Whether than just sitting back and waiting, it makes good conversation to talk about it and make our own guesses on what will be the future of the series based on the numbers we've seen.
I don't think we should all convince ourselves, after our detailed analysis, that VDT must be doing well enough to justify a green light for SC, and then be devastated when the green light never comes.
Of course
Gotta always keep that in mind, which is why I didn't say it would be greenlit, I just said "the future of Narnia". I would love for it to continue, and I am hopeful for it, but I am keeping all in mind nonetheless.

Are you trying to crush me??? Can't we stick with nice words like if????
Welcome to NarniaWeb, GrizzledFish.
Nobody will know whether there will be a sequel until an official announcement is made.
I believe most people here are aware of that fact.
One thing people really need to do is to stop with the blind speculation. I've seen this over and over again among fans discussing franchises and whether or not there will be sequels. Calm yourselves, because this kind of thing is unknowable!
I don't necessarily agree that all the speculation is blind. We know what the numbers were for Prince Caspian and that VDT's budget was considerably lower. So logically, the closer VDT comes to PC's box office the better are the chances of another Narnia film.
We don't know all the factors, including the rental agreements with the theaters. Neither do we know about income from future broadcast rights nor home video rentals or sales to come. But speculation is certainly allowed here on NarniaWeb about what the numbers might be.
You just have to let time take its course.
That we most certainly will. But in the meantime, people here can discuss the numbers and give their opinions concerning them; until of course that official decision has been made by official people.

There is definitely no "a" in definite.
The Mind earns by doing; the Heart earns by trying.
Previous posts have been noted. Meanwhile, the current domestic total on Box Office Mojo as of Jan 2nd is: $86,926,397 ( 29.3% )
The foreign total has been updated (Jan 2nd) to $210,235,758 ( 70.7%)
That makes a Worldwide total so far (Jan 2nd) equal to $297,162,155
In the next day or two it is highly likely we will see a total of $90,000,000 at least for domestic (USA) earnings and therefore a minimum of $300,000,000 Worldwide earnings.
Looking at the categories in which VDT appears I am struck by how many similar movies didn't do all that well. Especially the Christian ones. Apart from Passion of the Christ, and its two Narnia predecessors, VDT is doing much better than the run of Christian movies.
I am also wondering how long movies stay around generally in the USA. In Australian in the main theatre chains it is just about six weeks. But then I was looking at the results for Legend of the guardians: the Owls of Ga'hoole. This is a $80,000,000 film which has been out since 24th September, hasn't earned as much as VDT, and yet is still current, it would seem. This is a movie I would have liked to have seen, but missed it when it was on, having not then read the book. Do movies go forever in the USA?
I don't see how it could possibly still be in theaters. The DVD has been out for several weeks now.
Thanks for the welcomes.

yeah, second run theaters. Playing near my house- or it was a week ago. I've known movies to be in theaters several weeks after DVD release. It's not unusual actually.
In Australia, movies are out of cinemas long before they come to DVD. There are the exceptions of course. Titanic for one (but that one was in cinemas for 16 months!)

Doctor Who - Season 11
Monday's gross for Narnia: $1,090,799, that's just about the same amount that The Golden Compass did on its 25th day. It was good for 8th place for the day. Ahead of it were:
TRUE GRIT
LITTLE FOCKERS
TRON LEGACY
BLACK SWAN
THE FIGHTER
YOGI BEAR
TANGLED
Was wondering, Japan doesn't get their premiere until the end of February. How much more is expected worldwide once it opens there? And why are they put last premiere-wise?

LWW made 57m in Japan, and Prince Caspian made 27m, so there is a sizeable amount of revenue available there. Assuming Japan experiences a slight drop-off from Prince Caspian as other countries have, you might expect something around the 20m mark for VDT. Just a guess though.
Brazil- VDT has passed PC and LWW's final gross in this market.
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru & Philippines- VDT has passed PC's final gross. However LWW's final gross is not listed in BOM for these countries.
France- I just wanted to point out that VDT is just $5M shy of reaching PC's final gross.
Lebanon- VDT has passed up PC, but still trails LWW.

Hmm. VDT's drop on Monday was 61%. That's a lot better than Eragon, which dropped 77.6%, but that's also a lot worse than Golden Compass, which dropped 30.3%. And then LWW somehow only dropped 2.6%.

About LWW. New Year's Day 2005 landed on a Sunday, which means many companies were closed on Monday. Remember, if the holiday lands on a Saturday many jobs will give their employees the Friday before off. If it lands on a Sunday they will give the following Monday off. That, I am sure, was the case with LWW.
EDIT:
Not that it matters anymore I think. But I just checked. Narnia didn't lose 500 theaters last weekend like was assumed it would. It only lost 402 according to BOM.
Whereas here I think we get the following Monday off whether New Year's Day falls on Sunday or Saturday. It is also still school holidays here until Australia Day. I presume that school resumed on Monday as well, in USA? Or is it not until next Monday?
