I think it's interesting that Lewis tends to start his books by speaking about the kids, not the situation--in fact, with the exception of MN and LB, they all do (and even MN uses the second person You).
Good point. This is the one thing that separates Narnia from other book series, it's character driven. It's very personal. While LOTR is a very good book trilogy, it is largely driven by action and adventure as apposed to relationships.

To a certain extent. I'd say the relationship between Sam and Frodo is one of the soundest in Fantasy lit, and is definitely a drawing point in the trilogy. But yeah, Narnia is extremely character-driven. Take notes, directors!
