Over $400 is probable.

Eclipsing PC? Very, very slim chance. If I were to put money on it, I'd bet no.

I have no idea how this works or who decides these things or why, but I really don't like the Japan release date, or understand why you'd release so late in the second biggest market. The movie has come and gone everywhere else, and there is something to be said for "global buzz."

My feeling is that to release in Japan so late, and so soon before the release of the Region 1 DVD, is going to cost the movie at least a few million in Japan.

I DO like how there keeps being a new hurdle to jump though, and how there's always at least a little sweat with each of them! It keeps things interesting.

First it was 66% thing, then it was crossing $100 mil, then it was locking up #12 on the 2010 worldwide grosses leaderboard, then it was beating Journey to the Center of the Earth domestic. Next it's $400 WW, and then $419!

A quick related question: (since we are on the topic of money and a possible SC greenlight) does anyone know if DVD/Blu-Ray sales of LWW & PC have gone up significantly since VDT was released? If so, that is yet another reason for Fox & Walden to continue the series. SC's theatrical release will produce a small surge in VDT Blu-Ray sales, and MN's theatrical release will produce a small surge in VDT & SC Blu-Ray sales, etc.

I just checked BOM and yes we have beaten Journey to the Center of the Earth's final domestic take, and we are just a few thousand dollars away from beating The Golden Compass's final worldwide take. I'll be updating our landmark chart as soon as it does.

Yes. And shouldn't there be concern for piracy? I know if I was living in a country where a film was releasing worldwide more than two months before I got it, that would be a very difficult wait. I hope not a large percentage will resort to illegal copies.

Movies do this sort of thing all the time. If VDT was ever going to do great business there, it will still do great business there.

3D is very popular in Asian countries, so that should help in combating some of the piracy issues.

I notice that Area 4 DVD's don't seem to be coming out yet. I've burned my fingers beforehand, buying Area 1 DVD's from Amazon, when it is area 4 that is wanted here. They work for a while then a new DVD player rejects them. What sort of area is Japan? I suspect we won't get our proper VDT DVD's until it is finished there. And I hope there will be a 3D edition.

Could you please say when is the release date for Venezuela?

I don't know for sure. I know that Prince Caspian was a popular item to borrow until someone busted the DVD and it had to be withdrawn. The original DVD edition has been for sale on and off for some time at the local supermarket, which wouldn't be true if it weren't making any sales along the line. I'll check next time I'm there whether it is a one disc or a two disc version. This time an equivalent copy of LWW is also sitting alongside it, which I didn't see beforehand. These are not special editions.

When I asked at Christmas for a blu-Ray Prince Caspian I was told it was sold out. That store didn't have any ordinary Prince Caspian DVD's either.

Japan is Region 2 when it comes to DVD, just like UK and some other European countries.

VDT is very nearly at 102 Million domestically. And here I was thinking it would barely scrape past 100. I suppose 102 IS scraping for some films, but anyhow ;)

I think that VDT is going to do really well when it hits the discount theaters big time. We have a popular one near my work and it should open there this Friday or next. Plus it will get one last boost from the President's Day holiday on Feg. 21st. So I will be a little optimistic and predict that VTD will finish with at least $106 million in the USA.

Foregn totals are looking good (BOM VDT Summary link) so reaching $400 million or even a bit more is looking better now. :)

And it passed by quite a bit! It was not a scrape of 10,000 bucks or so. It is over 100K. And by the end of the week, it will likely be at 102M. And by the end of its run, it may reach 105M. Which is close to 68% in domestic revenue alone.

Dear Fox and Walden Media and C.S. Lewis Estate and everyone else involved:

The news are good. Money talks. Narnia is productive. PLEASE greenlight The Silver Chair.

Thanks,

Yours truly.

ooh, that's a good letter! are you going to send it? :D

So it looks like VDT has quietly sneaked up to Golden Compass's worldwide total, only difference is that VDT has yet to premiere in Venezuela and Japan. Hopefully this movie doesnt crash and burn in Japan.

Yeah I agree. Japan is key. That's why I can't understand them releasing it so late. It doesn't make sense. With movie Piracy, worldwide buzz etc. it could seriously effect VDT earnings. I see it making less then Caspian because of this. Which means that it may not hit 400 million. I was convinced it would up to now. However, the Japan release date is key. Maybe they have some big holidays or school breaks that we don't know about that this release date is taking advantage of. Other then that, it just doesn't make sense.

Aha! Aha! VDT has just passed Golden Compass, on $372.3 million worldwide. :D Of course the bigger the US domestic total is, the better chances to get SC greenlit.

Now if only the foreign totals can equal those of Golden Compass.

I don't know why Japan is releasing Narnia 3 so late, but the LWW release there was also in February [2006] - 2 months after the December premiere in most other places. I don't know how Japan's entertainment world works. There must be a reason... :-
