My only wish is that movie earns enough money to make sure that they will make next one (SC or MN) so that books get more promoted, and that kids of this modern time, surrounded with load of negative stuffs, hear about Narnia for the sake of their childhood, and not only childhood.

Well said, The Son of Narnia. That is why I want to see this movie do well and to see more movies like it. We tend to complain that this movie was not like the book, but at the very least it was a clean movie, and you don't see too many of those nowadays.

Thankfully, Silver Chair has some of that snow imagery you were talking about.

So to be clear, what is our definition of success here? Are we thinking over double the investment? That would be over $310 million. This means that currently Dawn Treader has made about 74% of its goal in its first three weekends (four if you count the early release in Australia). We still have quite a ways to go. I'm interested to see how much we make over New Years.

When we are discussing Box Office, of course it is the run in cinemas that is being referred to. But does long run success also include the DVD releases afterwards? Not to mention flight programs on airlines?

Just asking. 8-}

When PC was released in DVD it practically walked out of the door, especially when it was released close to Christmas 2008. To my knowledge it has been a successful library or video shop addition as well.

And let's hope it doesn't go the way of the Polar Bear Express. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... xpress.htm

FYI, "Bear" is not part of that title. It is simply The Polar Express :p

and you mean what? Have a similar box office run for the week leading up to New Year's Day? (Including the weekend). If that's what you mean then that's hardly a good comparison as TPE released just under the second week of November and is a Christmas movie, whereas VDT is a "just" family movie and opened just over a week into December.

Let's just say I am very pleased that VDT did better yesterday than on the previous Monday. If it does well this week, we should reach the 50% mark very soon. And the 60% mark in a reasonable amount of time. And thus it should NOT be considered a flop.

Depends on who you ask. haha

But I'd say it is doing well, all things considered. It will almost certainly make 100 million in the US, and it is doing very well overseas.

Oh, right, I don't know why I put "bear" in there.

The main comparison is that it is a family film that has Christmas fall on Saturday. I noticed that movie just kept dropping after Christmas all through the next few weeks. To look at it positively, no matter how poorly VDT does, it will be better than The Polar Express. :) Now that's some positive thinking right there.

As mentioned above, according to Box Office Mojo, VDT earned $3.49 million at US theaters on Monday December 27:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=narnia3.htm

If that pace holds through the rest of this week, VDT should have ~$75 million in the US by Friday.

Oh, and Tarquin? I'd be wary of citing people on other message forums as experts on, well, anything. Look around this forum -temper tantrums over box office results? Someone predicting God is going to swoop in and make VDT a hit? Immaturity or hyperbole--either way, its not very, shall we say, scientific. Actual professionals, not the arm chair variety, think the weather might have depressed box office results less than 10%.

VDT has been out for a few weeks now in the US and UK, and it hasn't been snowing everywhere for that entire time but the gross is well below LWW and PC. Snow was not a factor in Australia, where VDT also underwhelmed. In my area of the Midwest, there were five inches of snow on the ground (and more piling up) when LWW premiered - and the theater was sold out. Same theater at midnight for VDT, with no snow? Less than a third full.

The takeaway message to all of this: Look to something other than the weather for why VDT is trailing the other Narnia films. On a list of ten factors as to why the film is underperforming, weather belongs at #10. At the same time, be glad VDT is holding well over the holiday break in the US, is doing well internationally, and has yet to open in Japan, a major market.

OK, so where do I start. First, the main discussion was over Sundays drop and Sunday being effected by snow storms domestically. I never blames its whole box office run on the weather. I never said that Voyage was trailing the other films gross simply because of weather. However I do believe that it effected some of there numbers to a degree in Europe, though not to an extreme and not all over Europe. However, domestically I was not referring to snow effecting it's run.I never cited Box Office Mojo posters as experts. Rather, I merely mentioned them because many of them have no Axe to grind, or actually dislike Narnia. Therefore there opinion on the boxoffice drops won't be tainted by sentimentality like it might be here. Also I don't think 5 inches compares to a blizzard. Just because it's snowing doesn't mean it's considered a blizzard. People will go out in the snow. However, when it gets to the point of being unable to travel like it was here in New York then they are not going to the movies. You are going on you own personal experience 5 years ago. In the mid west. Also, New York City alone has over 9 million people. The whole east coast is a huge population center. It's really naive to say that SUNDAY numbers were not effected by this kind of storm. When I went to see the LWW it was cold, but there was no snow storm. Since the discussion was about this past SUNDAY, and not VT whole box office run, I respectfully think that you are wrong. However, I do agree that weather is pretty low on the list of things that effected VT overall box office run.

I don't think any of the Narnia movies will ever be more successful than LWW, but I do admit, I was preparing myself for having VDT blow PC's box office numbers out of the water (pun intended)! It's such a shame. I hope VDT's box office doesn't affect te rest of the franchise.

On a different note, do you think the fact that this was a Fox movie and not a Disney movie might have anything to do with VDT's box office?! Just a thought...

I think one of the reasons The Polar Express had a significant drop after Christmas is that, as narnian1 said, it was specifically a Christmas movie. There isn't much interest in seeing Christmas movies after the holiday has passed. VDT shouldn't have that issue

We tend to complain that this movie was not like the book, but at the very least it was a clean movie, and you don't see too many of those nowadays.

I couldnt agree more on this. Its a shame that nowadays you cant be sure that even movies made for families are safe from some unpleasant scenes. I must say I was little naive waiting for the scene when lamb becomes lion, but the most important thing is that VDT was really positive movie, that you can recommend to anyone.

Thankfully, Silver Chair has some of that snow imagery you were talking about.

Well I believe that the fact that many people connecting Narnia with the snow is the main reason why they put that scene with snow falling around Lucy.

I was very happy to see that movie had better opening even than LWW in Russia ($10.9 million) an South Korea ($5.3 million). These are really good news and I believe that this is what is so good about film industry, it gives chance to spread the word to every corner of the world. So I am quite happy that there will be more little Russians and Koreans reading books :)

VDT had a great Monday! Minuscule 4.1% drop from Sunday, and a whopping 56.6% leap from last Monday. That brings it to 66 million domestically. Waiting (im)patiently for Tuesday's numbers…

Fox vs. Disney can be a pro or con. It is a double-edged sword.

On one hand, Disney is a child and family oriented company with many theme parks famous for doing many children's and family films.

On the other hand, FOX is the owner of a conservative news channel and Disney has some policies that are more liberal.

Personally, I could not care less. Many people may not notice. I honestly do not think it is what is truly important. I am disappointed at Disney for backing out, though.
