Fox greenlight rumor: all I did was share what was posted on AC's wall (a comment) on Facebook. Maybe it's ridiculous. Maybe it isn't. I have two co-workers with excellent Fox contacts. So I'll ask them about this. :)

@GrizzledFish: check out my profile next to my posts. I'm a girl. ;)

China BO: I emailed BOM and recommended Film Business Asia. I don't know if they have this source and have rejected it, or if they simply don't know about it (which seems impossible). Anyway, FBA looks like a reputable source for China's box office. I don't know why BOM doesn't use it. :-

UPDATE/EDIT: Website for Argentina's BO. Dawn Treader is #3 this week, with 729,619 total ($ or local?). http://www.ultracine.com.ar/ar/index.php

Someone posted this on AslansCountry (Facebook) yesterday, when we announced Fox's VDT website for Japan.

$400 Million Worldwide is the number that Fox is looking at for this film. That is what they want. I have been told by a friend who works on the film Development side for Fox that If this Film Reaches $400 Million Worldwide that 20th Century Fox will Green Light both The Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy. Plus once they do Green Light The Silver Chair I have been told that Fox has a December 5th 2012 release date planned. (found on Narnia Web. Here's hoping!)

Is this true? And the NW part: where is that? :-

I think I can answer this. A few weeks ago I was looking through VDT's imdb message board. After reading the message board I posted the following in this thread:

I know you can't believe everything you read on the web, but I was looking through Voyage of the Dawn Treader's message board on imdb and someone posted the following.

imdb user wrote:

Since I posted that there has been some debate on the validity of the imdb user's claim. The above post was moved the the Rumors thread.
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2229&start=32

After it was moved to the Rumors thread Narnia_Fan12 wrote:

I emailed Fox, and here's what they sent me... "Sorry, it is not a statement we made." so... I guess that guy doesn't know what he's talking about?

I never meant to spread a rumor as fact. I should've stated more clearly that I wasn't certain the imdb claim was true. I was repeating what I read on the message board and I am sorry for all the confusion.

@Aslan: you're not the cause of all the confusion. I didn't even know this rumor had already been discussed here on NW. I was just giving someone's comment on our Facebook wall. Don't blame yourself!

Two ironies:
1. The quotes are the same. So the person who commented on our wall is also the IMDb user? :-
2. I discovered the rumors thread, and my co-worker's response in it, about the same time you posted your response! [Cause I asked him about it on FB.] My co-worker, with a Fox contact, is Narnia_Fan12 = Cyclops on AslansCountry.com. :)

LOL conversation! Thanks for the post, Aslan!

Box Office Mojo just posted this:

"'Gulliver,' 'Persia,' 'Narnia' Rank Among the Big Botches of 2010"
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3051&p=.htm

8-|

So this movie, which is poised to make about as much worldwide as its predecessor, on a much smaller budget, and outperforming it in many territories, and which is Fox's highest-grossing film of 2010, not to mention the 12th highest-grossing film worldwide for 2010 is a "big botch?"

Do these pundit-types expect that just because LWW made truckloads of money that each Narnia movie would do comparable business? Narnia isn't Harry Potter! It's not claiming to be or trying to be!

At worst, VDT fell somewhat short of Fox's expectations. It was by no means a "botch." It doesn't belong among these other titles, in fact it SHOULD be in the "Not As Bad As Their Reputation" section of this article, which it may have been if they'd thought about it a little more carefully.

Within that very section they mention The Wolfman, which cost $150 million to make and made $62 million. And they say it did "relatively well". Huh?

This really irks me. I don't like a major authority site like BOM reinforcing the flat-out incorrect perception that Narnia 3 was a failure. That does not help our cause.

I'll tell you, part of the reason I want TSC to be made so badly is to see all of these "I guess that's it for Narnia" naysayers eat their words!

Grizzledfish... I totally agree, I mean included in thier report were titles like... Robin Hood... 200mill to make, and only made 105mill domestic, and only 216mill foreign, but was refered to as a relative box office success... or
Prince of Persia... again 200mill to make, and only made 90mill domestic, and 244mill foreign... i mean these are BIG budget movies, and Narnia has been put on the same list as them, when Narnia had a fraction of thier production budget, and has blown thier numbers out of the water...!!! and is still going! Whats up with the folk at BOM... they have a personal problem with some things, and try thier absolute hardest to force thier opinions onto others!!! they should not be in a job like that if they are not going to be prefessional about it in my opinion!!! I could only hope that most people will not take these WRONG (no question about it) rteports at face value!!! its pretty sad that they have to be like that really, i mean theyve put movies like 'jackas3d, and the town' on thier most impressive list,,, sure these movies were very low budget, and therefore made a good profit, but you could hardly call thier box office runs impressive... someone needs to politely have a word in the ear of a certain 'Brandon Gray' over at BOM, he has a seriouse need to do as much damage to narnia as possible! Sorry for rambling, it just really gets to me thats all :)

That all said things are looking good for VDT
Domestic: $99,134,935
Worldwide: $356,721,935

and more coming... we should be able to expect Big numbers from Japan, and still another good haul expected from total international numbers! Im gonna put VDT final tally at around 417mill??? possible???

In the grand scheme MOVIES ARE NOT IMPORTANT, people are important, Love one another and treat eachother how we would like to be treated ourselves!

I had a feeling that person was referring to the discussion of the IMDB stuff. Silly Facebook rumor-poster, never believe anything IMDB posts about release dates. :P

I wouldn't worry about whatever BOM posts. The bias should be obvious to all and besides, the amount of movie-goers who even bother to visit film sites is actually very small. If it were a major newschannel or newspaper constantly ragging on a franchise, then I would be worried.

The only thing positive about today's Box Office Mojo article is that it indicated that VDT WILL make 100M at the box office. The implication was that none of the other movies mentioned did make 100M. So again, VDT is not a flop.

And I still am in disbelief that a Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe fared so poorly in theatres. But then, I liked the 2004 King Arthur movie- yet it flopped.

BOM's articles shouldn't be taken as fact. They are opinion articles, and are pretty much subjective, as is most things when it comes to movie criticism, etc. However, I tend to agree with their opinion in this matter. VDT will barely scrape a profit on its box office run alone. In that sense, it is somewhat of a disappointment considering the expectations. I wouldn't call it a full out flop though. Films like "The Town" and "Jackass3D" both made over twice their budget in the domestic box office alone; "The Town" made $144.5 million worldwide on a budget of only $37 million. That's impressive, especially for a movie like "The Town," which isn't a blockbuster by any means. The same can said for films like "The Social Network" and "Black Swan." Their box office runs were much more impressive than VDT's, no matter how you look at it.

No, Narnia 3 shouldn't be in the disappointments. Look at Robin Hood. This won't make a profit, and if anything, will lose money. The Wolfman is the same way. And they are saying that these movies aren't as bad as people are making them out to be? They are saying that they aren't flops because people over-hyped them, including the studios, who gave them crazy budgets. Then isn't this the reason that they are flops? I need to get out my dictionary, because this author is making absolutely no sense. And also, Narnia 3 will make more money than Tron. And Narnia is a bomb and Tron is nowhere to be seen on this article? :-o /:)

Lets go SC!

I think it's a disappointment to those who believed the movie should do as well as LWW. That is a bit of a silly expectation of course. A reasonable expectation would have been around PCs gross, and this is around where the value will be. It is a bit of a disappointment for the domestic market, but it is doing well enough overseas and I can't see any way that it won't make a profit. Robin Hood, on the other hand cost 200(+) million production + 120 million advertising, which is 65 million more than VDT, and it grossed 37 million less internationally (and climbing). To call that "not so bad" and VDT a "botch" borders on the ridiculous...

Wolfman was god-awful. I prefer even Van Helsing.
Robin Hood was a good film but too similiar with the other historical movies released the last decade, it wasn't anything special. But i enjoyed it, after Voyage Of The Dawn Treader and How To Train Your Dragon my favourite movie of 2010.
Looking at the Domestic gross Narnia 3 is a big dissappointment, total gross is quite good. It doesn't belong in the flop-list. I thought with the winter-release and back-to-magic marketing it would make 150-160 Domestic, a bit more than Prince Caspian. Where did all those fans of the previous Narnia movies go in the USA? It's not like there were many other good movies.

The reason many see VDT as a disappointment is because it was meant to be the film that would get the franchise back on track. Unfortunately that did not happen. The fact that it opened to less than half of what Prince Caspian opened to, means a lot of the fan base has left. That is disappointing.
