I am currently re-reading The Voyage of the Dawn Treader for the…oh, 10th time? Something like that. Anyway, I’ve come across several passages that I think the screenwriters could possibly have taken out of context or proportion in the film.
Firstly, Lucy's behavior in Trailer #1 and Clip #1 from Fun for the Whole Family Hour DVD strikes me as very odd.
Trailer #1: After they are brought aboard the Dawn Treader we see Lucy in Caspian's cabin, looking into a mirror with a sad and/or depressed face.
Clip #1: After we see Eustace writing in his diary, we see Lucy looking into a mirror again with a depressed and/or sad face.
These, to me, point to Lucy having self-image problems in Voyage. These, if I am correct, will add up to the Beauty Spell scene. It will really flesh out the story.
1. Chapter 5, talking about food. “Lucy for some reason tried to make up to me by offering me some of hers.” The screenwriters could certainly take this out of context and make it seem like Lucy is attempting to lose weight.
2. Chapter 5, talking about water. The storm has come and taken out most of their water. Only 8 ounces a day each. “Lucy gives me a little of her water ration.” A little, probably meaning more than or approximately one fourth of a cup. Screenwriters could take this out of context.
These passages, I see, could be taken out of context by the screenwriters. In my own opinion, however, it merely seems like Lucy is being nice to Eustace in these passages. Although, it does look as if they are trying to flesh out any places they can for the Beauty Spell scene. All of these little things will add up to that one scene, but after that I think the possible self-image problem will be wiped out.
Clip #2 of the Fun for the Whole Family Hour DVD: Eustace hoards the gold and places Lord Octesian's arm-ring on his own arm and Caspian and Edmund go looking for him, they find Eustace's shoe slightly burnt. Caspian says "I'm so sorry," thinking Eustace is dead. Then we see Gael, Lucy, and Drinian on the Dawn Treader looking at the island. They see a plume of smoke and flame. Drinian knows that it's a dragon.
I see where this is going. Remember when they where still filming and the assistant director shouts "And there's a dragon! And he's coming around the mast! And he LANDS on the mast! And they're firing arrows at him! Etc, etc." I think that in the movie everyone thinks Eustace is dead. Probably killed by the dragon they see (which is actually Eustace). Thus, they leave Dragon Island and DragonEustace behind. Then, when the dragon (Eustace) swoops in, they think it's trying to kill them, like it killed Eustace (not really). Somehow they realize that it's actually Eustace.
Eustace and Edmund's Talk, Chapter 7: "They went to the rocks and sat down looking across the bay while the sky got paler and paler and the stars disappeared except for one low down and near the horizon."
It's very short, but I can see how the screenwriters could take this and make it into Ramandu's Daughter being that bright star "low down and near the horizon." I would not mind that.
I will add any more passages to this thread if I come across them while re-reading Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
UPDATE: Chapter 13. "Now they could see that it was a tall girl (Lilliandil), dressed in a single long garment of clear blue which left arms bare." In the trailer and poster, to me, it looks like Lilliandil has more of a blueish glow around her rather than a white glow. This passage explains that reason.
Think about it. Think about how logical it all seems. Think about how they could have changed/fleshed out/added to/over-proportionized these passages. It makes sense. Please add your thoughts.
I met Georgie and Skandar AND saw the film in one evening.
Hm, I see your logic for the second two, but maybe the first one is reading into it a little too much. It would take some very major bias from the filmmakers looking for passages to back up the self-image change to perceive sharing rations as trying to lose weight. But yes, the second thing you mentioned seems to have taken a lot of what we knew from all the info and rumors and put it together into a logical theory. And the last one, yes we know Lewis was trying to simply provide an aesthetic picture, but someone reading about Ramandu later may perceive that to be a sign of of of the stars guiding them. Overall, some nice theories, and I hope that if they do prove to be true, that the filmmakers will have good reason for doing so.
I don't think the filmmakers would go so far as to take Lucy sharing food and water to Eustace out of context. Then again, you never know.
Its a good idea to expand on Lucy's self image problems, but as with anything, they shouldn't go too far. A few scenes that include Lucy looking sadly at her reflection is fine;it will build up to the magician's book scene. However, I don't want Lucy constantly whining about how she wants to look like Susan. And, no LucyxCaspian!!!
I have never said this before, but they shouldn't flesh things out too much. I have never said that about storytelling, however I think that Lewis was always simple and thats part of why Narnia is great. In the previous films, the filmmakers had great ideas to add, but they took somethings too far and ruined the subtlety and simplicity that were in the books. Everything in moderation as I always say.

I don't think there should be any LucyxCaspian, but if Lilliandil appears before the book scene, I wouldnt mind Lucy noticing how Caspian stares at Lilliandil and then gives a look of jealousy or sadness feeling that all the other girls (Susan included) seem prettier then her.
Winter Is Coming
In the dragon video I think Caspian and Edmund didn't get back to the ship until after the "That's no volcano" line, so I don't think they're leaving the island.

As for the shoe, I didn't think it was burnt, just a bit scuffed and very dusty from when it came off Eustace's foot when he tripped and fell over the edge. It's just a clue that he was there - so that Ed and Caspian know he was there and something has happened.
There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.

wow! I think you are right! that makes so much sense!
one thing, though, is the clip is not complete: they obviously took out some bits of the scene to shorten it for the Family package DVD thing. So when Drinian, MLG, and Lucy are talking about the "volcano" Edmund and Caspian may or may not be on board.....we don't know! but I think you are on to what might be the truth behind this scene! yay!

If the filmmakers make Lucy have a eating disorder it will just be absolutely, and literally not only sickening, but disgusting. How could anyone go to those limits and alter the source material to that extreme level?!?

^^ I don't think that's going to be in the movie.....

Oh i should hope not. I was going off of the original thread post, and (obviously) elaborating to the extreme.

You know I was reading VDT recently too, and I also thought that they would make that star Lillandil.

wow, I could seriously see that star being Lilliandil. Heck, I'm pretty sure that's how the scene is going to play out.

^We don't even know if they are going to use that scene in the movie.

True, Dinode, but if it is, I could somehow envision that being a scene of the film.
