According to someone at boxofficemojo, VDT is now out of theaters in Australia and came in with a gross below that of PC.. unfortunate, as we needed VDT to outperform PC internationally to see VDT hit $400 million. I am aware of some markets that are outperforming PC but we can't count on those few markets to 'carry the load' for the other ones. Hopefully Australia will be one of the only countries to perform less than PC.

Not quite. I went to see it on Saturday morning and it will go for a couple of days longer. They don't release new films until Thursday here. Considering that the film was produced largely in Australia, it could have been marketed so much better and so I'm not surprised at the lower earnings.

Officialy VDT is at $94.5 million as of Sunday for domestic USA. (According to BOM) Link: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

It should lose hundreds of its current 2,814 USA theaters this Friday.
But the good news is that it is heading into the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. So even wit around 2,000 theaters, it should get a nice boost on that Monday and should reach or pass $100 million by the following weekend.

To contrast with LWW, after 31 days it had $247,777,824 USA total with no 3D and lower ticket prices. : At lease it has been outperforming PC the last 2 weekends. Too bad it didn't have PC's opening weekend; the extra $31 million would be huge right now.

Well that's good to know. I think marketing better would have helped here in the States too.

An interesting and relevant article from today's Hollywood Reporter.

Title:

Subtitle: "PricewaterhouseCoopers research shows exhibitors might have to do away with high ticket premiums consumers don't want to pay."

Link:

The higher 3D prices are already having an affect on attendance. I think VDT's USA attendance and box office are down because of too many 3D screens. Just my personal opinion but there does seem to be some evidence for it from that article. :-$

Corazon Bandido- I mean making 60% of the total cost in domestic profits. 60% of 155M is 93M. Which is what we have made domestically so far. Officially, a movie needs to make at least 60% profit domestically in order to not be considered a box office bombs. Some movies cough Waterworld cough may have made less than 60% domestically- but still made enough money worldwide to recover investment and even make a bit of a profit. Others, such as Cutthroat Island, did not make anywhere near enough globally overall period. This is what I mean.

So VDT can NOT be considered a flop. It has made over 60% domestically. Globally, it has made quite enough to recover production costs, marketing costs, and even make a profit. So it certainly cannot be considered a failure in any way.

This is something that I was unaware of. Thank you Aravis for that valuable little bit of information :)

I think attendance would be down in Queensland, Australia, for last few weeks due to extreme flooding in half of the state.

Does anyone know how VDT is doing in China? I think it was released there this past weekend.

I think it made a little over 5 million, which is really quite good. PC made 12.5 million in China and LWW made 7.8 million. Looks like VDT should make at least 15 million! :)

Can't wait to see how it does in Japan!

The way things go we mightn't know until next week how exactly VDT did in China. I think it should be okay though. Nothing in it anyone there would object to, really.

Certainly we are praying for you. I've also posted a thread in the prayers forum for this reason. And yes, it is the worst flood we've seen. Even whatever dams you have up there don't seem to be holding it back.

Does anyone know what the same statistics were for Prince Caspian? It had a production budget of $225 million and it made $141,621,490 dollars in USA and $419,651,413 worldwide. Surely it made 60% of its production costs.

Ok srry this is a bit belated, it took a bit of a nose-dive but that was expected, and it's still hugging PC's line, but with better drops.

All graphs track VDT from opening day til 1/9/10. The last tracks LWW and PC til 1/9/05 and 6/16/08 respectively.
