[Closed] Official Box Office Numbers

Box Office Mojo put up an article about international #s, Potter being on top again. And this was said:

This likely was Potter's last weekend on top, as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader opens in 59 markets (including 11 of the top 16) this weekend.

Though I don't like the negative sound of "likely" I like that with their usual negativity toward this series, they at least acknowledge its potential overseas. Can't wait to see how well it does this weekend.

So I really hate posting this. I'm probably going to stop looking up the boxoffice receipts from now on. I want to just enjoy the movie without getting depressed. It was reported that we wouldn't get the Australian numbers until after this weekend. However, someone posted some on the worldofkj site. I put a link to that thread below. If that person is correct, and i am wondering where they got there numbers from, then this is a real disaster for Narnia. I'm thinking we should realize that overseas this movie is not going to do well. It could be the stronger Christian themes. I'm not sure. It's doing really bad, though. Even if it gets Prince Caspian numbers in the end I don't think Fox will make another one. It has inflation and 3D going for it. That means that even with a few less admissions then Prince Caspian it should make more money. So if it grosses the same, then that means it's box office draw has dropped drastically. I hate to be a downer, but this news depressed me.

Well, it would explain why Fox didn't release the numbers... I figured if it did well, Fox would be parading the numbers around. Fox is going to be the laughing stock at Disney...

Possibly. However, Fox will still make a handsome profit off this film. They may not make another one, but if it gets Caspian numbers they will make a profit. We as the fans will just be the ones who suffer. It won't be enough to justify a 4th movie, but will still be a financial success.

If those numbers are correct.... ouch.

By the way, what does SC stand for there? Does it means screens?

If it makes Caspian numbers, as you said it will have made a profit. Fox would keep going, since VDT cost less to make. Why the negative spin on everything you say? :(
With inflation and 3D, even here in the US most predict it will open around $10m under what PC did, which is $10m under LWW itself. I believe this will be a case of legs rather than opening- hence it's December opening.

yeah, screen count I expect. :)

Those Australian numbers are disappointing, to say the least. Why on earth is it showing on fewer screens than a movie that has been out a few weeks (HP)?

This is off topic, but ... fantasia_kitty, how does recent traffic to NarniaWeb.com compare to the run-up to LWW and PC? I recall you saying that for PC, it was lower than before LWW was released.

I noticed that you couldn't buy advance tickets until practically the day beforehand. Unlike the other movies. Hoyts online didn't change their webpage until the actual day of the release.

And it makes a difference that both LWW and PC were associated with long-weekend releases, especially LWW, which was released on Boxing Day. I only hope LWW stays around to Boxing Day so that people have time to go to see it.

waggawerewolf27, Yes, tickets in my area only came out 2 days before the movie. :(

I can't wait until this weekend is over so we can see how it did here in North America.

Are the LWW and PC numbers for all together or just for their opening weekend?

Well I don't know about Narniaweb but traffic on the IMDb DT forum is WAAAAY down considerably from LWW. Here it is the day before the movie comes out and there are only a post or two ever few hours. I know for a fact that the LWW board was A LOT more active. Heck it was about a week or two before the movie came out and everyone who had been hanging around there for months decided to drop off because it wasn't just chat between regular board members, there were post coming up all the time from new people and trolls and so it was hard to keep up.

I can't speak for PC, I wasn't too interested in that one so I never visited that board really in the weeks before it's release.

We're nowhere near the traffic that we had for LWW. The week leading up to the movie's release we had about 22,000 visits to the site per day. However, we're pretty close to PC's numbers. PC had about 13,000 per day and right now we're getting about 12,000 per day.

But having said that, there are two reasons that you can't really compare VDT to the other movies. First of all, when NarniaWeb moved, we lost a lot of traffic that according to Tirian we've never regained. Second of all, Facebook. ;)) NarniaFans' facebook page that was endorsed by Fox has over 1,000,000 fans. And even our facebook page has over 5,000. For the casual news reader, why bother visiting the fansites when you can just get the news headlines via Facebook? So our site traffic isn't a very good judge as to how much interest there is in this movie.

I hope they are off and the movie makes more but that really makes me worried again like i was yesterday. *sigh* I hope they make the remaining ones regardless of how they do.

Yeah, I really think they could get away making The Silver Chair with a 80-100 million dollar budget. There's a lot less FX in that film.

Perhaps the smaller the budget, the more faithful they will be to the source material? Who knows! Maybe smaller box office earnings would end up giving us a better movie next time! Sometimes things that can seem bad at the time end up working out for the better. :)
