I like this change. I think the transition into Narnia will look more realistic, and it works better visually than it would have if they did it like it was in the book.

I voted for "Yes, they needed this change to make it work." Every time I've thought about the original book entrance being put on screen, it hasn't seemed to flow quite right. I think it might look slightly odd and/or fake, where as this way that they're doing things is a more fluid transition into Narnia.

I voted "No, unnecessary change." With a little imagination, the book's entrance to Narnia would have worked fine. Prior to 2005 I wondered if the entrance through the wardrobe would look fake, but Adamson found a way to walk us through the wardrobe with Lucy so that we experienced it as she did. If Apted had chosen to, he could have found a way to make the growing picture work. I know that some people are still scarred from the BBC, but most things in the BBC version looked fake, so why single out the entrance to Narnia as something impossible to accomplish on screen?
I personally dislike their entrance to Narnia in this movie because it doesn't really answer the question: "How did they get to Narnia?" "Going through a picture frame which is a portal to another world," answers that question. "Some water spilled into the room," does not. There is also the question of: "What about the rest of the house?" Did it get flooded too? How about all of Cambridge? Is that somehow under the Narnian Ocean? Yes. & No. Well both, I guess. See? The paradox is too much. Audiences will wonder. Besides, the movie's way of entering Narnia is far too dangerous. "Aslan dropping them into the ocean next to the Dawn Treader" is one thing. "Aslan trying to drown them in the bedroom and when they escape then transporting them several meters underneath the sea in the direct path of the Dawn Treader" is something else.
If they swim into the picture, then I retract my comments and change my vote. If they swim out of the windows as was reported earlier, then I stand by my comments.

I think as it is magic by which the room is flooding, the rest of the house, won't really be affected, and when they get back home from Narnia, everything will be the way it was before they left, just like the train station in PC. I still think this is a necessary change, and I really like it!

I'm pretty sure digital cameras are necessary to shoot in 3D.
Yeah, but they didn't shoot in 3D...

I'm still confused by that, are the only 3D things going to be the CGI stuff? Hows that supposed to work?
Seeking comic book artist, PM for details.
I think more than just the CG elements will be in 3D, but I don't know much more about the transfer. I hope they make the painting scene stuff look really cool in 3D.

I voted "Yes, they needed to make this change to make it work". I liked how it was in the book, but it would have looked very... awkward and funny on a movie screen.

^^ yeah! my mom and I were talking about this and what I said was that it's one thing to read about them/the frame shrinking, but it would look awkward on screen. I love how the room sinks! it's so dramatic (I love drama!) and it's like they are really being yanked into Narnia and there's no turning back!

I agree, a growing painting would just look peculiar in a movie. It wouldn't "feel" like Narnia... more like Alice in Wonderland.
