I think that VotDT is going to do great in Japan! PC did well there for one thing, and VotDT has done well overseas in other places! :D :D :D

A pretty decent weekend domestically brings the total up to 103,462,695 (according to BOM).

I believe there was a special premiere last weekend, but the official release in Japan is this Friday.

VDT (or Aslan and the Magical Islands =)) in Japan) would have to make more than $40 million in Japan to beat PC's worldwide total... possible, but unlikely.

Let's see - PC made 8,943,448 in South Korea and 27,704,112 in Japan. Tron Legacy: 4,337,786 / 25,155,442. VDT - 10,010,532 / and who knows? but I'm optimistic taking into account that LWW made 57 million and VDT is performing better than PC in non-English speaking countries.

I have no doubt at all it will make 400 million, but the real goal is PC's box office.

Besides, it is a 3D release and people in Asia just love it, so it really counts over there.

Another important thing - as far as I know there are no direct competitors in Japan on coming weekend and possibly the next one, too. But I don't know this for sure.

Anyway, we all have to wait (and to keep our fingers crossed, of course ;) ). There's less than a week left!

Kind regards,

Pavel Rezvushkin

VDT only dropped -0.5% from last week! (Counting President's Day, it increased +29.8%.) It's probably in some dollar theaters.

I definitely keep my fingers crossed. :) And VDT is still in cinemas, also in other countries than Japan. It had a decent weekend in the US. I have high hopes!

Dear Faroegirl,

I think VDT needs to make 38-39 million in Japan to beat PC. Is it able to make 2,200,000 in dollar theaters in the USA and remaining days in release in Venezuela? You say it is still in the cinemas in other countries - well, great news! So I think this number is achievable and if we go with it the VDT needs to make 39 million in Japan.

Assuming a huge success in Venezuela, we can raise the bar to 3,200,000. Well, unfortunately, that's probably unrealistic :( I guess the real box office will stay somewhere in between these two numbers.

39 million in Japan? I definitely think the PC's box office is on target.

Kind regards,

If Voyage Of The Dawn Treader can make 19 million $ in China, it can make 40 in Japan.

But Japan is a more democratic and less government -orientated society.

There are a lot more people in China than Japan.

But Japan's populace is a lot more technologically advanced and has a higher standard of living. Japan only has a fraction of China's population but has a bigger box office market due to more people having the disposable income to do things like going to the movies. Similar to India (another HUGE country).
China's box office market is growing quickly and will eventually be the biggest international market, however that is still years away. But for now, Japan is still the king of international box office numbers.

But Japan is a more democratic and less government -orientated society.

Being Chinese, I can tell you that the government doesn't really care what we watch UNLESS the film indirectly (or directly) mock or belittle the government. The government will also ban anything too sexually explicit or violent which VODT doesn't fit anywhere.

That said, most Chinese I know sees film as waste of time. Instead, we study for our free time. X(

Also, not sure if anyone posted this but it seems that Narnia has broken Fox's box-office drought: http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3055&p=s.htm

You guys probably posted this already but I can't help but hope that this should get Fox's attention. Narnia might not be seen as an unfruitful enterprise after all. :D
