I find it impressive that VDT made 2 million more on its third weekend than Eragon made on its second weekend. (Despite the fact that they opened within 1 million of each other)
And bkey is right, Sunday's number was just fine, in fact, compared to other films it was VERY good. Can't wait to see how much it increases on Monday!

I'm not sure what all the fuss about Sunday's numbers is about. VDT only dropped 1.4% on Sunday, which is really good, and one of the lowest drops of any movie this weekend. Saturday is always the biggest movie night of the weekend, and Sunday is generally the lowest. The fact that VDT only made about $50,000 less on Sunday than it did Saturday is a good thing. A lot of movies over performed their predictions. True Grit, Black Swan, The Tourist, Tangled, and VDT all did better than predicted, depending on what predictions you look at.
The fuss about Sunday's numbers is the circumstances. Normally you are right, Sunday is the smallest day of the weekend, but it should have been the largest this time given the way the calendar lines up this year.
Historically, films have always had a small December 24th, a large increase on December 25th, and then another large increase on December 26th. VDT did have one of the lowest drops, true, but it shouldn't have dropped at all.
The foreign totals are updated so World Wide VDT surpassed 200 mil $!!!
"The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." -John Muir
"Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down
....For an unexplainable reason most movies dropped about 15-20% more than they should have. Also, it is a fact that a large portion of the US population is on the east coast (where a lot of the snow fell). People in those areas did NOT go to the movies. Period. Exclamation Mark!
I think overall it's just also the domestic economy, not only weather.

Right, the economy is probably playing a role in its overall box office run, but I think the weather is the best explanation for why movies disappointed on Sunday in particular.

Unless these numbers go up, it's probably over. The Narnia franchise is most likely finished, even if it has strong legs in its run, because the studios judge films by their opening weekend.
And the franchise had such a promising start too...
THE END IS NIGH! AFTER 5 YEARS, THE NARNIA FRANCHISE HAS GONE FROM ONE OF GREAT SUCCESS, HOPE AND PROMISE TO A CRUMBLING, UGLY BOX OFFICE BOMB!
The only hope for this film is good word-of-mouth and seeing that people are divided about the film (can't blame them), it's a false hope. Well, here's to hoping that a director will one day come along and revitalize the franchise.
Well, I woke up this morning and was hoping so desperately that i dreamt it all. I was wrong, however, and have to face the fact that we have seen the last Narnia movie for a long time. With very good legs, Fox may pull even or make a small profit. However, it will not be what they wanted and they will not make another. I'm super bummed.
I guess narnia is dead then *sigh*
Well, here were some quotes from the first couple of days. It seems that some people have gotten a little more positive over time.

Thanks for the trip down the memory lane, FoN. xD Yeah, I was super bummed the first night...I hadn't yet thought through the whole possibilites of winter legs. I had just assumed that if VDT was making less than half of what PC made it's opening weekend, that it would just fizzle. Fortunately it hasn't.
I blame lack of sleep for my lack of composure in those posts, though. I waited until 1 in the morning for those numbers, only to be virtually slapped in the face.
Yes there is a major weather anomaly. It is called La Niña. Apparently there is also an Indian Ocean anomaly acting in collusion this time, part of the reason for the devastating Pakistan floods. The last such La Niña weather event here of this magnitude hasn't happened since 1988 to 1992 to my knowledge. There was a brief incident in 1998 which filled the dams nicely in time for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. But subsequently we have had something like ten years of drought conditions, with major water supplies dipping as low as 40% or even worse. Though we had good rains last year, this situation has only been really redressed in the last month or so.
This year has been overcast, cold and wet. There has been snow in Victoria and Tasmania, even though it is now Midsummer here Down Under. There have been floods in inland New South Wales, around Wagga Wagga, where the Murrumbidgee broke its banks. There are currently floods in inland Southern Queensland, south of Rockhampton, through which the Tropic of Capricorn passes. I am not surprised that there are severe snowfalls in both USA and in UK. And unfortunately, as a parent myself, I would not be taking school aged children anywhere in such weather, however much I wanted to see the movie.
I had an interesting day today. Normally the whole nation shuts down on Christmas Day except for essential services. That does not include Cinemas as most people have TV's. Boxing Day is the big day for films but when I went to the local movies today, designated the Boxing Day Public Holiday, the place was packed. Funnily enough, the queues for VDT were just as long as for Gulliver's Travels, which the counter staff claimed was almost sold out. And when I was in the theatre, it had much more people in it than my excursion to Harry Potter the weekend before Christmas. They were families with small, medium and large children with them. And they enjoyed the movie immensely, laughing at all of Eustace's jokes and staying spellbound when Pauline Baynes' illustrations came up in the credits.
You could have heard a pin drop when the travellers reached Aslan's table. This was Australian bush scenery at its most creepy and magical, and it shows. I felt a real stiffening of interest and tension at that point, and I wondered how many of the adult audience were fondly revisiting such sites in their memories and imaginations.
For once I had to sit where there was a vacancy, there were people in front of me, and latecomers had to sit in the front seats. I'd say that the cinema was full about 75% or more. This was the 2.30 pm 3D session, and of course there are no night sessions now for VDT. Nor should there be when the children in the line waiting for the 5:00 pm session of Gulliver's travels were all singing out 'Narnia, Narnia, Narnia' because of the film posters, as I went past after the film.
Apparently there had been a problem with one of the cinemas at the shopping complex I normally attend. The movie showing in the problem cinema was 'Little Fockers'. People were demanding refunds, and I would not be at all surprised if many of these disgruntled theatre goers in the queue had decided to go to see VDT instead.
My dearly beloved went to see Gulliver's Travels which is much promoted here, with Jack Black being interviewed on Today Tonight, well, tonight. As I suspected, this Boxing Day masterpiece only deals with the cutesy Lilliputians, a mere 25% of the entirety of Jonathan Swifts' scathing satire of 18th Century European society. The Australian connection was because of William Dampier whose published journals of his travels inspired Swift to write this work. It surely can't be because of the decidedly un-Australian modern update, or the way it is marketed to schoolkids.
Before I went, I found out on IMDb that so far, VDT has earned something like $231,197,030 dollars worldwide. Tangled ($261,695,323) and Megamind ($251,688.000) have both earned more money, but Tangled won't be released here until Epiphany (Jan 6th). Maybe there could be a sliver of hope that VDT will do as well as PC at any rate.
Werewolf- wow, that is very good news! AU is the other huge English speaking market besides the USA, Canada, and UK (and perhaps India).
International figures look very good.
On Christmas Day, I actually had to sit near the front of the theatre because there were nearly 90 people at the VDT showing around 3:35 PM or so. I later went to see another movie at another theatre complex- and the VDT show of 6:40 had been sold out! Yup, all 96 seats occupied.
Hopefully, attendance will still be good this week. And next.

( If I´m not mistaking, VDT made over 60 million! Check out the site! )
HELP SAVE SILVER CHAIR! WATCH VDT!
No, it didn't do over 60m this past weekend. But the total is still good.
Well Narnia dropped a little bit on Monday, from 3.6 to 3.5 million. (Well $3,485,140 to be exact.)
I'm not really sure why, but LWW did much better on the same Monday. Instead of dropping it went up nearly 68%! VDT was gaining ground, but now it is extremely behind. VDT only made 28% of what LWW made on the same Monday.
Hopefully VDT will be able to catch up somewhat throughout the week.
I was sort of counting on VDT keeping up a little better this week. At this point I'd say 110 million total is the best we can hope for.

FriendofNarnia2,
It make sense to see LWW increase on a Monday after xmas cause xmas was on a Sunday back in 05.

But based on that then why didn't VDT go up 67% on Sunday since Christmas was on Saturday. Even if we compared VDT's Monday number to LWW's Tuesday number, LWW's number is over 3 times as much. There's has been that big of a percentage gap between their numbers since opening weekend.eekend.
