It is fantastic news per se- kids are out of school, so more families are going to watch the Narnia movie.
Hopefully studios will realize that with the weather, releases need to be kept longer in theatres.
Well, in the international market, I have been keeping track of the countries, here (and will continue to do so until the end of its run):

VDT has, according to BOM, officially passed PC's final gross in three markets:
Bolivia, Malaysia, and Singapore. (highlighted in red). I have several highlighted in blue, in those VDT is close to PC's final gross; South Africa is the next place to beat, and Colombia and Hong Kong.
These of course are small territories, but it's still nice to know
Thanks for keeping up with the international market narnian1!

Wow, fantastic work narnian1! That post must look like an absolute jungle in raw BBCode.
Good to see that VDT is doing well, as long as it equals PC's overseas total I think that would be sufficient for SC. If PC only broke even, VDT should be able to generate profit if it makes the same amount due to a smaller budget and smaller marketing campaign as well, I'm guessing.

I hope so. VDT needs some staying power. On another board I frequent a person said they were going to catch up on the movies they missed during the holidays.

Regarding VDT's staying power, my sister has been doing a lot of ringing around to various cinemas trying to find out somewhere where we could watch it as it doesn't seem very hopeful for our local town. There are some encouraging details from all her searching even though they aren't particularly helpful to us! It seems that many of the big country cinemas haven't even opened with the film yet. In particular there is a pretty big cinema in Wangarrata which is scheduled to screen VOT for the first two weeks of January and then beyond - depending on how successful it is in those two weeks. The Reading Cinema in Dubbo has had the film screening for two weeks already and is scheduled to have it run well into the New Year - I'm guessing it can't be doing to badly or they are fairly convinced it will do well over Christmas/New Year.
I know we are here talking about little cinemas and not the major city ones but it seems that some of the biggest little cinemas haven't opened yet so possibly there is hope yet that Australia can put in a more decent total. Here's hoping anyway!!!!!!!
Do you love "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes?
If so you might like to see my sister's dramatization of this poem through her photography!

VDT has, according to BOM, officially passed PC's final gross in three markets:
Bolivia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
I didn't realize until now, in Malaysia VDT is the highest grossing Narnia movie, (PC also did more than LWW- so word has been consistently better with each movie in that country). Bolivia and Singapore's grosses for LWW are unavailable through BOM so I can't follow up on those two.
Malaysia:
LWW- $1,940,000
PC- $2,750,052
VDT- $3,428,259
On Tuesday Narnia made $2,660,104! If I'm not mistaken that is nearly a 20% jump!

I told you all there was still hope.

Wow, FriendofNarnia2, you beat me in reporting the number by mere seconds.
-starts typing up comparisons-
I'll leave the analyzing to you M4A! You seem to enjoy it, and you are quite good at it!
I do want to mention one interesting calculation I made.
At this point in its run LWW had made 2.5 more than what VDT has made at this point. So I figured out how much LWW made from this point to the end of its run and then divided that number by 2.5, and added that to the total that VDT currently has. The number came out to be 115 million.
So basically, if VDT was able to keep the same ratio between it and LWW from now until the end of its run it would make 115 million domestically. Not too bad for a sequel with such a poor start.

Thanks, I do enjoy it.
VDT made $2,660,104 on Tuesday.
This is a 19.5% increase from Monday. That is a 54.0% increase from last Tuesday. I'll refer to that as 19.5/54.0, and the format will be the same for the rest of this post.
Eragon had a 31.8/77.3 increase. However, that's not really a fair comparison, because that day was the day after Christmas. One thing I just noticed is that VDT will have the Christmas day boost on the weekend. FriendofNarnia, do you know if this a good thing or a bad thing? (Does a major boost on the weekend when people go to the cinemas more anyway have as big of an effect than a major boost on the weekdays?)
Golden Compass is a comparison fail. VDT overwhelmingly trumps 3.9/-46.8 is laughable compared to the rest of these numbers. However, GC's Tuesday was not on the same week as Christmas, so some schools might have not gotten out yet, and holiday legs might not have kicked in. So that might not be a good comparison either.
Prince Caspian, of course, was released in the summer, but just to show how bad it was doing compared to VDT, here's the numbers: -74.7/-44.6. The numbers aren't really fair for comparing, because the day before Tuesday was part of Memorial Day weekend (big boost, so there would be an inevitable fall), and PC also had to deal with the box office powerhouse Indiana Jones 4. But this just shows that VDT's box office has been way more fun to follow than PC's ever was. PC's box office run had almost no bright spots. VDT, despite the horrible opening weekend, already has some.
Now the big comparison, LWW! LWW's increase was just 5.6/22.1, much smaller than VDT's! LWW is the closest to VDT in terms of being able to compare, due to similar drops previously and a difference in distance from Christmas of only 1 day. I'm not sure if because Christmas was on the following Sunday for LWW, that some schools would not be out yet. (VDT had the advantage that Friday was Christmas Eve, and I don't think any school would want to be open on Christmas eve.)
But still, even if it's not a 100% fair comparison, the bottom line is that VDT is doing better than all of these films except for Eragon, which had the Christmas boost.
So, in summary, yeah. That was a good number for Tuesday.

I've heard it is not a good thing, but I'd have to do some personal investigations to know for sure.
And yes, I remember following the Prince Caspian box office run, and boy was it depressing. Even though it will end up making more than VDT, this film is so much more fun to follow! PC basically opened with a mediocre amount, and then plummeted.

That's what I was thinking, too. I looked at both Eragon and LWW. Eragon reaped incredible benefits from Christmas be on Monday, but it had such a poor start it seems to have not really given it the oomph to be a success. LWW had Christmas on a Sunday, however it seems to have benefited just as much. Golden Compass had Christmas on a Tuesday, and it got much softer bumps in week-to-week comparisons of weekdays, but it's bumps were just soft in general so I don't know if that's a good comparison. I'd have to calculate the ratio of it's bumps relative to all it's other bumps, and then do that again for LWW and Eragon, which I don't really feel like doing.
I hope everything I'm saying makes the slightest amount of sense.

Yeah, that was the difference between LWW and PC. LWW had the holiday boost to keep it from dropping like a rock, and PC didn't. Makes me wonder what could have been if PC had been released during the wintertime. (But then again, PC is anything but a wintery movie. They found a way to make VDT's advertising all snowy without looking too ridiculous, but I don't see how they could have possibly done that with PC.)
Makes sense to me.
And I don't blame you for not wanting to go through all those comparisons and calculations, but it would be interesting to find out the result.
