to be realistic, so its nice to see someone who wants to make the world more magical (when need at least.)

1) He says witches again.
2) They fixed the rest of that line
3) So how can you draw on it? Does this mean the witches will not come up either?
4) Another poor pic of the dragon, but I think its still improvement, and it looks like this is an old pic so I'm hopeful
5) Does that mean they almost didn't put the dufflepuds in there for the same reason , a low budget?!
6) Hooray Michael Apted for keeping the duffelpuds

"Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down
Thank goodness he kept the Dufflepuds in the movie. I would've freaked out if they hadn't been there.
I also don't mind(and I like) the beginning change, since I think it's kind of neat to start VDT more calmly then the other two movies, and then move into the action and tension.
Darn you "witches" word! I really hope that's an error, and that Apted mean "witch's."
Love the picture of Aslan's Country!
The other pic(the one with Dragon Eustace) feels odd to me. I imagine it'll look better in context. But I thought it was sweet that his ears were drooping, and boy, he looks depressed!
I also want to know what the dragon's eyes colors are. Yeah, they're blue in the trailer, which were awesome, but in this picture and another one similar to it, his eyes are brown. Do they change colors, or are the pictures we're getting lying?
In the end, I still feel like Apted's doing a pretty good job with VDT. Hopefully, I'll be saying the same(or higher) by the time it comes out!
I have high hopes for Apted, but I'm still suspicious. The fact that he fought to keep the dufflepuds in the movie makes me more confident about his work on the film, but its not enough to get rid of all my worries. Shastafan, I agree! I hope that I will say that Apted has done a good if not great job with the film.

I thought this interview would sound better in in its entirety. Oh well.
He wanted to give the movie an "emotional underbelly." What about Reepicheep's longing for Aslan's Country and Eustace's redemption? Aren't those emotional enough? And the movie is still going to be episodic. They'll still be having separate adventures on separate islands. I don't see how the seven swords plot makes it less episodic. It will probably help build up some tension and anticipation for the final battle, but it won't take away the episodic nature of the story.
The book Lewis didn't write...the Blue Star of Ramandu...no real reason for the journey. All of that is still in there. I was hoping that it just sounded bad because we only got an excerpt before.
Yes, he kept the Dufflepuds, but he kept them because they are "iconic." They should be kept because they are great characters that add something to the story not because they are iconic.
However, even though almost all of his statements made me cringe, his last response I actually liked. I completely agree that beginning in our world is the best way to do it.
I'm suspicious of the interview if only for the 'Blue Star of Ramandu' quote. Logic indicates that he would have referred to her as 'Ramandu the star's daughter' or 'Ramandu's daughter' or 'the star's daughter'. Actually, I would think he would automatically call her 'Lilliandil' as that's probably what he would refer to her as while directing her scenes. If he was talking about her as the daughter of Ramandu he would probably have mentioned the word 'daughter'; if he was referring to the fact that she turns into a blue star and is seen on Ramandu's island he might refer to her as 'the Blue Star from Ramandu's Island". Heck, even 'the star girl' would be a logical title to use. But if he refers to her in relation to the name 'Ramandu' it just *doesn't make sense* to me that he would leave out the word 'daughter'.
Or, maybe I'm thinking about this too much and should go to bed.

The book Lewis didn't write...the Blue Star of Ramandu...
Yeah! If you want to choose which is the more dispensible character out of Coriakin, Ramandu's daughter and Ramandu, which one would you pick? Obviously if Caspian is going to marry the daughter, and she becomes important to subsequent books, you have to keep her, and even exalt her a bit. And if it is a choice between Coriakin and Ramandu, which character would you consider more important? Certainly not Ramandu. I expect that is what Apted meant by in between information between Silver chair and VDT.
Anyway I am looking forward to the film. I hope that news report is right about it being shown on Dec 2nd in Australia.
Yes, VDT comes out on Dec. 2nd in Australia.
Currently watching:
Doctor Who - Season 11
Having seen the movie, I was struck by a new thought. It seems the script for a film has to be written before it can be greenlit.
Could there be any chance that such as script is currently being written for Silver Chair?
