I wish it wasn't losing so many theaters so quickly. I tried to go see it this weekend and couldn't. I believe that it will end with around 103 million. I was hoping for 105 million, minimum. That is after the first few opening weeks. Does anyone know about how much we can expect from the discount theaters?

We can only expect a few million from discount theaters. I'm guessing it will end at $105 million. The Princess and the Frog is a film grossing almost exactly like VDT and that movie did $104 million.

A big article on Fox and finally getting another movie to pass $100m: Narnia.
As usual there is some negative (domestic), but there is also positive. (international).

But at least it is a positive article overall. Title is positive. Another big positive for FOX- Narnia brings in the money. Thirteen months without a blockbuster is quite a bit, especially for such a major studio. But Narnia broke the spell.

Now we just need it to make 102M so that Narnia is the absolute top Walden franchise and there is even more certainty of its earning power.

Which we will do! :)

I don't know if $100 million is the magic number for a blockbuster or not, but I haven't thought of Narnia as a blockbuster or the movie that has finally broken Fox's dismal spell of low box office grosses. Date Night, a movie also produced by Fox and released a few months ago, made $98.7 million. VDT has made only $2 million more than that, and had a budget that was three times as large. It would seem to me that Date Night was much more of a spell breaker than VDT has been. :-?

Not having 100 million films for a long period of time is just embarrassing for a huge studio like Fox. Even if Date Night is more profitable, it didn't really help Fox's company image at all. VDT will help more in that regard.

With two new movies opening this weekend, plus some Oscar contenders likely expanding, I'll be surprised if VODT can retain half of its theater count. Even though children's films do well at discount theaters, you really can't expect more than $2 million from them.

Plus, Date Night's foreign gross was only $53 million, for a worldwide of $152 mil. While I realize Date Night is still more profitable in terms of ratios and all, that is a pretty big difference from VDT's current $366, possibly to be $400 million!

I've no idea, but at least VDT is still on show. VDT isn't showing locally as of the previous weekend. The movie programs at that time also showed Megamind was on the way out, but not Tron:legacy which still had its 4 screenings. VDT was still showing at other theatres, however. This weekend, when I looked, I couldn't see either Megamind or Tron: legacy to be showing in the local theatre, even though both films were trumpeted over VDT in Australia's box office.

Meanwhile, can we at least look forward next week to VDT passing Golden Compass in the Worldwide stakes?

I just have a question: Does PC's final total of $420 include the money made from DVD sales?

actually it doesn't. PC made $419.5 in theaters across the world. Not including what came later from DVD sales.

Gee, I learn something new about the boxoffice business everyday! Thanks for letting me know. :p
So I guess PC made just under $500 including DVD sales then?

Something along those lines. $420M + $78M from DVD.

Yes, the $78 million are from estimated DVD sales. I did keep track of Prince Caspian's DVD rental amounts back when IMDB and BOM had rental charts. (Why they don't now I know not).

Anyway, a conservative estimate as of April 12th, 2009 was about $31 miilion. Plus I remember the $15 million television deal (I believe it was with USA Network) that PC had. And those numbers are just for the USA.

If VDT can perform similarly or better in the ancillary revenue streams, that would help a lot with getting another Narnia movie greenlit.
