Now the question is: how much does VDT need to make before Fox will green light simultaneously filming two movies?
It would probably need to make LWW money for Fox to consider doing that. LWW, even with it's gigantic success, did not cause Disney to film PC and VDT (although Disney was considering for a short amount of time filming and releasing the two films very close to each other).
They still need to take the series one step at a time. The drop from $700 million to $400 million burned up almost all of the box office cushion that we thought the series would have. The series managed to stay afloat dropping $300 million from film to film, but the box office cannot drop much more if we want to continue seeing big-budget Narnia films. Unfortunately, just because VDT made almost as much money as PC does not mean that SC/MN will rake in another $400 million. (After all, most NWers agree that PC would have made more money with a few tweaks such as a different release date, and then we would have seen a significant drop from PC to VDT instead of LWW to PC.)
Sharp drop, but we did it! Kudos to our friends in Japan!
I guess we are lucky that VDT did reach $400,000,000 or more under the circumstances. It looks like that some of the previous weekly takings got lost in the tsunami/earthquake, in the north. Data would have been lost in the power blackouts.
I wonder how such data and takings are tallied up anyway? If there is a central point which transmits such information and if that central point is in the north, then maybe there wasn't such a sharp drop, especially as the earthquake happened on a Friday.

Yes, however if PC had been recieved better in the first place, it would have lead to a number of factors that would have increased the amount of money VDT would have made. Disney may not have dropped out. That would probably have meant VDT would not have that "smell of failure" if you will. Also, it would have probably have been released earlier (I think the fact the movies are being released to far apart is the main problem.) More money may have been available for VDT if PC had made more money as well.
However I agree that a Narnia movie would have to make as much as LWW or more for them to consider filming more than one at a time.

It looks like the box office "floor" for the Narnia films is $400 million worldwide. That is not big enough of a "hit" for a studio (in this economy) to front development/production money for two films at once.
Remember, when New Line did that for LOTR it was a HUGE risk.
It's possible. Fox doesn't have that many box office hits, beside Avatar (next one is in 2014, couple of years away), Star Wars (not sure if they make any more of those, at least not in the near future), Ice Age and Alvin and the Chipmunks.
X-Men: The Last Stand cost 210 million $ and made 459 million
X-Men: Origins Wolverine cost 150 million $ and made 373 million.
Both far from big hits.
And First Class is about to get released in a couple of months and The Wolverine is about to start shooting for release next year.
Also, VDT has re-passed Black Swan's BOM numbers and is again Fox's #1 2010 release .
uh, Black Swan had only passed VDT domestically, where it still leads. VDT also won't pass it up again, domestically. Internationally, and therefore worldwide, VDT has always maintained its lead on Black Swan.
Congrats, VDT. This is good news.
I don't think they'll risk making two films at a time. If the series just continues, I'm happy.

Thats only cause Narnia has a built in fanbase worldwide. Its still surprising that Black Swan had originally made more domestically than VotDt since VotDT was part of a established fantasy series based off classic books whereas Black Swan was a R rated psychological horror film made at a low budget. But it seems that Black Swan got lots of views from teens and adults.

I know, I personally enjoyed Black Swan myself. All I was was trying to do was clear up that Narnia hadn't "re-passed" Black Swan like the other poster thought.
Maybe this is one of those rare cases where the better made movie does better at the box-office. (That comment was only half in jest - case in point: Transformers 2 - a chaotic mess but hugely popular).

Black Swan was a superior movie, got great reviews from critics, as well as good word of mouth. It also had lots of Oscar buzz surrounding it, particularly because of Natalie Portman's performance. VDT had the exact opposite. It is a rare; however, comforting case when the movies that deserve to do well financially actually do.

I wouldn't say that VDT had the "exact opposite." That would imply that word of mouth was terrible and the reviews were disasterous. It still had good word of mouth from the public and its reviews weren't bad.
From what I've read about Black Swan, it doesn't sound like the type of movie I would want to promote. Acting is only one quality of a movie (an important part, but not the sum total). It does, however, sound like the type of movie that Hollywood and critics would like.
Aside from that, it looks like the March Break is helping out the domestic numbers this week (low as they are at this point). I'm guessing domestic will finish around $104.3 million, but probably not over $104.4 million.
Does anyone know how DT is doing in Japan compared to PC at the same point in release??? Understandably there will be a huge impact from the disaster, and ofcourse if it meant the disaster never took place i would be happy if DT didnt make a cent... but i just wondered thats all?
In the grand scheme MOVIES ARE NOT IMPORTANT, people are important, Love one another and treat eachother how we would like to be treated ourselves!

VDT was trending ahead of PC up until the earthquake. Obviously that will no longer be the case.. But I am satisfied with VDTs box office run.
