NO! Dvd sales won't save the series.
Most people just heard about the movie this week due to Fox's poor advertising. If good wod of mouth is spread, it's likely that a lot of people would come during the second weekend (despite Tron:Legacy).
Winter Is Coming
It was a great movie. Honestly I liked it allot. My only criticism was that it was a little to short. Could have been 15-20 minutes longer. That's just my opinion. Seemed a little rushed. That being said it definitely deserved to make way more money. I guess people are not buying tickets right now. Or they are saving all there money for Tron. Oh well. That's life.
REALLY!?! I thought one of the reasons VDT was even made was from good PC DVD sales. Seriously though, I don't think going repeatedly with our families is going to put a dent in the box office gross.
Now, what if internationally it does very nice business? If it does "well" enough domestically in the end and shows even stronger overseas, will The Silver Chair get greenlit, or are they looking at domestic numbers alone?

If just one family does it, no. But if enough families decide to go on a repeat viewing or two, a dent can be made, but I won't hold my breath for it . But it all depends on how well its received by the public.

No. For a few weeks VDT was expected to open at around $40M in the US because buzz was building - trailers, the premiere, TV spots on several networks, billboards, ice palaces at malls, the nationwide promotional tour to over 4,000 faith leaders, all the individual charity events, movie chain promo events, and on and on and on. People just didn't buy a ticket. Perhaps what they saw from all that promotion didn't entice them.
Movie attendance is down big-time in the US, which doesn't help matters, but even with the 3D premium, fewer and fewer people are attending Narnia films. (Note: Harry Potter has the same issue.)
VDT now joins PC as the second Narnia film to open below expectations. Only LWW over-performed.

I've done the math and it won't make a dent.
Evey if every NarniaWebber on this forum (including all the empty acoounts with 0 posts) brought 50 people with them to go see the movie, it would only add $1 million to the box office. We would need more than 10 times that to make a legitimate dent.
EDIT: New numbers. Estimates have gone down. https://twitter.com/giteshpandya/status ... 1345013760
$23-$25 million is predicted now. I'm speechless.
(For comparison, LWW made $23 million opening day.)
I actually disagree that buzz was building. I never saw interviews on TV over it. I don't think they made enough use of Carie Underwood singing the song. She would perform it at concerts, but nothing was put in to tie it to the movie. Honestly, the whole marketing campaign seemed wrong. I remember watching the entertainment shows and seeing all of the interviews and discussions about movies coming soon. Voyage was nowhere to be seen. Tron, though, was highlighted many times. Even Prince Caspian had more buzz. I remember seeing it on upcoming big summer movies on entertainment shows. On billboards in New York. It was just sandwiched between allot of competition. I saw no billboards in New York for Voyage. No interviews on big shows. No hype saying this is the holiday movie you have to see. I honestly think allot of people didn't even know it was coming out.
I have to agree with Tarquin. I don't know about other cities/countries, but I haven't noticed a lot of buzz in Canada for this movie (and I live in a large city). Most of my friends didn't even know a new Narnia film was coming out. I looked for articles in the newspaper ever day for the past few weeks and noticed next to nothing about the film. Yogi Bear and Tangled had tones of advertisements. Everyone I know knows about Tangled and wants to see it. I didn't see any interviews or anything on shows like ET Canada. The only buzz I have seen is here on Narniaweb. I only stared seeing trailers on t.v in the last week before the film. Potter did the same thing but Narnia does no have the fanbase and buzz Potter has to expect success with such poor marketing.

I guess narnia is dead then *sigh*
I am so sad. I remember the joy of reading LWW and then getting to watch it a few months later. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was the same for PC. I was sooooo happy! And now it's all over (sorry, but I really have no hope.)
I agree with Josh that they took too long between the movies. Most people thought Narnia was over. They didn't even know more Narnia films were being made.

Thanks Walden Media for going as far as you can
I'm with Tarquin as well, I stopped seeing TV spots two weeks ago...
I'm still praying like mad... My only hope now is that it was a bad week at the box office, and that the numbers won't drop maybe even go up next week. To put this into perspective... myself and six of my freinds and family will be unable to see the movie until Fri the 17 at the earliest. I've heard of similar accounts as well, one person was planning on going with a party of 25 on the 17th. Another NWer couldn't make it until the middle of this week...
The only thing we can do right now is pray that next week is better...
and maybe start petitioning for SC to be made, it might not work, but it's worth a try... it's worked to an extent in the past, in earned Star Trek an extra season.
I'm also extremely baffled at this, from my understanding the 3-D wasn't bad, and yet other films which had terrible effects did better than this. I agree to that the marketing could have been better...a lot better. I'm sure mediocre reviews and lots of speculation on the fansites didn't help either. Was it the massive changes with the crew? Maybe we all just set our expectations to high, and so fate has turned and is teaching us a lesson .
What really kills me is that if they don't finish it, then MN, LB, and HHB will never get adapted. Which is an abesolute shame... HHB is probably the easiest to adapt of the entire series, LB won an award, can't remember what, but I know it was something... And MN ties in so beautifully with the first... At least they gave us hints, the Wardrobe in LWW (2005), HHB in one DVD special feature, elements of SC in VDT.
If they ever try to adapt the chronicles again, maybe they should go in the "Chronilogical" order then if nothing else we'll get MN... Maybe what they really should do is combine them all into one huge movie and release that in three or four parts, like HP 7 except bigger...
Here's to praying that it's not dead... Anyone know how to make a petition? Especially like on the internet or something... I'll do it if I can figure out how...
"The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." -John Muir
"Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down
Who would have thought after the huge success of LWW in 2005 that the Narnia movie series would end like this.

One person's experience does not a trend make. The audience that watches the entertainment shows you speak of is not exactly what Fox/Walden was aiming for. They are very low-impact.
People who watch the box office professionally expected a much larger opening for this film. This scenario is PC all over again, only with even smaller numbers. When two films from the same franchise significantly underperform with two different marketing strategies, you have to start asking if the problem is the marketing, or something else.
I remember seeing PC and LWW on those entertainment show though. Again I don't know about other people's experiences of the marketing, but mine, along with many people I know (who live in other places) was very limited.
