I'm really worried that Tron will cut into Narnia's box office numbers.
I know this is mean but I'm almost hoping it is a really bad movie so VDT will make enough for SC to be made.

I really want The Silver Chair to be made. But, let's be honest, VDT is not the signal for another movie. I think a retreat is needed to re-evaluate what the Narnia franchise means in modern times. Michael Apted has pretty clearly stated that he finds the books flawed and believes they need to be changed for the screen. I believe in adaptations. I do not believe in aptedations; that is, directors changing the material to reflect their own image. VDT proved all my worst nightmares about the Narnia movies had come true, like the dark island. So at this point, I feel that the filmmakers should withdraw and ask themselves what kind of films they are trying to make and whether they are making these films out of love for Narnia or out of love for a franchise that can make them money. A well produced movie with special effects does not a good film equal, as Yoda might say.

I saw a bad review for Tron, don't know if it will really cut into the numbers.

Well, currently Tron is at 53% on rottentomatoes. That is about where Narnia was at a day before it was released.

And just a little bit of positive news for y'all.

Narnia did quite well in Australia this past weekend. Holding better its second weekend than both LWW and PC did. Despite opening much lower than PC, it is still possible that with the Christmas boost it could end up doing just as well.

Let's help something similar happens in the USA this weekend.

Thanks, FriendofNarnia2, for that news about VDT's staying/holding power in Australia. That will be the key for the USA for sure. This second weekend and week here will give an indication of the word of mouth if VDT holds better than average. B-)

Almost all the people I have talked to at work or church or friends say they will see it during the holidays. I hope that is the case for a lot more people.

We'll know soon enough... :-ss

I wanted to thank everyone who's been keeping us updated with box office news and facts. I've been following it all closely here, and I would have almost no idea what is going on with VDT if it wasn't for you. :)

See Transformers 2 for example of the movie Yoda was talking about ;-). The point is that they do help, but should not be considered the meat.

I actually havent heard many people talk about Tron. Yet several people, most of whom I havent heard talk of Narnia, are talking about seeing Narnia Friday or Saturday.

Tron will probably open around 50 million, then drop the following week.

Yeah, same here Josh. I've literally heard no one talk about Tron in the last couple of months. In the boxofficemojo derby I predicted Tron would make 47 million, but that is only because many will be paying the 3D premium to see it, and it will also be playing in IMAX theaters, which are more expensive than your average theater.

I'd say VDT's best case scenario is a $15 million weekend.

I don't know. The sci-fi geeks and young boys (4-14) will probably all see Tron.

But I really havent heard any high schooler talk about Tron. The teenagers are more interested in The Tourist, The Fighter, Love and Other Drugs, and the upcoming True Grit movie. At least thats from all of the school conversations I've heard. So despite Disney's intentions, I don't htink Tron: Legacy will necessarily sweep away the teen crowd.

I hear some teenage girls as well as some families talk about seeing Narnia. I'd say best case scenario is 20 million, worst case senario 5 million.

There's absolutely no way it could only make 5 million. That would me it would have nearly an 80% drop. I don't think any movie has EVER dropped that much. I'd say worst case scenario would be somewhere around 10 million.

I suppose technically 20 million is possible, but very, unlikely. That would mean we would be in store for a mini-Avatar run. Like I said 15 million is a good realistic goal, but hey, if it can do better than that I say go for it! :)
