Then, all they have to do is hope for a good advertising campaign.
Emphasis on good advertising campaign! VDT and PC were both partially doomed because of their lack of that aspect. Take notes Fox! Too much violent darkness is bad, so is too much fluffy magic. You have to balance it out! And release more merchandise!
"The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." -John Muir
"Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down
Where are reports that fox and walden spent 100mil on marketing coming from? Disney spent 120 mil on LWW... and they advertised the crap out of that film. Marketing for DT was virtually non existent. I either think this report about spending 100 mil is bogus (no ones been able to back it up yet with facts), or I wanna know where this money actually went cause it certainly wasn't in getting the word out. My friends sister didn't even know they made a third one till it was in theatres.
Also... darkness should have no effect. Right now, dark is in. And harry potter was plenty dark and still made mountains.
IMO, I don't think anyone is really interested in this series. Aside from narnia fans, I don't know anyone who is actually excited for the next. The movies all have felt like they're trying to ride the coattails of more successful films (HP, LOTR, etc) even though the books are nothing like those. I was really disappointed with the first, LWW and if I wasn't a narnia fan, I would have never bothered with 2 and 3. I really don't care about the rest of the series either just because I think these could be made so much better if they stopped trying to make HP/LOTR lite. Too violent for kids, too kiddie for older people. They have no demographic they are aiming for. Just hoping fans of the books turn out and obviously, fans are not enough.
Have you seen Voyage yet? I actually thought this one didn't try to be HP,LOTR, or any of those other movies. Also I'm annoyed by this criticism. All fantasy is going to be similar in some ways. Dragons, sea serpents, witches, spells, battles, Dwarfs etc. Actually I think the first movie wasn't even close to Lord of the Rings. Prince Caspian could be criticized for trying to do that, but not TLTWATW.
Coming in here on a slight side-note, icarus was wondering if we were going to do a box office summary page like we did for PC and I would love to do one... but those of us who normally write for the site are currently just buried under real-life stuff. So I thought, would anyone here be interested? All I'd need is someone to write up a summary paragraph a week, send it to me and I'll get it posted.
So I was checking out the fandango five. According to sources Tron is taking about 51% of all the fandango sales. Up till this morning Narnia was second. Now Black Swan has jumped over it and Narnia is 3rd. It doesn't bode well for this weekend. Honestly this weekend has to have a low drop, less then 50%, for this film to reach at least 100 million. I have a feeling that after this weekend, any questions as to Fox/Walden making another movie will be answered. I'm just afraid I won't like the answer.

I'm willing to write something up fantasia_kitty. I find the box office quite fascinating, and LWW was the original reason I started getting interested in it.

To all those worried about the box office numbers...
I know this may sound strange. But just consider. Fox, Walden Media, and word of mouth will do their part getting people to watch Dawn Treader. But it won’t be enough. God will have to intervene – and he will. But not in ways people expect. It would take a miracle, something drastic, international news coverage (US, UK/Europe especially) of some incident to get a worldwide audience for this film – plot, characters, cast. This is what I want and what I’m praying for. In the meantime, expect the box office to be just like the production and plot of Dawn Treader: “all at sea.” First the film will sink. Then God will right the ship and the movie will float. God will demonstrate that he’s in control. And why does all this matter? Because I believe parts of the Dawn Treader plot will be prophetic for the cast. Expect some salvation miracles among them in the coming years. God cares what happens in the entertainment world. Dawn Treader is just one of his spiritual object lessons…
And let's not forget about Glenn Beck endorsing Dawn Treader this week! When it comes to Christian media, he's like Oprah or something!
Well, Wednesday was not the best day for the film. It grossed $1,433,976, which was 17.6% less than Tuesday.
In comparison LWW dropped 12.9% on its first Wednesday.
And since VDT has been following The Golden Compass's box office run pretty closely I thought it was worth mentioning that TGC dropped 13.2% its first Wednesday.
We'll have to see what happens today. LWW went up 3.7% on Thursday and TGC went down 11.4%. Hopefully it will behave more like LWW.
Also, I wonder how much the snowstorms are having an effect at the box office. I know part of it is just the fact that it's Wednesday, but I know last night we had a huge ice storm where I live, and that yesterday pretty much everyone was in the grocery store stocking up for the blizzard. If it was like that other places, that could explain the steep drop.

If it made 110 million in it's opening week (I know it's been out for two weeks, but only in 5 countries or so), is that really so bad? I mean, December films always make more money in the holidays, right? Then there was the blizzard in the US. And I don't know about the rest of the world, but I'm in the middle of my exams, so I can't go see it until next weekend. that could be a contributing factor.
Isn't it possible that it will make about 300 to 400 million? Compared to the other films, that's not amazing, but there was a huge cutback in the budget too, so that would be compromised. Overall, I believe it is a real possibility that we'll see SC get made.
Well, like MinotaurforAslan said, the studios don't make as much money from the oversea markets, so they tend to look at the U.S. box office to determine whether they can afford a sequel. However, if it does well enough overseas they may end up deciding to take the risk.
I personally think there is about a 50% chance that we will see The Silver Chair made into a film in the next 5 years.

I'm confused...do you want God to intervene physically, as in, perform a genuine miracle, one that can't be explained by science?

I thought it was far more powerful when God was having LWW kick butt at the box office from the start.

Wow, following VDT's box office is a real roller coaster ride. Every day, things seem to either turn sharply for the better or for the worse.
(Either that, or the low Wednesday gross is just averaging out the abnormally high Tuesday gross. Maybe more people just decided to go to the theaters on Tuesday than Wednesday this week. I don't know. )
Now there's a possibility. However, once HP comes to an end, The Hobbit will take over until Avatar comes out in 2014
So basically we have
Harry Potter 7 pt.2 - 2011
The Hobbit pt.1 - 2012
The Hobbit pt.2 - 2013
Avatar 2 - 2014

At this point, I would think it's not having too huge an impact to be honest. VDT is performing exactly as it "should" for a movie that opened to what it did, considering kids are still in school.
Wednesday there was ice here as well. It wasn't safe to drive. I think it would help at least a little bit if parts of the US weren't stuck in a deep freeze.
