The thing with Tron is that while the boxoffice isn't that spectacular, they get a huge deal of money with merchandise (toys) i've heard.
I hope they stay ahead of Tron: Legacy.

Unless box office mojo isn't up to date it seems Yogi Bear still has it's whole international run ahead of it. So comparing it to VDT doesn't make much sense at the moment. If I am wrong please correct me :)

Yeah, there's a lot of Tron franchise out there.

If I was a Fox exec, I would have been making a deal with Hasbro to make a huge toy replica of the Dawn Treader and the main crew to go with it ;) .

I would buy something like that :p

I'm watching for VDT to pass up Due Date and then be #26 for 2010. Its been a slow crawl but I think it will happen.

As much as a $400 million worldwide total seems to be a sure thing for the next film in the series, I don't think we can rely on that too closely. Granted, VDT's production budget was reasonably lower than The Golden Compass' but that film made an impressive amount of international gross for a $372 million worldwide total and the series was not continued. That was three years ago and the economy was in a more stable place. Will $30 million more for VDT secure the next entry? I'm choosing to stay neutral on that.

The Golden Compass is not a good example because the reason it did not get a sequel was because New Line did not get any money from it's international run as they only distributed domestically, where it bombed. In the case of VDT, Fox is distributing internationally as well as domestically.

And then New Line went bankrupt, or at least very close to it, and got absorbed by Warner Bros. I mean, what was New Line thinking? A $180 M budget for a movie that they were only distributing in America? That would have to make at least $360 M in the US alone! Did they really think that would happen? :-o

But no, we should get a sequel. Nothing is guaranteed, but this is Fox's biggest movie of the year. And with a budget of about $120 M, SC would easily make a profit. How could it not? It would have to make less than $250 M worldwide, and does anyone really think that that will happen?

Lets go SC!

This is true. Golden Compass was so expensive for New Line Cinema that they sold off their international distribution rights to finance the movie, so they had to make a huge domestic box office number to make their money back. They couldn't count on the international numbers at all for profit.

More than 100M, I want it to reach 102M. Why? Because that way, Narnia will definitely be Walden Media's top franchise. If it is the most lucrative one, then the more reason to greenlight SC.

$102 million is a done deal. It'll pass $100 this weekend, and should still have a couple million left to make after it hits discount theaters and such.

@martindale: I agree that $102M (or at least $100M) "is a done deal." Who knows, the film may be at $100M by Friday. :)

MundoNarnia has excellent numbers on VDT in China! :)

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader achieved an excellent result in its second weekend of exhibition in China. Last week, debuted in third place, surpassing the box office but the film Prince Caspian, with almost double: U.S. $ 6.35 million. And last weekend, climbed to the position of second place with almost the same box office the previous week - $ 6.22 million. In total, U.S. $ 12.57 million raised.

With that in just two weekends, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader topped the box office of Prince Caspian TOTAL (U.S. $ 12.52) in China in 2008 and by far, the box office of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe clothing (U.S. $ 7.80). And you're sure it will surpass the box office total of two movies: from 20.32 to 12.57 = 7.75 (entendeu!?). With over five weeks in theaters available, that number will be easily overcome.

Someone posted this on AslansCountry (Facebook) yesterday, when we announced Fox's VDT website for Japan.

$400 Million Worldwide is the number that Fox is looking at for this film. That is what they want. I have been told by a friend who works on the film Development side for Fox that If this Film Reaches $400 Million Worldwide that 20th Century Fox will Green Light both The Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy. Plus once they do Green Light The Silver Chair I have been told that Fox has a December 5th 2012 release date planned. (found on Narnia Web. Here's hoping!)

Is this true? And the NW part: where is that? :-

I've never seen any report on here that there's an official release date. I believe there's a date on IMDB that is unofficial that has been mentioned a few times on the forums, but that's it.

VotDT is doing so well in China! I think that once it comes to Japan, we'll be sure for SC! :D

I don't come on here much, but I think VDT is doing ok and hopefully will make it to 400 at least. :)

As for that report, 220Christian, I doubt I can believe that yet. For one thing, the movie makers have been struggling to decide whether SC or MN will be made first, so I think if they did greenlit two Narnia movies, it might more likely be SC and MN than SC and HHB (although I wouldn't mind either chosen first!). Second, I really doubt they would've chosen a release date yet for SC. SO, this person might be right, but I need to see to believe before then. ;)
