[Closed] PRINCE CASPIAN: Two years later...

I really haven't watched much of PC since its theatrical release. There are still some things about it that completely make me cringe. I get that changes need to be made because of the layout of the book is reading not viewing material and its not one of the most favorite books in the series, but honestly that's not excuse to give that the movie "didn't work". I for one happen to like the PC book very much and I think that a filmmaker would thrill at the chance to take a non-cinematic book and make it something amazing to see on screen. Anyway, let me talk about changes:

The whole romance bit: Makes me cringe even more. In theaters, I would sort of grimace at all the subtle cuts between Caspian and Susan, now these shots just nauseate me. They just make the stupid kiss all the more unbearable. Andrew Adamson would talk about avoiding the cliche (for example, designing the persona of the White Witch), but what is more cliche than having a love story intertwine with a Medieval/Fairy Tale-esque type story? Every prince has his damsel in distress, every King Arthur has his Guinevere, and every Robin Hood has his Maid Marian, why do we need to see it again? As a movie goer, I applaud what isn't typically seen in a genre. The idea of Ben and Anna looking the part isn't enough to make the change. Remember, it's the characters we are dealing with, not the actors portraying them. I just really hope that this film decision doesn't open the floodgate for Susan to included into The Last Battle (as much as we all love her).

Peter's Personality: I'm a little more accepting of this change now. I get that he has a lesson to learn as a king. However, I would be completely satisfied with this change had the deleted scene before the duel been kept in the film. I feel that it's very important to see the acceptance and bond between Caspian and Peter before the duel begins.

VFX: I still cringe at the look of Aslan at Beruna Bridge. I'm drawn out the film at this point because there is no since of believability. I applaud the effects taken in Aslan's physical action (the fierceness of his roar and when Lucy talks and interacts with him), but on the close-ups and such, I just didn't believe in Aslan as much as his look in LWW.

Don't get me wrong, there are elements in PC that I absolutely loved the first time around and still do. The scene in the tube station, for example, is brillant. I just love the fact that the Pevensies seem to stand still and it's the world around them that changes. This scene also adds a nice set of bookends for the film. I also really love the short scene at the campfire with the dialogue between Susan and Lucy. Also, some of the locations for PC are so breathtaking and very Narnian. I love the coloration at Glasswater Creek and the landscape for the fern forest is also one of my favorites. Oh, I do have to mention Cair Paravel's ruins, great scene as well (I'm very glad to see the apple trees and the gold chess piece).

To sum it up, on my personal list of favorite films, LWW makes it into my top 10, PC might make it into my top 100. I would say that matters considering, I'm pretty pleased with the first half of PC, but after that I sort of lose my interest (that is not to say that the second half of the film is without its moments). PC is just an okay film, but I am glad that the Narnia books are coming to the screen and not in a modern look (thank you for keeping the 1940s look).

Two years! Wow, time flies!

Purely as a film, I think PC is superior to LWW, though I do enjoy watching them both. PC has some beautiful cinematography.

My opinion overall really hasn't changed much since those early days: PC is a good action film, enjoyable to watch, but as an adaptation it's a little lacking. Part of this, as others have said, may be due to the difficulty in adapting the book to the big screen.

But the best memory of both films is traveling to other cities and watching them with other NarniaWebbers at Lion Parties. I'm looking forward to doing this with VDT as well!

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

I can't even watch PC anymore. At first I was like, well that was okay I guess. But now when I watch it, I realize it was trying to be this incredibly intense, epic film and it just wasn't. When I watched it again I was like, did I really just waste the time to watch this pathetic film? PC is a joke of a movie, good for entertainment if you're really bored but a horrible adaptation. The only part I liked was the kiss at the end, which was cute.

I just watched PC last night and the film has improved a little with time. Although I think there were a few minor writing issues that needed to be cleaned up, (How did the Pevencies know that Caspian was leading the Narnians? Why is Reepicheep so rude to Pattertwig? Why are the leaders of the Narnians fighting?...And in front of their army??? I don't like Peter fighting with Caspian, but if you are going to put it in the film, then please, don't let them do it in front of the troops!) I think the film was decent overall and was engaging enough for an evening's entertainment.

One of the things that I was most impressed with while watching last night was the quality of acting in the film. Also the visuals are quite stunning all around.

I think what time has done for me is help me to accept that the book and the movie are two similar, but separate stories. I'm beginning to accept the book for what it is and the movie for what it is and not blame one for not being the other.

I think I feel about the same. The scenes I liked best in the theater are the ones I like best today, and the scenes I didn't like in the theater are the ones I don't like today. I have come to the point where I understand some changes, but I don't agree with them.
Most of the book is the flashback. Okay, so they brought the Pevensies in earlier. That one works.
Mr. Adamson wanted to explore how it would feel for a king to go back to being a boy so Peter is a brat. Still don't like. That's not Peter in the film. But I can live with it.
Susan is older and Caspian is cute. Whatever. That's not Susan and Caspian either. No offense Suspian fans. I guess I'm weird, but I just don't understand the need for romance.
I liked the Cair Paravel scenes, but after the chase sequence they do feel a bit slow. The chase was good, but I think a less rapid opening would have helped the overall pace.
The dream bit was very good, but Aslan didn't look real.
I liked the Sorcery and Sudden Vengeance scene. Don't ask me why, I just do. Although the werewolf wasn't scary enough.
The duel was boring. I had very little desire to root for Peter because by this point in the film I didn't like him. I thought he was horrible and there really wasn't a scene where he redeemed himself.
I do not like the script at all. The sarcasm and modern dialogue were the last straw. Especially the "Oh my gosh, he's so cute!" Sure, it's a great moment for Reep's character development, but it's still an awful line.

Overall, I think PC is a better movie than LWW. However, LWW has more of the Narnia feel to it. But I think both fell short of the mark.

I was thinking this the other night while watching it. It's so horribly awkward and immature! I hated it. I can't watch that scene now, it just sticks out like a sore thumb.

I liked the Sorcery and Sudden Vengeance scene. Don't ask me why, I just do. Although the werewolf wasn't scary enough.

I love this scene. But I agree. The werewolf could have been better.

ditto.

The way the Pevensies and Caspian bickered in front of their troops really irked me as well. By the end of the movie I was pretty convinced that Peter was the last person I'd follow into battle and Caspian was almost as bad.

um, isn't this thread supposed to be for talking about seeing PC in theaters for the first time two years ago? can't we make a seperate thread to discuss why some parts were not so well done? if I may say, some of us like the changes in PC.....

um, isn't this thread supposed to be for talking about seeing PC in theaters for the first time two years ago?

nope, this is for discussing our like/dislike for PC.

How do you feel about the film now? Do you feel better or worse? Or about the same? Are there any specific changes that you didn’t like that you are now okay with (or vice versa)? How do you feel about it as an adaptation vs. as a stand-alone film?

if I may say, some of us like the changes in PC.....

and some of us don't. This thread is for us to discuss our opinions. So feel free to like the changes all you want, but everyone who doesn't like them can still talk about not liking them.

A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy? Hospitality Committee

I found this thread interesting reading, as the general consensus seems to be LWW > PC. Personally, i liked LWW in theaters, but it lost a great deal of enjoyment for me the second time i watched it and continued to go down in my opinion over time. Whereas with PC, i remember almost laughing out loud about halfway through, thinking, And this is based on C.S. Lewis' book?, but i've liked it about equally with each re-watching. Of course, i haven't seen it lately, so that might not be true any more.

Perhaps i liked PC better because it was so unlike its book, i couldn't think of both at the same time, so i could accept it better as a film.

Wait.. PC came out on May 16?? I know.. I'm terrible. But this means I actually unknowingly watched it on the anniversary. lol. :-o :p

I've sort of forgotten how I felt when I first saw it. I hadn't read the book in a while but even so I could tell that they strayed a great deal from it. Overall, I think I left the cinema after enjoying a good movie.

And here everyone seems to hate it. :(( :p
I can never decide whether I like LWW or PC better.
I've seen LWW so many times now that it sort of.. bores me. It has some really good moments but I feel like they could have done a better job.
PC, on the other hand, although at first I felt like I could only enjoy it if I thought of it as a separate world from the book, I think it does sort of stay true to the book in terms of themes, and the overall plot. Now that I read the book and watch it again, I can't see how else they could have done it, without making the changes to the plot that they did. Of course, certain.. elements, could have been left out. ;)

We'll see about VDT, but for now I'm happy with the movies that have been made. I don't think a movie is ever fully going to satisfy a book, for me, anyway.

When I watched PC in the theater I was shocked! I was expecting it to go by the book like LWW. At first I hated it. But as time went by I cooled off a bit. And now its not that I love it but I don't hate it either. It has become just another movie.
I hope that VDT will be better.

On the whole, I still like PC, probably just as much as when I first saw it. :) I think over time some of the changes I've come to like less, but that still doesn't mean I absolutely hate them. I suppose all in all, even with some of the ones I liked less, for me there's just no use getting worked up about it- no matter how much I vent and rant it's not going to take away those scenes, and it's much better to move on, accept that PC was perhaps not up to it's full potential, hope VDT is better, and all in all, have my peace about PC still intact.

Yes, this is how I feel. I really think that the filmmakers did a decent job with what they were given. I mean, the PC book is very hard material to work with. It just was not written to be a movie (with all the flashbacks and long, drawn-out scenes).

I am still disappointed about some of the changes but every time I watch it, I understand a little more why they added certain things, and it does get a little bit better. Still, LWW is still my favorite by far.

GTG: oh, okay I didn't see that.....

Aslans Country: it looks like you and I are the only ones who really like PC on this thread :P :((
I love the movie!
I think this is largly because PC was never my favorite book (when I first read it I was annoyed with how boring I found it to be [just my personal opinion]) so when I first saw the movie, I was so glad to see that it was more dramatic! :D

Not the only ones LH. I loved it. I thought it blew the book out of the water. Don't like Suspian but LOVED the rest of it. It kinda bugs me that a lot of people don't like it but oh well. We all have our own opinions.
