[Closed] SFX Magazine #201 - New Photo!

The November issue of SFX Magazine which was released today, contained a brand new photo from Voyage of the Dawn Treader! The picture was included in a regular feature they run called "Big Shot", which as the name suggests is a big photo from a movie, blown-up over a double page spread, with various annotations added explaining what is going on.

The VDT picture they have this month is a shot of a small skirmish between Edmund and Lucy (and possibly Caspian, though he can't actually be seen in the photo) and some of Gumpas' men situated in the Bell Tower Set. Here is a photo of the magazine pages so you can see:

A few observations of note regarding the photo...

Firstly, it would appear to be a continuation of the scene shown in this photo, which was also at the base of the Bell Tower, although the shot here is very clearly lit as daylight, whereas the previous shot implies its dark enough to warrant the use of a torch, so maybe a certain amount of time has elapsed between the two scenes, or maybe someone just opened the windows...

Secondly, the man that Edmund is confronting looks perhaps to me to be this man here whilst the man that Lucy is scuffling with could perhaps be the man we believed to be Pug here though thats just a guess.

A few observations with regard to the Bell Tower scene in general....

You may recall a while ago we heard in a video interview with one of the stunt-men on Australia Sunrise News, where he talked about a scene where the stunt crew were required to slide down the Bell Tower ropes, resulting in a sword fight. You may also recall this echoed an scene described in the now infamous "leaked script" in which armed slavers slide down the Bell Tower ropes to confront Edmund, Lucy, Caspian (and also Dr Cornelius as it was back then). This photo evidently is a shot of the fight that ensues once the slavers have slid down the ropes. You may also be able to notice in the photo that the Slavers appear to be armed with nothing more than small knives, which again is another "Leaked Script" detail (the slavers were holding the knives between their teeth as they slid down in that script).

Another thing you may notice is that the books, candles and various other documents that we saw in the previous photo, are all sat on top of what appears to be a big stone casket. Its hard to tell completely what it is, but it does appear to be very definitely big and made of stone, rather than being a wooden table or anything. Another leaked script detail you may recall is that right before the slavers slid down the bell tower rope to confront the heroes, they had slid the lid of a stone casket at the base of the Bell Tower, and they had realised that the Stone Knife was apparently missing from inside (Edmund even shone his torch inside to look

However, the photo here would seem to imply that the lid is very much still on the casket. The books and such on top look as dusty and undisturbed as we previously saw them to be. Unless of course they merely slid the lid slightly ajar to get a quick look in it, but it is possible that something significant may have changed in this scene with regard to its previous appearance in the Leaked Script, besides Dr Cornelius no longer being there of course.

The books are on a big stone coffin. Strange. I don't know what to think. The whole witches knife seems very strange. I know that it is mentioned in the book, but that seems strange to be the cause of the darkness. I guess it at least is not some new made up object.

Thanks for your thoughts icarus. Always worth the effort.

Looking at the photo, my first guess was that someone turned up the brightness in photoshop. I am no expert, so I could be wrong, but it looks like the scene could still take place in the dark. Or, as you said, someone opened the windows.

I wonder why they called the Magician's Book the Book of Shadows. Probably has no significance whatsoever, but it's a very odd title. Oh, and I noticed that the writers of this magazine apparently prefer epic battles and Big Bads.

As for the casket: :- :-?? 8-} /:)

Excellent analysis of the picture, icarus.

The similarities to the leaked script are disturbing, but I'm hoping like mad that this scene was the only one that managed to make it into the final draft.

For the life of me I can't figure out what the Stone Knife could possibly have to do with the plot. A tomb with bells and headless statues and ancient documents and the dagger that was used to kill Aslan? In listless Narrowhaven, of all places? At this point, weird is the only word for it.

First of all, GREAT PIC!!!! But a little confussing :- I dont remember there being a fight in the book with Edmund and Lucy(because they were being hled captive) and what would the stone knife have to do with this scene :- :- Well I suppose we will just have to see the movie to get things clearified ;) :D :) I am very happy though to see some kind of promotion for Dawn Treader :p

I love the photo on a purely aesthetic level. I love the costuming, the set, and the general feel of it - it definitely conjures up the mood of the book, even if some of the details aren't straight from Lewis's text.

I have a feeling that they had left some of the things in the leaked script. In screenwriting class I've learned that once an original screenplay is written some will still stick around when most of it is revised such as taking things out or expanding the ideas originally written. I like everything that I'm hearing so far, but what about the stone knife? I thought it was at Ramandu's Island. Unless they pull some sort of Prince of Persia plot on us where Caspian brings Lilliandil the knife that is a guardian of. It shall be good. ;)

wow! I love this photo! It looks like the movie is coming together so beautifully! ;) I'm less worried about Susan and Peter being in the movie (from what Anna said) and this looks so neat. I had *wondered* if maybe Eustace wasn't with them when they got captured by Pug. This is purely speculation, but remember the screencap of Narrowhaven we had? All the characters *EXCEPT* Eustace were pasted on that background. What if he was sitting there waiting for them? And then he got captured later? or before? Anyways, that is purely speckulation. If it worries you, don't take my word for it, okay? :- Chances are, I could be wrong, but it stands to reason Eustace is the sort of snot to *not* go with them to the bell tower.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the leaked script. Especially if Cornelious was in it :-s

And about the lighting in the picture, my guess is... it could be a night scene (to warrent the torch in our first picture we had from the Bell Tower) because most of the time they shoot these scenes during the day... not at night. So the first picture we had would have been shot during the day, but they would have darkened it for the movie. So maybe this picture just hasn't been darkened like the other.

Anyone notice that Edmund has Caspian's spanish sword? Or it looks spanish. It sure isn't Rhindon :)

Overall, it looks good! This looks like a perfectly awesome movie, Apted! Thanks for the report, icarus! You're great at getting these stories for us!

:music: risk it all cuz I'll catch you if you fall... if my heart was a house you'd be home :music:

Very much agree on that point.

Icarus, is there anyway we can read all those tiny articles all over the picture? :-

If you click on one of the flickr links (at the bottom of the first post), and then bring up the large size for each image, you should be able to read the text. Or use the direct link here if it will work:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/8122966@N0 ... 1/sizes/l/

Though i wouldn't really worry about being able to read it, since the text merely contains their opinions as to what is going on - quite thankfully they even use the phrase "our best guess..." in most of the comments, so you can be certain they didn't have any additional information to go on when writing it.

That said though, their guesses were pretty solid for a magazine which is primarily a sci-fi magazine, and they did get one thing right that most of the magazine articles i think got wrong - that VDT is probably the best book, but its not because its the most cinematic, in fact its fundamentally un-cinematic in many ways

Thanks again, icarus. :) Nice to have a new shot of something. I too agree with the "it looks nice" sentiments.

Looks like there will be a skirmish with Gumpas' and also Pug's men as well. I think I can handle that. I just hope somehow they also incorporate
the deception-of-strength/numbers element from the book. B-)

If they can do both, then the Narrowhaven account/narrative should turn out pretty good. :)
