Taken straight from box office mojo's weekly review...

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader grossed $13.3 million in its fourth week for a total of $89.9 million. While it has fallen short of its predecessors, it's a lock to become distributor 20th Century Fox's first $100 million movie since Avatar passed that mark in December 2009.

This is another reassuring piece, i sure hope theyre right! Fingers crossed :-s

They dropped VDT completely from my local theatre and the other theatres neighboring have reduced showtimes to the early morning and late afternoon. I'm discourged by this. :( The 3D version still has enough screens at one theatre though, though I can't decide if I want to see it badly enough for a 4th time in 3D format... :(

I hope you will consider watching it in 3D .. Personally, I loved it! If nothing else, you will probably never get that chance again once it's out of theaters. And if you don't like it, then at least you gave 3D a chance and you can skip it for future movies.

The Box Office Derby on BoxOfficeMojo.com predicts that VDT will make $5.9 million this weekend. That would be an excellent drop...I hope they're close.

That estimated $5.9m figure is similar to other estimates I've seen on the web today. Based on these predictions, my own guesses for the following week are as follows;

Current total $89.93m
Fri - Sun (7-9 Jan) = $5m
Mon - Thurs (10-13 Jan) = $2m
Fri - Mon (14-17 Jan - inc Martin L King's birthday) = $5m
TOTAL = $101m+. Time to break open the champagne bottles.

I do hope you are right. It is already Saturday arvo here, and when I look at BOM, I have to think that probably you have passed the $90 million mark already, since when they get here, they are the results of the day before yesterday.

I've just come back from my 5th visit to VDT. :-$ The staff are beginning to recognise me. :-o My family think I am er 8-} to visit any movie 5 times. After a long time in which the papers never mentioned the film, apart from the film guide, the same original Daily Telegraph review that VDT is 'marooned in the Deathly Shallows' was repeated in today's film guide which showed that there was only one screening for VDT, in 3D.

I've sometimes been to a movie where either I or my family were the only film-goers present, not always by choice. Merely in one case because the turkey of a movie was the only suitable movie for all of us to watch in a country town on what was an otherwise memorably miserable and uncomfortable Christmas Eve. I'm happy to report that at no time did I experience this sort of situation for VDT. Even today, the second smallest audience so far when I have attended, had at least 20 people present, all of whom seemed happy with the movie. And this time, unlike the unfortunate Bathurst business, there were no mishaps.

I expect that this is the last week I will be able to see the movie until the DVD comes out, and hopefully the DVD will be in 3D in Blu-ray. Strangely, big selling movies like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland haven't issued 3D Blu-ray DVD's to my knowledge.

I also found out that if I moved to the back of the theatre I found the 3D effects were far more effective than where I normally choose to sit whilst watching a 2D film.

I've seen advertising for Alice in Wonderland on 3D Blu-ray. It's out there somewhere...

I've also found 3D to be more effective further back.

Ack, that's an awful number. I hate to think this, but I think $100 M is as high as possible right now. I just hope it gets there.

Lets go SC!

I was thinking the same thing too... thats more than a 50% drop. Ouch! The worse part is that estimates are usually higher than the actual numbers. Lets hope it doesn't drop too bad. But at least $100 million domestic is still in reach.

A bit of good news though...in its 5th weekend out, Prince Caspian made just over $3 million, so if VDT makes $4-5 million thats better than PC. And entering its 5th weekend, PC still made an additional $9 million for the remainer of its box office run, so im going to guess that VDT barely makes $100 million by the time its all said and done (since right now VDT is almost at $90 million).

It's going to get there. Next week is MLK weekend. Although VDT has mysteriously dropped harder than LWW, GC and Eragon this past weekend, making an additional $6 million or so after a $4.5 weekend is a drop in the bucket.

Another good movie to compare VDT is Princess and the Frog. That movie was released at the same time as VDT in 2009, and that movie made an additional $15 million after this point today. So I'm pretty sure VDT will get to $100 million.

I don't think that it will finish under $100 M, I just think that now, with this completely awful weekend, it might barely scrape by. I think it locked up $100 M with its increase last weekend, but now it will be pretty close. Let's just hope we right the ship next weekend, which is usually a pretty good one for holds! :p

Lets go SC!

DO you think that VDT's grosses in China and Japan will be enough to greenlight silver chair?

CHINA
LWW 12 Million
PC 12.5 Million

JAPAN
LWW 57.3 Million
PC 27 Million

So hopefuly VDT can pull at least 10 million in CHINA, and at least 25 in Japan. SO that would add 35 million to the foreign total, making it 248 million foreign + 90 Million domestically = 338. Maybe if it has good hold overs in other markets (russia and Germany seem to be doing well) then it can greenlight SC. I really hope that it can break 400 Million world wide.

I am seeing VDT for the 7th time tonight.

Some people are concerned because of The Golden Compass making so much globally but not being greenlit.

However, they are two very different situations. The Golden Compass MAY have made 372M globally- BUT only 70M of that was from the USA and Canada. It only made 70M domestically in two whole months.

VDT has already made 90M and counting. So it has made at least 20 more million dollars domestically in less than a month.

The Golden Compass made only around 40% profit domestically and thus it is an official box office bomb. Had it made over 55% but not quite 60%, I think the studio may have considered giving a sequel a chance. But 40% is way too low.

On the other hand, VDT will no doubt hit 93M this weekend. 93M is what VDT needs to be at 60%. If a movie makes at least 60% profit domestically, it cannot be considered a flop. VDT is still running. It is likely to make at least 100M, which would be close to 65% profit.

Finally, GC had a much higher budget while not making as big a profit in proportion and in net dollars. VDT is being much more successful in net dollars and in proportional profit.

In conclusion, the numbers for VDT look much better than those of GC. So it is highly likelier that VDT's numbers will be good enough to guarantee the greenlighting of SC.

In the meantime, go watch VDT again!
