[Closed] PRINCE CASPIAN: Two years later...

It’s May 16! Two years after the theatrical release of “Prince Caspian.”

How do you feel about the film now? Do you feel better or worse? Or about the same? Are there any specific changes that you didn’t like that you are now okay with (or vice versa)? How do you feel about it as an adaptation vs. as a stand-alone film?

My thoughts:

I think I still feel about the same. LWW was a pretty good film that got slightly worse with age. PC was a pretty good film that got slightly better with age.

As a stand-alone film: I like the first two acts. Then, starting with the White Witch scene, the story just starts to derail. It feels like they just weren’t sure what should happen after the Night Raid…so they just kind of kept going and figured they might as well have a battle.
I still think it’s a decent adaptation, considering the difficult source material. The themes of return, faith, and the myth becoming fact are not nearly as strong as in the book, but they are there. There are a couple scenes, like when they see the carvings at the How, that give me chills. I can point at that scene at say “THAT is what I love about the book.” But of course, there are also some areas where they totally dropped the ball. Having “short tempers” between Caspian and Peter could have worked if it was more subtle. The execution was very poor.

I still like it a little bit better than LWW. But I don't think either film is anything special. Enjoyable, well acted PG fantasy films, but little more.

Eh, I think my favourite viewing of Prince Caspian was the second one.

Like gP, there are scenes that I found amazing, but they only make me sad, because the rest of it was not Narnia as I imagined it.

Visually, it's beautiful. The rest of it I'd like to happily ignore. :p

I've only watched it 4-6 times. I really don't feel like it stands up to multiple viewings the way LWW does.
But I've also realized that Reep's character was closer to the book than I thought.

During the whole time its been out I've only watched it four times. I even have it on DVD and watched it three times. I watched it with my friend who saw the first one and she never read the books and absolutely disliked it. I told her I wasn't fond of it either and told me that I just wasted good money on a movie that seemed to be written in a hurry with last minute things that were thrown in. Everyone i know including my large family dislikes the movie and loves the first.

I bought the DVD just to have it basically since i am a Narnia fan but for some reason I get frustrated with it when I go past 55 minutes of it.

This movie would have been a great adaptation if: There was more character development, Gave Peter and Susan something to actually learn from (Susan seems as if she always got what she wanted and didn't learn anything by the end, what was her purpose in anything except seducing Caspian and killing more people then everyone else?), The unnecesarry conflicts, battles, scenes that could have been taken out or done better, no Caspian/Susan (It was never in the book and it never took off and would have never done so, so why add it in the first place?) X(

I'm going to stop here before I rant.

If anyone wants me to continue just say so please.

Two years! :-o Feels like yesterday (of course LOTR feels like yesterday to me to. :p ) That was a great day, waiting at midnight in line, playing my new Prince Caspian DS game while I waited. And of course finally getting to see the movie!!!! :D :p
Two years later I LOVE PC as much as the first time I saw it! :D Of course there were many changes, but I understood why they made them (with the exception of the whole Susan and Caspian thing. ;) ) and I think because I knew why they made the changes they did, it was really enjoyable for me to watch! :)
I personally Love both LWW and PC the same, because I feel they each match their books well (even though they made changes to PC)! :)

Me and my family are getting ready to watch PC in about an hour since we always watch Narnia and LOTR on the dates they came out. :D :p
As a side note, I can’t believe LWW is going to be five the night I go see VDT at midnight, it seriously doesn’t feel that long! :-o :D

PC just gets worse every time I watch, and then exponentially worse every time I read the book. When I first saw it I enjoyed it, but haven't much since.
I do adore LWW though. I think it was done masterfully and enjoy watching it every now and then.

OK, my thoughts, the condensed version :p :

LWW is my #1 favorite movie of all time. ;) I think it hardly could have been done better, although I've read a lot of what people don't like about it. I've seen it 3 times.

PC, well...is more complicated. ;) I have seen it twice. When I first read the summary of the entire movie (I read the summary before I watched it!), I ranted on it for at least a straight week or two. When I finally got the chance to see it, I wasn't shocked, because I knew just what to expect. I was not impressed simply because I had the book in mind all the time.

As time has passed, I've been able to see it from more viewpoints, though. PC really did have a lot of the same things happen, it's just that the story was retold a different way. If I don't compare it to the book, I find that I like it. It has a lot of action. If not compared to the book, I feel that certain elements -- like the White Witch actually appearing, instead of simply the part of the hag beginning to call her up -- made it better. It was a link to LWW, so isn't that interesting for the moviegoer (who hasn't happened to have read the books)?

I could go on and on too ;) , but I won't...for the moment. :p ;))

My feeling now is the same as it was two years ago after PC first came out: the film is a letdown. The only thing I can't complain about were the special effects, which I thought were superior to LWW.

Then, and now, I still think too much of the PC soundtrack is recycled from LWW - though "Prince Caspian Flees" is an excellent piece that I still enjoy. The addition of a romance between Caspian and Susan makes even less sense after repeated viewings. And the river god sequence, while good, pales in comparison to the concept art for that scene - which depicted a bigger god and a bigger bridge.

I agree that the story seems to lose steam after the castle raid, and that tempers and the romance seem like tacky plot add-ons that were totally unnecessary. Perry Moore said in late '05 that they had a script nearly ready for PC. With filming not starting until '07, you'd think the script should have had plenty of time to be polished and make sense. Ditto, the marketing plan.

I continue to be disappointed that Adamson & friends left two small, but not insignificant, parts out of the film. One is Caspian and Cornelius going up in the tower to talk about old Narnia. Every time I read the book I wish this had made it on screen, and some of the concept art actually depicted this, so I'm not sure what happened there. It would have been good exposition for viewers who were unfamiliar with the first film/book. But nope, left on the writing room floor in place of a screaming women having a baby.

And two, the total elimination of Caspian's nurse from the film. In the book, their reunion at the end of the story was a touching moment, which is not a bad thing after you've witnessed the slaughter of who knows how many creatures. Instead, viewers were treated to a kiss and a somewhat jarring song from Regina Spektor.

As far as VDT goes, it will be hard not to produce a better film.

How do I say this nicely,..

Prince Caspian stank to me. I viewed it only once and that will be the last until I have the absolute guts to watch this thing again.
I probably will watch it again but first I need to see how the story, plots, subplots and how Caspian and RD are handled in VDT before watching this again. (I wish a edited version of PC can come out to make Narnia's true fans enjoy PC without having to see these scenes that are some what derogatory to some of us)

First:

The Positives: The effects were better then the first movie. I loved the scene where Caspian flees at the beginning of the film. The costumes and culture brought to the Telmarines was very breathtaking. The Gorge was how I imagined reading the book. At least Aslan, Lucy and Edmund were in character the entire time. The River God was extraordinary.

The Negatives:

Peter's Conflict: I do understand in Peter's ordinary world back in England he's not a 30 year old king in the golden age of Narnia anymore. It was very understanding at the beginning but throughout his conflict with Caspian was really ticking me off. You are in Narnia again Peter so start setting the example for the creatures and the next rightful King. Everything is not about him.

The Night Raid: A very unnecessary addition along with the Pevensies. If they were already planning to do one then do it before the Pevensie's arrived to Aslan's How. Because during all the time wasted on this battle in the movie, Adamson could have gotten his character development in without making the middle part of the movie tacky and cliche as ifeveryone was running around and it made the whole film look as if no one was having a real conversation.

Lucy's dream: I wish when she came upon Aslan was real so she would have gotten her Lioness powers from Aslan. I was looking forward to this scene when I read it in the book.

The Beginning: I was really thrown off to see and hear the first thing in this film was Queen Prunaprismia having a baby. It was disgusting and not Disney appropriate at all.

Caspian/Susan: This bothers me more then any of the changes because it is the most cliche love story I had ever seen in my entire life watching movies. I wouldn't much call it a love story because there was no story there and it didn't look like love either. It was Hollywood typical. The first thing I heard in disliking this idea in the first place was reading something Adamson said "Well Ben's a looker and Anna is grown up and pretty, why wouldn't they like each other?"
Um that's 100 percent shallowness there and should not be the reason to throw in something between them based on looks. Caspian looked six years older then Susan for one. Also if Susan was meant to leave and never see Caspian again I don't see the point in throwing that in there. I wouldn't of even had it on my mind to begin with.

Starting with their story. Googly eyes, Susan stands up for Caspian but never makes eye contact with him until the Night Raid, Susan is ticked off at Caspian (over what?), Caspian tries giving horn back to Susan, Susan gives cheesy line that will never happen, Caspian stalks and rescues Susan, Caspian watches Susan fall six feet under her (oh no his darling is hurt 8-| ), Caspian gives irritating glances, Susan and Caspian swap cheesy lines "I wish we had more time together" (<--- aka for I never knew you, I wish we took the time to) "It never would of worked anyway" (<---Aka for sorry, i'm to good for you) "Why not" (<---AKA for dont leave me hanging. you're embarrassing me.) "Because I'm 1300 years older then you" (<--- AKA for bluffing) then she turns with a smile and kisses him, he didn't kiss her. <-- very romantic coughnotcough. If Susan really cared for Caspian she would not have kissed him after spilling out the honest truth of them never being together ever, by kissing him that's poor torcher towards Caspian and she shouldn't lead him on with guilt. instead of listening to her heart she Susan should have listened to her common sense. I felt as though she didn't learn anything in Narnia, which could be her foreshadow. Caspian shouldn't have been used as a guinea pig for Susan's foreshadowing.

There was no story behind them, nothing shown in their personalities to show how they felt for each other except Adamson's main reason, good looks X(

People shouldn't live by that. Love Stories should be like Avatar. Having no interest in the person to begin with, then friends, then fondness of ones personality in ways of life and doing things. That is how a love starts. Caspian and Susan had no time whatsoever because they depended on looks.

Why do you think Susan was mean to a geek?

I hope I got my points across

Two years later, I still don't own the DVD.

A NarniaWeb GMD mod who doesn't own the DVD? Is that possible? ;)

I think Prince Caspian was doomed from the beginning. LWW is a naturally cinematic book. PC followed next, but it is not a book you would ever read on it's own and think, "this needs to be a movie." Whole portions told in flashback? Lots of indecision about tactics and foresty paths? An all-around somewhat anticlimactic plot? Is this movie making material? Not really. They gave this book to a few screenwriters who work in a place called Hollywood where people think they've figured out what audiences want and then try to give it to them in as many similar, yet different ways as possible. I had hopes for the movie, but I'm not surprised it didn't come out that well.

I tried to be positive when it came out and was somewhat swept up in the excitement, but it was a disappointment. We spent all that time speculating, waiting on tenderhooks for a movie that ended up being a disappointment, a mediocre film in general that didn't even maintain the spirit of the book we all admitted was one of our least favorite of the series.

In the same manner, I've seen LWW 100+. 20 the first week it was out on DVD. I've watched PC maybe 10 times. Only once the first weeks it was out.

I would have to say I liked the way LWW was done and it was much more closer to the book than PC. They really broke that movie into little pieces ad destroyed it. If it was more closer to the book, it would have been nice and people would have gotten a better understanding of the movie.

I call it a big disappointment, maybe besides the special effects. I hope VODT is much better, that would be very nice!

I thought I was going to be the one with the huge rant. But completely agreed. I couldn't have said anything you said better myself.

I also agree with Kate. Ever since most of us saw the first footage of PC we knew it was doomed. It's ashame too because the first film was so high with great potential then fell flat.

LWW is a pretty good movie where, the more I watch it, the more flaws I notice. PC is a pretty good movie where, the more I watch it, the more strengths I notice.

The thing I love most about PC is pretty much in the film. The thing I love most about LWW isn't really.

This movie would have been a great adaptation if: There was more character development, Gave Peter and Susan something to actually learn from (Susan seems as if she always got what she wanted and didn't learn anything by the end, what was her purpose in anything except seducing Caspian and killing more people then everyone else?),

Peter's arc is very clear. He starts out thinking he can do it all himself. He has to learn humility. The Night Raid disaster is what wakes him up.

Movie-Susan learns that it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. When they are on their way to the How, by the campfire, Lucy asks her "You're happy to be here, aren't you?" Susan responds, "while it lasts." Susan is reluctant to get too excited about being back in Narnia, because she knows that soon enough, they'll have to go back. Through Caspian, she lets herself reattach to Narnia.

This was an interesting idea for Susan's arc, but the execution was just awful. Every scene with Susan and Caspian is eye-rollingly bad. Was it worth severely weakening the most important theme in the book (if not the entire series)?
